@@MegaZeta I haven’t seen that interview and the liberal consensus in 2020 was that the Trump vaccine was going to be dangerous because of how rushed and experimental it was. I would hope that Danny doesn’t have such a short memory, I’ve seen hints that he even remembers what Fauci did in the 80s. If I were Danny, I would either get a medical exemption because of all the diseases I got in Africa (which may have included Guillain-Barré syndrome; I thought he just got hepatitis and malaria a couple of times but he seems to have retconned it recently to have been all kinds of diseases which he didn’t know what they were) or use my millions to buy a fake vaccine card, keep very tight-lipped about the matter, and if the topic comes up and I’m under pressure of course I would denounce antivax idiots to save face. The N1-methylpseudourylated RNA platform ERASES immunity to the coded antigen. This is why people get COVID again multiple times after getting it. Look at Jen Psaki, she just got COVID for the second time. That should be virtually impossible especially if boosted. Sure the symptoms are reduced. But that just means you’re asymptomatically infectious and a danger to be around, like Typhoid Mary. And the whole point of forcing people to get vaccinated to begin with was supposed to be to reduce this danger!

I'm loving this!!! Trent Reznor is my favorite everything and I'm a huge fan of Danny Elfman so this was amazing to hear the collaboration.
I love everything that has come from these two working together so far, I seriously hope for a full album.
I think they would get on each other’s nerves if they spent too much time together. Danny loves chatting with people of diverse opinions. Trent on the other hand blocks them, so... Danny will have to watch what he says around Trent, which is hard for him because he’s so impulsive...

They're not from different eras. Trent has been doing his thing since the mid-80s, which was Danny's heyday. It's just that (as pop musicians, not as composers) Trent was coming up with NIN as Danny was winding down with Oingo Boingo.

Elfman wrote this. He’s a fan of wacky time signatures, the first Boingo album is full of them. I think the lyrics are about Operation Warp Speed... he knew that was trouble coming from a mile away...

@@sharp14x Well it's clearly about a society that is dumbed-down - and that includes even the educated people as implied by "animal eloquence", like trained parrots in contrast with "native intelligence" which is either common sense or high IQ/innate intellectual ability apart from education - and also under lockdown as implied by "I'd like to rejoice/I dream of a choice/to regain a fraction of a life" and this combination of stupidity and desperation impels people to put their trust in a solution that is obviously deadly, like "taking a bath in cyanide". It was written in 2020 when people were worried that Trump was going to rush the vaccines and the vaccines that were chosen to get the lion's share of the Warp Speed funding were all experimental technologies with very little prior use in humans. Danny Elfman is a highly self-educated amateur biologist who has won science awards as a child so I imagine he would be able to deduce a priori as I have that these particular technologies would be dangerous, and yet he predicted that they would not only get approved anyway because of how bad Trump corrupted the FDA but that people would be brainwashed into thinking they were safe. The fact that the man in charge of the show had to ask why you can't inject disinfectant exemplifies this fear which went down the memory hole somehow... some will say it's about Trump telling people to drink hydroxychloroquine but Danny has been to Africa and suffered malaria while he was there so he knows that HCQ is not just a poison used in fish tank cleaner and somehow I doubt he would liken the chemical that saved his life multiple times to the chemical that wiped his last name off the face of Europe. And before you say anything about ivermectin this song was written well before "horse paste" became a meme.

Regardless, I can sort of see these themes in Reznor and Elfman's recent works, but I'm cognisant that lyrics mean different things to different people, and we see what we want to see. The general message of the dystopian shithole we're headed for is certainly there.

Big changes in the meter (time signature) to this composition. Makes me think the lyrics came first because it really emphasizes them. "Here comes the eulogy' -perfectly describes the tempo and gives the impression of a rushed crime taking place. Oh wait, there is a rushed crime taking place.
I think Elfman’s is better though. In this version you get the feeling that Reznor unironically wants to take a bath in cyanide whereas Elfman’s version sounds more sinister at first and then transitions into making “taking a bath in cyanide” sound like a good time. In the demo it was different, it sounded like he didn’t quite know yet what he wanted to do with that part, he made it sound just as sinister as the rest of the chorus at first before making the abrupt transition in the final version.

“Native intelligence” denotes either common sense, or innate intellectual ability/IQ as distinguished from acquired intellectual ability or education. In contrast, “animal eloquence”, I believe, denotes educated idiocy, like a parrot that repeats things without really understanding what they’re saying.
