Yes, I absolutely agree. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy was her best album. I remember listening to that album late at night in college just letting the songs wash over me. Brings back a lot of memories...
I love her so much. She's a true artist and excellent song writer who works with only the best musicians. Her songs musically are filled with subtle, colorful textures and layers. She's soft yet powerful. Her live show was great also. That song was great but it doesn't begin to showcase her singing ability. she's fantastic. Check out 'A path of thorns' her 1st release i believe. Also 'Fallen', 'World on Fire', 'Stupid', and of course 'Possession'. Great songs. Thanks
This is an incredible album and her best. This song is fantastic, as most of the tracks on this album. A lot of her catalog is incredible and I hope you react to it.
i was a dancer growing up, and i had a lyrical/contemporary dance to this song. it gives me chills to this day, and i catch myself still doing the choreography.
I have been into metal, not party pop metal. I've been a huge fan of Grunge (for lack of a better term). I've been into the blues, even Morrissey, R.E.M., RUSH. Friends are always caught off guard when I listen to Sarah. When this album came out, i was hooked on her beautiful lyrics, the pain, the hope and hopelessness and her longing, yearning. The music is so different also. It evokes an emotion that i find lacking in most music. I write and record. I understand "Wind and time rapes the flower trembling on the vine. Nothing leans to shelter it". Because of that I find it hard to open up completely to be so bluntly and beautifully honest. She has been a mentor and I am thankful for her. Afterglow is another gut wrenching album. Especially Fallen.
I was lucky enough to see her live in 2014 and she performed this song. I had chills throughout the performance. I was blown away that she could still hit the notes (age and all) but wow!
Such a great album. Definitely check out some of the other songs on it. Possession of course, but all of the others too. I played the f*ck out of this back in the 90s
I know this was 2 years ago, but if you’ve never checked out the live version of this from Mirrorball, you’re life hasn’t been changed yet. 😅 Seriously, it’s pretty great.
I've always loved this track. Fumbling ... is a decent album. I love "Path of Thorns" and "I Will Not Forget You" from the previous album too. While Angel has worn a little thin from over-exposure over the years there is some really fine work on the Surfacing album.
You surprised me with this one JP!! As far as I know. You're the first reaction channel that I've seen do a Sarah song. Kudos and thank you. If you do anymore Sarah songs, I'd like to suggest you take them from the "Afterglow" Live concert. She sings with a lot of emotion in her concerts. She delivers to the crowd. Try "Witness", "Stupid" or yes, even "Fear" again. It's a better production. Trust me. :) Good bands, that can deliver better than the studio version when they play live, are hard to come by, or find. She's worth a look again.
@@JustJP I hope you tried Possession which was her break through hit. Angel is a great song lyrically. Those SPCA commercials did the song a disservice.
I absolutely love this album. This isn't one of my favorites off of it though. The title track, Possession, Hold On (or the different mix from the No Alternative collection). She was trained as an opera singer.
YES! Canadian. Her first sing that hit was VOX and the video has her at the water's edge; it really showcases her voice/vox. Building a Mystery is a nice one too. I had a friend that I made a short video with from the states and while at here house that commercial came on and she too also implied she was totally turned off by the artist... and I had to say, well, yah.... this is a sad commercial,.... so I guess that is the second time I've heard this negative association, but she really is a recognized singer/songwriting talent here and in other countries. I'm glad you gave here a listen, but it is weird b/c I wasn't familiar with this song of hers... I hope you get to try some more:)
I listened to a lot of Sarah in the 80's/90's and owned most of her albums. Most of her songs are not sung in her higher register sort of falsetto. If you want to hear a more typical Sarah McLachlan song I'd go for the song Fallen. Yes this was a hit song for her; i'm not sure if that is the type of music your interested in hearing. You gave a very honest review.
Glad you like Enya! So do I, and I'm not afraid to admit it either! lol Btw, if you like Enya, check out Clannad... They did a collaboration with Bono in the 90s, "In A Lifetime".

Since you enjoyed this I have to recommend Bat for Lashes try “The Hunger “ from her latest album. If you want to explore the voice used as another layer in a song no one does that better than the Cocteau Twins. I’ll also recommend Morphine - Thursday once again.
Yeah I like Sarah. Adia is another one to check out. Natalie Merchant - San Andreas Fault Rufus Wainwright - Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk 🖒 he has a great voice
Wow.A very good analysis. Also, you are one of the rare ones who do not interrupt the music unnecessarily and have a decent language.I was happily surprised as you on this one.
Almost any track from this album is powerfully written, played, and sung. As a whole, even Ice Cream is a nice fit. If you liked this track, definitely take a listen to Heather Nova “Walking Higher” from the album Oyster (which has a similar emotional arc to Fumbling Towards Ecstasy).
One female singer who made a big splash with her self-titled debut album in 1979 was Rickie Lee Jones. Though she was more known for her upbeat songs like "Chuck E.'s In Love", I really like the ballad "The Last Chance Texaco" (album version), with it's imagery, and what she does with her harmony vocals near the end. Her style is a lot more conversational than Sarah though, and her upbeat stuff has sort of a 40's jazzy vibe.
I like listening to this song on a freezing -30 day in Canada, with the sun glinting off in the snow. This song sounds like winter here to me. (Even though it's technically "winter's end". I guess you could say it feels like winter never actually ends here! We had snow on our lawn yesterday. )
I think I'm mostly familiar with Sarah McLachlan from some of the carols my mom listens to around Christmas time haha, which are nice enough. This is pretty cool, I could get into this. Nice choice! I've got to mention, I just now discovered Esperanza Spalding and her recent album "12 Little Spells" yesterday. It's really creative vocal jazz. I don't know if I've ever loved an album so much on first listen!
"Angel" really doesn't represent all her music, as you say here, and so it's good to see someone listen to something else. "Fear" wasn't a single and this song is realtively obscure in that sense, and certainly one of her most experimental vocally. The albums Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing are really specacular and were important to me when I was young. It always baffled me a little that she continued to release "Angel" over and over for many years, along with some other songs that were repackaged. It seems as if she had a period of great inspiration and then that moment waned and she just kept mining her best work until she gave up. Almost everything on the Fumbling album is worth your time, and I think Surfacing is a brilliant and cohesive album, too, but since a lot of it is down-tempo (and "Angel" is one of the tracks), I suggest you give "Building a Mystery," "Sweet Surrender" and "Black and White" a chance. I have always loved Sarah's voice, but I know some people who find her unlistenable for reasons I can't understand--particularly "Building a Mystery" for some reason. I really liked that song and its video, and I'd be interested in your take. Her music prior to Fumbling wasn't (for me) as lyrically strong--and she has admitted that in interviews; she always had musical and vocal chops but had to work at cultivating her writing--but there are some real gems such as "I Will Not Forget You" and "The Path of Thorns" that aren't on either of her two best albums. And she lent her voice to a dance track that I really liked called "Silence," produced by Delirium. That would be an interesting one to listen to...it's actually similar in some ways to "Fear" except that it's a more conventional structure and it includes production--it's not quite as ambient but it has similar qualities.
What can I say about SM -- so so good/sweet. I saw SM too many years ago when SM and I were both still kids. I think in Halifax around the time of Touch, not sure if she was still living there?!? She was, for sure, at the time working songs/arrangements for Solace. She was magnetic/mysterious/ethereal and totally the real deal -- an awesome human too, which multiple concerts/connections have only magnified over the years. She is WAY more than her known pop material -- which is mostly very good. Pierre Marchand and SM have had a remarkable collaborative career -- he produces/plays and arranges with SM. He creates the space/atmosphere(s) for her voice in the mix that allows all its glory and range to be showcased -- as you said, it is quite the instrument. She -- and always an ass-kicking band -- can be wholly transcendent. There is, especially in the earlier work a melancholy of the sea/survival/elements and longing or such in her songs. They pull. Keep listening, she adds to any complete music library.
Sarah McLachlan is a fantastic artist, her songwriting, Multi-Instrumentalist and her beautiful Mezzo Soprano voice! She also founded the Lilith Fair tour which promoted all female artists. I have seen her live and her vocals were otherworldly and band were extremely good. Please do reactions/reviews of her music. This song is not about a child. This song is about "connecting" "opening up" "doubt" and "love" She does not 'fear' having/raising a child. Also, "Our" not "Your" those lyrics you're reading are incorrect. Cheers for the review tho.

Stunning song but the studio song is pretty weak compared to the Mirrorball live version (or any live version btw). "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" is great but I slightly prefer "Surfacing"
You are one of only 3 reactions of S.M. on youtube ! ... I prefer the way you ' react ' as you don't stop the song and talk like most others .. it's like listening to music with a friend ...
Reminds me of Enya / Clannad. Saved by the trancey celtic violin. JP, you jokingly say at one point it "kind of makes you wanna cry", which immediately made me think of Budgie, a noisy three piece band from Wales, formed in Cardiff in the late sixties and who made a bit of a name for themselves in the seventies with their special brand of slightly proggy, humorous, hardish rock. Their song Parents from their finest album, 1973's Never Turn Your Back On A Friend is an often neglected epic. I don't know if it always made me cry but these days it reduces me, like the Squonk, to nothing more than a pool of bubbles and tears. Would love to hear your view on it... I'm sure you'll like it but will you actually shed tears? ua-cam.com/video/VTDLbj64k-c/v-deo.html If it's too sad a ride the antidote from the same is album is Breadfan, a proper, hard driving screamer. ua-cam.com/video/54H3EUAzpVg/v-deo.html. You don't appear to have done Genesis Follow You Follow Me from And Then There Were Three yet... another of few which squonkify me, mainly because of the lyrics and who I was with when I first heard it. If they do make you shed a tear, would you share it with us?
Were you listening to Welsh bands in the eighties? Do you remember Sancho Panza, a Budgie like 3 piece from Tredegar I think? Can't find any info anywhere. More Budgie! Should have performed with Shirley Bassey at least once ! Still time! World needs more Budgie!!
I liked this song. I love the register she was singing in. I've heard many male vocalist sing in a falsetto for the whole song. Would this be considered a female falsetto? Anyway, enjoyed the song and reaction. On a separate note, on the last reaction I mentioned reacting to Alex Lifeson's song "Shut up Shutting up". If you do the reaction, do it with Natasha. I'm certain the two of you will enjoy it and you'll understand by the lyrics why the song should be heard with your significant other.
I think I have a way of curing you of the association you have with the stunning song Angel. Watch the film "City of Angels" a few times. It is one of the songs on the soundtrack. Hopefully once you have watched it your association will no longer be so sad.
Ahhhh Sarah....one of my country's brightest lights...a bit surprised at this selection though...not a real strong melody here...I would have suggested the beautiful "Elsewhere" from this album...also you should lend an ear to Adia, I Will Follow You....Sweet Surrender …...caution though...if you watch the accompanying videos (Adia for example)...with her beautiful face behind that voice.....its hard not to fall in love lol….
It's not her best song (and I'm a huge fan) - but hearing her do this song live is an experience. I don't know why it doesn't translate as well. Maybe because it sounds a bit overproduced on the album.
I really got bored with Sarah McLachlan AFTER her third album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Most of the songs on that album, though, are excellent. Try "Wait" or "Ice" or "Possession." If you like the voices being used as instruments, try "I'm Not in Love" by 10cc. I'm getting to your more modern posts... I'm getting there. I promise. LOL
That's not her first album, Wait, Ice and Possession are on her third album, Fumbling Towards Ecstacy. Her first album is Touch, second album is Solace. Vox was her first breakout single, off Touch. I agree I got bored after Fumbling.
Fumbling was her best album. So many great songs. This was just before she became mondo-famous for Lillithfaire.

Ty Doum! We shall see😢
I liked this song.
Ty Dukes, I'll try to convince her lol
I saw her in concert in 2014 and she performed this I was floored that she could still hit those notes!
I think this would be out of Amy Lee’s vocal range.
She would probably have to drop the pitch. Not to say she couldn’t make the song her own.
I think I have a way of curing you of the association you have with the stunning song Angel. Watch the film "City of Angels" a few times. It is one of the songs on the soundtrack. Hopefully once you have watched it your association will no longer be so sad.
Ty John! I may need to
OmGOSH, I am a new follower but you mentioned Rufus so I have to say "please react to Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk by Rufus Wainwright!".
What can you say? Pink Floyd. Echoes. It's such a great track...........wait, this isn't Echoes! What's going on?
Ahhhh Sarah....one of my country's brightest lights...a bit surprised at this selection though...not a real strong melody here...I would have suggested the beautiful "Elsewhere" from this album...also you should lend an ear to Adia, I Will Follow You....Sweet Surrender …...caution though...if you watch the accompanying videos (Adia for example)...with her beautiful face behind that voice.....its hard not to fall in love lol….
Haha, ty Steve!
The never ending story I mean hunger I mean oh fuck it
That was an odd choice for that album. It's overall great. Sweet Surrender. Umph
It's not her best song (and I'm a huge fan) - but hearing her do this song live is an experience. I don't know why it doesn't translate as well. Maybe because it sounds a bit overproduced on the album.
Hm, possibly possibly. Thank you Robyn!
It kind of sounds like a Daniel Lanois production...
I really got bored with Sarah McLachlan AFTER her third album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Most of the songs on that album, though, are excellent. Try "Wait" or "Ice" or "Possession."
If you like the voices being used as instruments, try "I'm Not in Love" by 10cc.
@@macsfe9828 Right you are. I stand corrected. Either way, at least we agree she got boring after FTE.
@@ArtofFreeSpeech Sadly she seems to be most famous for her work after FTE. :(
Fumbling is her best album but I would not have picked this song is nowhere near her best. Very bad choice imho.
didn't like this song at all :(
I like this song, but I'm not in love with the very high pitch for the entire song.
Sarah McLachlan often just don´t work for me - this one especialy , for me feels like the singing and musik has just no connection
