Yeah, don´t see that either. With how squared it is and the bolt on looking wheel arches on the side it is to me clearly more going for the E30 look. Just not nearly as well executed as the E30 imo. And weighing almost as much as two E30 surely doesn´t help it either... Gimme the 1M any day of the week, in terms of both looks wise and driving experience.
Even a cayman gts is not close to being comparable with the G87 it’s 15k more at least. The Porsche manual is the best as you would expect it to be but it costs a lot more on every angle.
Yeah it's somebody currently looking for a daily 1 series I'm looking for an N55 one made after 2010. Because I really love the 1-series m I know for a fact that has an N54 in it. Of the three that's the one I'd pick.
Despite the lack of a manual option, I’d take an Alpine A110 over all of them. Porsche and BMW have all become too fat, and the long gearing on Cayman’s saps some of the fun too. Lightness has become far too underrated in the sports car segment.
Absolutely agree on the weight comment and i would also agree on the Alpine, as it is everything a BMW M used to be with being RWD and lightweight. It even looks absolutely gorgeous! But with all that it just is the biggest shame ever that Renault dropped the ball so incredible hard by not offering a manual imo... That would´ve been the absolute no-brainer modern day sports-coupe to buy like the GR86 is now...
It would have to be the 1m every time. Might be a good video to do from the 1m along with all the series of base M2’s up to the latest one to see how each fairs against each other
But is "doesn´t look as bad" really the new standard you would want to settle on? I also would agree that the front looks waaaay better than the current M3/4, those boxed vents left and right still look simply out of place to me, they just don´t really fit with anything else of the car. And at the same time the back looks waaaay worse with the weird rearlights if you ask me.
@@Schmitzelhaus no, we shouldn't settle on this, but what I meant by ''doesn't look as bad'' was that it doesn't look nearly as bad as people make it out to be, and I agree with you about the reason why it looks not as good as it could

i have a gt86 and a fiesta st mk8.5. Automatic clutch is better, faster and easier....but nothing can be more connected and enjoyable than a good stick, a good car and good roads....no need also for so much engine power. I had an M3 e46 and for me the gt86 is more fun, more easy to handle and better on the road. every corner can be a little drift and the rain is something that make me smile....because it has the right power for the road
Ugh if gt4 had a proper 2nd gear which ended at around 60mph it would be perfect. Even though it has almost enough torque to lug its way through 2nd it just feels wrong.
Ive got 2 issues from this guy! Pretty sure the 1m is actually a twin turbo n54 engine not twin scroll n55. ...and the fake gear changes in the Porsche doesn't count because nobody is going to shift gears back n fourth consecutively without changing speed as you have illustrated in an over exaggerated fasion in this video. That was a fail. The Porsche is however the drivers car I'm sure though, even though I have a bmw. I can't afford one so that's the other issue lol.
You only have to look at the new M2 and it's a no. But then sit in one, as I have and the issues highlighted in this video are immediately apparent. I could never get comfortable in it and frankly, didn't like the interior layout either. Quality was good though. I currently drive a Cayman 718 GTS and was considering the M2, but nope. No even close to my car in so many ways and anyway, I don't manuals anymore, just can't see the point.
The 1M is definitely on my ultimate dream car list...unfortunately when you have kids and being a musician...Sports cars have never been a viable option...but after a GQ 4.2 Litre Nissan Patrol diesel ....everything feels sporty. Used to have drag races with buses for an adrenaline rush...😂 2010-2012 was the best era for manual vehicles. Working in car sales. I love that era, because screens age vehicles so quickly...
I love the M cars but i agree regarding the size of the interiors/steering wheel. What were they thinking?! Unless you're 6ft 5 with massive hands its just ridiculous, way, WAY too big and chunky.
Silly comparison with the GT4 in terms of price point but I think the outcome would be the same with any of the cayman line up. Even a base cayman has that Porsche DNA and chassis that made it a wonderful drivers car, the extra mid range torque from the turbo in the lesser caymans also helps with the tall gearing
The M2 competes with the Audi RS3Y and the AMG A45S. A comparison of these three would be relevant. A Cayman GT4 is a great second or third car and not an alternative to a compact, very sporty 4 seater.
As of the 14th of August 2023 in South Africa, Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 is priced at R2076000.00 and BMW M2 Coupe at R1503975.00 base prices. I think the two cars are in different market segments.
Don’t get why the M2 is getting compared to the GT4, or even a GTS 4.0. The GT4 is twice the price of an M2, and the GTS 4.0 is about 60% more. If I had the cash I’d def take either of the Porsche’s, but jeez you get a lot of sports car for your money with the M2
1M is soo much better looking than the M2. M2 seems a mismatch of parts, to apologize for losing their way. the 1M seems more a passion project by devoted engineers, (before they left for KIA)
@@deenoc3622 Reviewers are.. reviewers, in best case journalists, not record breaking Les Mans winning Porsche engineers. Porsche ALWAYS calculates the gear ratios for best possible performance. The thing with this engine is that it is high revving. So actually it doesn't have tall gears, it revs high and it performs best there,, like a GT3 so they would only deprive it if they gave it less time in high rpms.

Even a cayman gts is not close to being comparable with the G87 it’s 15k more at least. The Porsche manual is the best as you would expect it to be but it costs a lot more on every angle.
What’s the price difference between the GT4 and M2?
See video @ 13:43. GT4 starts at 82k. M2 starts at 65k.
@@p.patrickcamba2514 thank you sir.
As tested the Porsche is likely 35K more - You could get the M2 and a Ducati and a Vacheron Constantin for the price of the Porsche
The 20-second ad every 6 minutes really adds to the immersion 🤩
Yeah it's somebody currently looking for a daily 1 series I'm looking for an N55 one made after 2010.
Because I really love the 1-series m I know for a fact that has an N54 in it.
Of the three that's the one I'd pick.
Despite the lack of a manual option, I’d take an Alpine A110 over all of them. Porsche and BMW have all become too fat, and the long gearing on Cayman’s saps some of the fun too. Lightness has become far too underrated in the sports car segment.
I have an Alpine a110 as my daily and her driving dynamics are insane
Absolutely agree on the weight comment and i would also agree on the Alpine, as it is everything a BMW M used to be with being RWD and lightweight.
It even looks absolutely gorgeous! But with all that it just is the biggest shame ever that Renault dropped the ball so incredible hard by not offering a manual imo...
That would´ve been the absolute no-brainer modern day sports-coupe to buy like the GR86 is now...
@@Schmitzelhaus i have one and I agree the dual clutch it has is nice but a manual would be awesome
It would have to be the 1m every time. Might be a good video to do from the 1m along with all the series of base M2’s up to the latest one to see how each fairs against each other
Yeah, I still don't why people say the new M2 is bad looking, my own taste has been changing a lot lately, but the front doesn't look as bad.
@@Schmitzelhaus no, we shouldn't settle on this, but what I meant by ''doesn't look as bad'' was that it doesn't look nearly as bad as people make it out to be, and I agree with you about the reason why it looks not as good as it could
I am sure that the manual gearbox in M models will survive longer than the normal dashboard, it seems to me that we are doomed to complicated tablets full of unnecessary information.
You forgot the Lotus Emira in this comparison. BTW I hope the manual transmition stays alive for the M2 CSL
9:00 the 2 series not based on the 4 series becuase the 2 series gran coupe is fed, the f87 was based on the 4 series and the first 1 series was based on the 3 series.
Nothing wrong with what he said. You're thinking of the wrong 1 series; he's talking about the F40, not the 1M's lineage.
Haha N54 is twin turbo charged!! Call yourself an enthusiast!! Oh dear TopGear 🤦♂️🤣🤣
i have a gt86 and a fiesta st mk8.5.
A short ratio diff would be great. 45/65/95/120 etc would transform the car and be so much more fun to drive
Cayman is the best
Most $ also
@@ScHr4nZii yeah
Ive got 2 issues from this guy!
Pretty sure the 1m is actually a twin turbo n54 engine not twin scroll n55.
...and the fake gear changes in the Porsche doesn't count because nobody is going to shift gears back n fourth consecutively without changing speed as you have illustrated in an over exaggerated fasion in this video. That was a fail.
The Porsche is however the drivers car I'm sure though, even though I have a bmw. I can't afford one so that's the other issue lol.
I’d still take the 1M… unless we’re talking about the GT4RS.
No even close to my car in so many ways and anyway, I don't manuals anymore, just can't see the point.
where are these roads in the UK?
The fact that everyone is *still* comparing the 1M to cars 2 and 3 generations newer than it, tells me everything I need to know.
"Kudos to the editor and videographer for this incredible video! The editing is top-notch, and the videography’s is simply stunning.”👏🎬🎥
Previous f-series m2 was also as wide as f-series m4. Dude doesn’t know much about the cars he’s reviewing it seems
That GT4 looks incredible even in that pink!
It's purple.... Not pink
My goodness having the Cayman and the M2 next to each other you just see how gorgeous the Cayman is
14:35. Where is that? Incredible.
The Cayman GT4 is in a higher class than the BMW's. My dream car.
I love the M cars but i agree regarding the size of the interiors/steering wheel. What were they thinking?! Unless you're 6ft 5 with massive hands its just ridiculous, way, WAY too big and chunky.
What countries are the M3 manual being released?
I prefer the old shape m2 not that new 1 ..love the porsche colour and we al love 1m 😊
Thanks for the advise with regards to the seats in combination with the manual, but you are 5ft tall
I know several people who have M2 love it but pay 1200 a month. 😂 that's funny
It's not that I don't like new cars - it's just that I feel much better when I'm driving much older cars .......
The M2 competes with the Audi RS3Y and the AMG A45S. A comparison of these three would be relevant. A Cayman GT4 is a great second or third car and not an alternative to a compact, very sporty 4 seater.
You'd still have the M1 though out of these three. However, I think a Cayman GTS would sway me more than the GT4.
@@Legotechs a new 718 GT4 the same price as a new M2? Really? Where?
Jeremy, Richard, or James would've known the correct turbo config on the 1M
Indeed. Embarrassing.
Where’s Chris Harris?
Perfect! 1M Fan.
Lol yall know I came to the comments when he said that one part.
What a fun comp. You guys get me.
The M2 is missing a body color painted front lip
HAHAHAH... TOP GEAR for yah! '1M Not Twin Turbo' ....lololol
GTS 4.0l Boxster owner here in Aust. Gotta say once you've owned a Porsche you'd never not own one! (previous - 986s (Manual) and 981s (PDK)
I'd vote for the Porsche for best colour, despite being a BMW fan. Pale purple?
1M is soo much better looking than the M2.
M2 seems a mismatch of parts, to apologize for losing their way.
the 1M seems more a passion project by devoted engineers, (before they left for KIA)
20:50 only in the Uk
10:55 Trust me, Porsche knows how to calculate gear ratios better than you.
Its a common complaint by many reviwers. Theres aftermarket services that will shorten the gearing. Its geared for the autobahn, not our roads.
@@C6FeverPorsche didn’t give us optimal gear ratios because of emissions and noise regs, that’s what they “engineered”, not performance.
Who redlines every gear? The Cayman S has plenty of power at lower rpm and and a fairly flat torque curve. Red-lining each gear is stupid.
Without even watching, i would take that 1M any day of the week! Even the licence plate on it is perfection! 😁👌
I always find it “funny” when journalists make bold statements about a brands sales strategy or how the brand respond to specific needs of their customer base. For true bmw fans boys, we get why they do what they do.. so my advice to outsiders, your job is to either enjoy the visit and experience what we do when we drive our cars or go play with the toys you’ve spent your money on 👀
Kinda weird that a car journalist driving the actual car he's talking about (a very famous car btw) doesn't know that the engine has two turbos...and is VERY assertive that he's correct and everybody else is wrong.
That 1M is sick, and the M2 makes me sick.
So sick of everyone replacing dials with stupid screens, is anyone actually saying they want these things?
Is it me or did they edit the video to take out the incorrect reference to the N54 not being twin turbo? If so, kudos to Top Gear for fixing this.
Well, this is easy :
The M2 looks like a train wreck.
The GT4 gearing is a deal breaker.
So, 1M please ! Yummy.
Where is that bridge @14:39?
