I listen to it every week since I played the game back in 2013, it's such a beautiful soundtrack in everyway man, the best video game score ever and I'll take that to the grave.
+MarioTGP the youtube/google notification doesn't always work. I've been going like 5 days in a row just to see if I've missed a notification after my real first "quality video" was posted. There was one comment that never got in my notification box and I didn't got many comments. Like you can literally count it on your own hands. So there will always be a little %%% that will sadly not get into the notification box. As it did for me. But because it was in the fist week of my upload and I didn't want to miss one single comment I went to look at the comments every days to make sure every days. He can try, but he gets so many comments a day, I guess because he has more videos. More comments may go in different videos and then it gets hard to follow up like we'd like him to but whatever.
The soundtrack "all gone" seemingly portrays a felling of despair, yet simultaneously conveys a sense of liberating relief. A fitting allegory for man's willingness to endure and survive in spite of arduous circumstances.
During the "Vanishing Grace"/Rooftop part, I had a feeling some massive event was about to proceed after the view of the giraffes. So I put my controller down and just chilled out to the view and the music for about 15-20 mins. It was nice :)
Codsworth I don't think it is debatable. Had he said it is the best I would agree with you, but he stated it is one of the best. That is not to say that nobody doesn't like it. I'm going to use movies as an example of what I mean. The Silence of the Lambs is one of the best movies ever made whether you like it or not, because the director was able to convey exactly what the protagonist was feeling so the audience felt sympathetic with her, in a way that only few movies have accomplished. I think that if an art piece has one aspect about it that is the best, it should be given a spot on the list of best pieces of art. That is my debatable opinion.
The music, the story, the characters, the gameplay, I need it all. I am so ready for TLOU Part II. Also that music when Joel was escaping the hospital with Ellie gave me the feeling of a hopeless struggle, like this was Joel's and Ellie's last stand as the Fireflies were closing in around the two of them.
When I hear those strings I always tear up, no matter how many times I have listened to the music or watched the videos. No other composition has ever made that to me. It's amazing. I really liked your analysis. Thank you!
Gustavo Santaolalla mentions the silence between notes and their importance, which I massively agree with. This notion is critical to understanding Japanese art (and in my opinion their culture and language). The Japanese word is, 'Ma', and I think it very much so applies to The Last Of Us. The wikipedia article does not do it justice, but it does a little to help paint the notion: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ma_(negative_space) "the simultaneous awareness of form and non-form deriving from an intensification of vision." "it is the thing that takes place in the imagination of the human who experiences these elements." It is in these spaces between music, as well as game design, that allow us to imagine and engage with the story and their characters. The Last of Us as a whole is made more powerful because of the superb use of 'Ma'. (When I was learning traditional taiko drumming 'Ma' was actually written down on the notes. Its not just random gun fights and missions its life
seeing joel so shocked after henry killing himself always gets me man, just the combination of the music and joel's face expression makes it feel so sad and shocking
Santaolalla packs so much emotion into his sound, I love it. Perfect for a drive through the back roads with the windows down during a peaceful sunset.
One of the "songs" I could never find was the intense bass that kicks in during the interrogation scene when Joel slams the knife down into the guy's knee. So fucking fitting for that badass moment.
Supposedly that one was "Blackout" or a variation, but I'm not sure. There are lots of moments that aren't in the OST. All Gone (Seasons) only released on Vol. 2 the following year, and "I Know What You Are," which was mostly drums increasing in volume to mimic the sound of heavy rainfall, didn't seem like it was anywhere in the game.
I've born, grown up and still live in the same hood as Santaolalla born and grown up as he was a child. I'm feel so proud as a person and musian of somebody from our comunnity/country has been so much related to this project with this fantastics and so talented humans beings at Naughty Dog and put this insane amounts of pasion in this project (and so TLOU 2). I love this video and the videogame series as well. Greetings and much of love from Argentina, budd!.

20:25, Oh god, that scene never gets old. We the player, as long as Joel, have been so desensitized but nothing can prepare you for the impact of seeing something so traumatic. Half a decade later and that scene still holds up. Well done Naughty D- wait a minute. I forgot that this video was analyzing the effectiveness of minimal music. Point taken.
So happy you made this video, it shined a light on a very endearing part of my life. The melody that plays in the Main Menu of the TLOU is the first tune I ever learnt on the guitar. Thanks!
So many years later and I'm still searching stuff about this game on UA-cam, it's gonna be so hard to make another game like this, from the music, the voice actors, the sfx, the script, the gameplay, everything was so we'll though and amazing. I wich I could experience something like this this for the first time again.
I personally love the songs that play when you encounter enemies, but they don’t know where you are, especially the music that plays in the tunnel in Salt Lake City. I wish they were on the OST.
Before the HMV in Montreal closed, I found the Last of Us soundtrack CD, and have been listening to it in my car ever since. It's just so lovely and enthralling. Thank you for making this thorough analysis of the soundtrack. It really is lovely and well structured.
You know the game in coordination with Gustavo's music is incredible when a half hour analysis showing small clips from the game makes you cry multiple times. Such a great game with amazing music, and your analysis definitely did it justice. I'm glad to see someone else as deeply fascinated by this game's soundtrack as I am, and it was definitely a well spent half hour.
One of my favorites in this game is the music that plays when pushing the car out of bills town. The song just literally feels like it's saying, "you can do this, we're alive, we're almost there, we can do this." And it always hits me hard during the scene, I definitely recommend anyone to check it out
I love this. I've never seen such an in-depth analysis of sound design. You picked the perfect game to analyze as well. Great job, man. It's good to see you again :)
You did an amazing job with this video, and explained very well how the songs help describe and make you feel the situations that are being shown in the game. Right when the word "FALL" comes to screen at 20:30, That one deep bass note always gets me.
I've been trying to find essays on TLOU's music because I was always so disappointed in most analysis of the game(s) for never mentioning the soundtrack at all. To me, every powerful and memorable scene in this game simply does not exist without Santaolalla's tracks - he just strikes every nerve with each composition, and his music can still single handedly bring me to tears when I listen to it alone. I've always been in awe of how his music highlights everything thematically crucial in the narrative of the franchise, and I'm glad you posted this video to showcase a bit of that! Amazing work. Much love to you 💖
ive always wondered why no one was talking about the soundtrack which is one of my favorite thing in the whole world. the music always makes me feel at ease. thank you for making this video, i love it 💘
Love this video! Sound design is often under appreciated and yet is so vital to immersion. I feel like there’s always something missed in videos about the last of us, and that’s the moment that Joel finds Ellie during the winter scene. Not entirely sure which piece of music it was but I’m sure it would’ve made a valuable addition here :)
The last of us is the only game that I've gone back to time and time again mainly for multiplayer and enjoyed almost every match I play. This game is so fun and will never stop being fun. I love everything about this game the story, music, visuals, and multiplayer. I've played for so long on multiplayer none of friends want to be on the opposite team of me. That is if anyone even plays it anymore other than the few people left on the servers....
When I have a bad anxiety riddled day it is this video that I listen to relax when I finally get a breather. It's mostly Chaseface's voice and cadence. Despite saying he's not taught in music, the appreciation and awe of the music is thoroughly conveyed. It's feels very reassuring. If that makes anysense.
I think the theme that really just punches me in the gut every time is All Gone (Seasons). Especially with the example you gave with Sam and Henry's deaths. Breaks my heart every time seeing them both die like that, seeing Joel's surprised and stricken face and then the scene cutting to black.. and then the word FALL appearing. The Last of Us is such a masterpiece.
"He knows that there is no nobility in selfishness". This sentence along with the music made me burst into cries orz Wonderful analysis video, thanks for your work, really.
Moments is TLOU that legit make me tear up no matter how many times I play this game: *Sarah's death *Henry's suicide *Ellie and Joel's cut-scene at the Corral Pines Ranch
I have the soundtrack downloaded on my phone and listen to it in one go a lot of the times. It’s certainly one of the best audio experiences to go listen to. My personal favorite is The Path (A New Beginning), because it ties so well into the ending scene, and has at once both the hopeful feeling following Ellie staying alive, while expressing the bitter feelings of Joel’s lie and the uncertainty of what’s next for the two
Really. I found that everyone seemed to talk about the Soundtrack. People adore Gustavo and his work. He’s an Icon to the game. At e3 when he came on stage and played everyone cheered at his presence and performance.
This is legitimately my most favorite game that I've ever played. I'm not much of a crier when it comes to media, but this video alone almost broke me with the memories it flooded in me of my first playthrough. I watched with goosebumps in its entirety, something else that rarely happens to me. This analysis was fantastic. I really wish I could replay this game again. I wish I could thank Neil Druckmann, Gustavo Santaolalla, Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and everyone else involved with this absolute masterpiece in person. It's weird to say that I love them for contributing to something that will hold a special place in my heart for a very long time, but it feels right. My admiration for all of these talented people goes beyond words. I can't thank them enough. Even though this video is old, it just adds more reason for my appreciation for you putting time into discussing why this soundtrack is entirely unique and perfect. So, thanks.
I'm late to seeing with this video but I have to say I absolutely love the music in this game and this analysis of it is fantastic. For the most part I agree with everything you say, except for the hospital scene with the track All Gone - No Escape. I don't think it represents Joel's selfishness and the lack of nobility in his actions. Personally, I think the reason the song is so mournful is because this one scene shows him fighting against all of the loss he's had to suffer through his life. Most importantly, the loss his daughter. You'll notice he carries her in this scene very similarly to how he carried his daughter during the prologue. A different but very similar rendition of All Gone also plays during my favorite scene of the game, right after Ellie kills David. He loves Ellie like a daughter, and the song represents this love for her, not the guilt of his actions, because I honestly don't think he feels guilty about it. He certainly wouldn't feel guilty if he did it for Sarah.
This is a really great video. I don't think this soundtrack got enough appreciation. I grew up in a music shop and musical scores are the first thing that hit me in media. The first time I played through this game, I stopped 15 minutes in to look up the composer. Though I've never seen the behind the scenes footage. Watching this makes me want to go back and play it again. Great job Chase.
Neil Druckmann said that Gustavo is the kind of guy who does things based on passion, not money, and I so respect that from such a talented individual. The Last of Us would not be the game it is without the fantastic music. So happy that he's doing the last of us part 2!
Just when I was starting to forget about this game and just how much it pulls on my heart strings, you upload this video. Thanks, ChaseFace, I'm gonna go replay this game and bawl my eyes out, for old time's sake
There are many brilliant pieces of music in the last of us. It’s my favourite game ever. I was Ellie’s age when the remastered version was released and I’ve played through the story at least 4/5 times. The best bit for me is the piece ‘home’ at the very end, walking through the woods and seeing jackson and it seems to accurately capture every emotion I’m feeling and I honestly don’t understand how it does it
I have never really noticed the music ever before and this is my favorite game ever. The music is so perfectly crafted and blends amazingly with what is happening on screen, thank you for calling attention to it...
I am so glad someone made this video, I've been waiting for a UA-cam channel to cover this phenomenal soundtrack for years. I've always found the TLOU score so underrated, and always find myself listening to it weekly since the game released; in my opinion, it deserves so much more appreciation as the best video game score of all time. Such a serene, desolate, isolated, beautiful and spacial soundtrack that never fails to get me crying or feeling emotions of desperation or blissful loneliness. One of my favourite musical bodies of work, Gustavo is a genius! Thank you so much for making a video on this, it was perfect and covered the sound design superbly too!
I have had hundreds of hours of just listening to the music from this game. It's chilling, sad, excting, upliftning and just amazing to hear all different kinds of moods and scenarions play out. This game is incredible and the music fits so well that I wonder if I will ever hear soundtracks as good as theese ones again. Great job with the analysis and video!
I listen to the soundtrack all the time. What an amazing experience this game is. I can't wait to play through it again for the 5th time before Part 2.
I really like how you make a deeper analysis around the sound, the music and how is more complex than it looks. This is the complement of the game some reviewers missed cause they do not have the experience with the sound design. Absolutely awesome, congrats.
Chase, you rock. Always found the music breakdowns on games to be the highlights of your previous, more general analyses. Super-excited to see where this series goes, I'd never even heard tell that such a characteristic stance on music's role had been associated with this game before. I remember when I picked up the soundtrack to Nuclear Throne, about a month before I got to actually play the game, that it made me think of Last of Us but I couldn't place my finger on what about LoU differed since I'm not the most savvy on analyzing compositional design in audio. Thanks for wrapping that up handily for me with the spliced-in quotes from the composer. :)
Man, it so touch! Thank you! So many time passed, but this scenes, they are so touchy... They squeeze tears from my eyes. And music is really so important there. Thank you, man!
Wow, this is my favorite game in 20 years of gaming, and I knew the soundtrack was fantastic, but I had no idea how intimately involved the composer was. Thanks for making this video. Fantastic.
This is a beautiful analysis of a beautiful game. Sincerely, thank you for your time and effort to make something to entertain others. Game design is so interesting and for someone to gush about a game in as sophisticated a way as they can is heartwarming. Thank you.
You forgot to notice how the ending with him carrying ellie in his arms directly reflects the very beginning when he was running from infected with Sarah in his arms, the shadows of those chasing seen thru light shining at your back and flashing sirens
This is an amazing video. I never really noticed how perfect the sound design is for this game. Even though I'm a graphic design student and not a sound designer, the mantra of "good design goes unnoticed" carries on I guess.
Really great video! I love the soundtrack of this game and this documentary really drives home how amazing it is! I know you couldn't spend too much time covering EVERY song, but I would have liked to hear your thoughts on "All Gone (Reunited)", the song that plays when Ellie kills David and...well, reunites with Joel. That's my favorite track as it's just so emotional and Joel essentially becomes Ellie's dad at that point.
The music is amazing for this game. It sets the tone for every scene. Don’t forget, he wrote the score for Deadwood too, that’s where I first heard his work.
Chase, your videos are so just... I dunno! The effort and professionalism that your videos contain is awe-inspiring. While everyone can say they want more regular uploads; I can see why they take so long, you put so much effort and time into these videos and I really really appreciate it. ^~^
this game has made a lasting impact on my life when I played it it made me realize and think about things from different points of view. I cant wait to see what the last of us part 2 has to offer and show us
You're right about how The Last of Us uses silence a lot, to the point that ambient sound just melds naturally when the scene/moment needs to be emphasized, whether it's a heart-pumping scene, a gut wrenching tragedy or a sweet, but melancholic one. I enjoyed Billy's Town/segment a LOT, especially the church area. Another is exploring the empty suburban sprawl with the two brothers, where they reminisce how life was before the infection and other things. I'm also in love with Ellie's hunt during winter. Wow, replaying the game because their sound and music just gets us to ride the desolate landscape of The Last of Us dystopian world.
Gustavo Santaolalla is a Legend! Like... how? How can you be given such a difficult task like this-- to create the music for a big game from nothing-- and do it beyond perfection. The music in this game was nothing but great.
I always felt like the acoustic guitar melodies and all that was something that Joel had played himself and with the revelation that the game was in fact crafted around the soundtrack that kind of makes sense
I forgot how much I adored the soundtrack for The Last of Us
It's one of the many reasons that The Last of Us is my favorite video game.
I won't hold it against you this once ;P

This sentence along with the music made me burst into cries orz
Wonderful analysis video, thanks for your work, really.
I think the title of this video should be called "The Last Of Us - Why People SHOULD talk about the music" because it's just so amazing
Moments is TLOU that legit make me tear up no matter how many times I play this game:
*Sarah's death
*Henry's suicide
*Ellie and Joel's cut-scene at the Corral Pines Ranch
I have the soundtrack downloaded on my phone and listen to it in one go a lot of the times. It’s certainly one of the best audio experiences to go listen to. My personal favorite is The Path (A New Beginning), because it ties so well into the ending scene, and has at once both the hopeful feeling following Ellie staying alive, while expressing the bitter feelings of Joel’s lie and the uncertainty of what’s next for the two
Excellent commentary; thoroughly crafted and very enjoyable to watch. Keep up the great work!
So, thanks.
i can play this game 109 times and still be shocked and amazed
I literally just finished this game again yesterday and this was the best thing to find on my subscriptions list today!! Thank you so much!
I remember listening to the music and thinking about how fantastic it was, thanks for clearing up why it’s so fantastic
I love your video's keep up the good work my man
Just when I was starting to forget about this game and just how much it pulls on my heart strings, you upload this video.
This game is so powerful that even listening and watching out of context snippets of important scenes make me tear up.
I love the way you explain the music and i personally get very into the soundtracks and hearing someone explain the nuances really moved me.
Quarantine Zone is absolutely my favorite track. The creepieness is just to fucking strong
Thank you so much for your analysis. I think it's spot on and brought back those sweet memories playing this game!
Great analysis you really put everything that we felt into tangible substance. My favorite game ever!
What a fantastic video. Thank you. The experience i had with this game will stick with me always, along with it's fantastic music.
I listen to the soundtrack all the time. What an amazing experience this game is. I can't wait to play through it again for the 5th time before Part 2.
Great video, you made me appreciate this game even more somehow
I really like how you make a deeper analysis around the sound, the music and how is more complex than it looks.
This is the complement of the game some reviewers missed cause they do not have the experience with the sound design.
Absolutely awesome, congrats.
The soundtrack in this game truly makes this game one of the best games ever made
This is INCREDIBLE! What an engaging and enthralling video! I LOVE THIS! Also makes me even more excited for TLOU 2's music and story....
This is a very well put together video! Thanks a lot for making it!
Being from Buenos Aires as well, Santaolalla has been one of my many inspirations towards film and video game scoring.
I always loved the music and sound design but holy crap this video made me love and appreciate it even more
The music is amazing for this game. It sets the tone for every scene.
Don’t forget, he wrote the score for Deadwood too, that’s where I first heard his work.
What an amazing game .... Real good in depth video yet again m8 ... Top work
Chase, your videos are so just...
I cant wait to see what the last of us part 2 has to offer and show us
You should be a story teller man, just pure awesomeness listening to this
You're right about how The Last of Us uses silence a lot, to the point that ambient sound just melds naturally when the scene/moment needs to be emphasized, whether it's a heart-pumping scene, a gut wrenching tragedy or a sweet, but melancholic one.
It almost went unnoticed that the music made the game so much more in depth, so much more immersable. I loved the last of us
holy shit this is amazing. this is my favorite score of all time thank you for going so in depth about it
I love your analysis of music in games.
I'm glad you made a video about it.
The choice and all Gone(sessions) are my favorites, perfect use for a bass
I always felt like the acoustic guitar melodies and all that was something that Joel had played himself and with the revelation that the game was in fact crafted around the soundtrack that kind of makes sense
Just always fit his character perfectly
When I'm sad, I listen to the credits theme of The Last of Us. It's magical
Thanks for the analysis on the sound track! I've always loved the music, but you definitely made me think of why. This was a great video. 😊
