I saw her second row dead center, she was 6 feet away. Best concert ever.
Beth : I've never heard anyone describe Sarah's vocals like the ebb and flow of water. What a remarkably accurate description! Thumbs up! Keep up the great work
It's accurate. It's a very subtle vocal pendulum. There's a hypnotic quality to it because of it.
I've seen her in concert multiple times and I don't think I've ever seen someone perform as constantly beautiful as her. I'm always in awe! Sarah is a gift to the ears
My niece sang this to my Dad in his hospital room in his last days before cancer took him. It was very emotional as Dad seemed to react to her singing even tho sedated. We all had tears. Angel will always be a special song for our family.
Yep
That's right, she's ours. Canadian represent
She makes up for Justin Bieber.
@@AMikeStein Yeah, I don't think it's possible for us to make up for the biebs! Sorry?

Gawd, she's a beaut eh?
@@danielosheigh4793 For sure!
First the dog commercial, then my aunt used this at her husband's funeral. I can't listen to this without falling apart.
This is like dissecting a butterfly to find out why it's so beautiful.
Sarah’s always been one of my favorite singers, period. She’s just pure emotion in everything she does.
I was fortunate enough to get to meet and work with Sarah M, along with few other spectacular artists in OKC at Lilith Fair concert many years ago. She was such a gracious, warm, inviting person, even in spite of having a millions things to do. I would have to say that her and Jewel are two of the absolute best female vocalists I have ever seen live. Truly blessed ladies.
I love how you analyze and describe the singer's vocal techniques, it is more than a reaction, it helps us understand and appreciate the artists' style.
Great breakdown. Sarah is from my hometown, and she's quite rightly venerated in Nova Scotia. Whenever I hear her sing, especially this song, it take me home (while I am far, far away).
I saw Sarah live in Vancouver in 2016. Literally one of the highlights of my life. Her performance blew me away completely!
Ah! Sarah McLachlan. When I listen to her sing, I imagine it’s the quality of singing you’d hear in heaven! Love her and get just as emotional hearing her. Great reaction!
Ahhh Sara, I had a huge crush on her when her first album came out, I remember working in Nova Scotia and hearing her songs everywhere!!!!
Sarahs voice is nothing less than sublime . I cant think of a more beautiful singing voice. There is something divine about her voice.
When a vocal coach is jealous of your voice. That's one hell of a compliment.
I first saw her live in a small club in Houston Texas in the early 90’s before she got so famous. I knew at the time she was going to be big. I would say she’s got the most beautiful female singing voice I’ve ever heard.
Wife and I saw her live in 2003 (hard to believe it was nearly 20 yrs ago!) and the show was fabulous, her performance superb. Sarah is a great artist.
One of the best vocalists we have ever had the honor of supporting here in Canada. Her and her voice, both so hauntingly beautiful. Her music hasn't left my playlist for 20 years now.
Something I have yet to see mentioned in the few months since this is out. This is a live performance. There aren't 37 takes of this one line to get it absolutely perfect. One take, right now... oh and while she's playing the piano accompaniment.
As a wind instrumentalist who only has to make sound out of one instrument I'm in awe of the skills.
This is a great observation...and I totally agree!!
And she wrote lyrics and composed the music too. Collaborating with others naturally
Thank you Beth for this. I got to see Sarah in Waterloo, ON at a small venue on the campus back in the 80's. There was young woman who opened for her who was, as you say, muscling thru the high notes. When Sarah came on I was blown away at the contrast. She was so relaxed and effortless. I was feeling so sorry for that young woman who opened for her. Sarah's last encore was Gloomy Sunday (check it out on youtube)... the audience was stunned... as a BIG Billie Holiday fan I had high expectations... Sarah left me in tears.
Thank you for such a considered and thoughtful reaction to a song that has a very special place in my heart. I was fortunate enough to see her in concert some years ago when she came to the UK. Unforgettable.
Sarah has such a gorgeous voice. And one of the most emotional songs ever written.
Sarah dedicated this song to me twice, once for each of my service dogs and I. I played this song on repeat as they passed away in 2020. This song will always hold great significance to me, and holds a great memories. It was comforting at the time of the dedications, and comforting at the time of my boys passing. I also used this song at my father's funeral. Thank you so much Sarah for all that you have done for me.
Wait. Hold up. How did you meet Sarah Mcchlalan!!?
@@MaleOrderBride I've met with her many times. I don't even know how many now, too many to count. I first met her at a meet and greet, and then we got to talking, and I was a guest at several of her shows, the rest is history. I am extremely lucky to have her in my life, she has given me so much, especially the dedications. I can't wait for her to meet my new service dog, Milo, and hope that she will dedicate this to him as well.
@@tommygirl6659 amazing!!
You'll have to write a book about your friendship together!
@@MaleOrderBride I may share bits and pieces here and there, for the most part, I keep what happens between us, private. Also, unfortunately, I am losing my memory, so I am thankful for the video's I have, to remind me of previous times, and I'll be sure in the future to make sure that someone is taping the whole time
@@tommygirl6659 oh of course not! It sounds like you are her special confidant and Minder. I'm surprized you are even allowed to tell us all this stuff! Lol
I had the privilege of hearing her sing this in concert back in 2008. She has a truly beautiful voice. She is so underrated.
"It makes me want to cry straight away" LOL Beth, I'm Canadian, she's ours... and we all feel that and love that about her... she 'll bleed every tear from you effortlessly :) So amazing ... thanks for doing this one! :)
I was into her music, back in the 90s, when I was a teenage boy. Many great songs like Into the Fire.
I am a 60 year old man who has played in bands all my life, this song still brings tears to my eyes. Just beautiful.
Makes me cry everytime I hear this song.
Those dog commercials and the Toy Story 2 Jessie memory scene always make me cry because of her
She used this song as a background for a SPCA commercial in Canada and between her voice, the words of the song, and seeing poor sweet animals that needed to be saved from inhumane owners, this song crushes the soul of most Canadians who hear it!
Americans too.
It was actually the the american SPCA commercials, not Canadian. She raised $30 million dollars for them
And a whole bunch of Americans, too! It guts me every time because I just want to save them all!
It rips the heart out of this old Yankee as well,I discovered it just after losing a beloved old Samoyed who was an 87 lb lamb in wolf's clothing, now years later it brings to mind all the furry friends awaiting me at that bridge in the future, amazing how they can pick up on feelings, as it hit home this time a little black, and white Pomeranian/Eskimo ball of energy snuggled in tight against me in support.
RIP Jonathan Melvoin , so sad the real meaning of this masterpiece has been lost and we are still losing troubled artists to the same fate.
Blast from my past. My wife and I used go listen to her a lot in the early 2000s. Such a good singer.
That song always chokes me up she has an amazing voice
I love how big of a heart you have. I enjoy watching and listening to your reactions. I watch a lot of music reaction channels but I always come back to yours. ❤
Beth - Just want to say how much I enjoyed your emotional reaction to this live performance by Sarah McLachlan. The fact that you had heard this song many times before... and you still had such a powerful emotional reaction to it - while doing your best to analyze the performance - shows just how strongly her performance can resonate with listeners.
Incredibly powerful song beautifully sung and performed by an amazing singer song writer. Love her. She wrote this for her brother that committed suicide.
Sarah wrote this song about the Smashing Pumpkins' touring keyboard player, who died from a heroin overdose. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_(Sarah_McLachlan_song)
@@DavidBrianPaley You are correct!
🇨🇦🇨🇦 I saw her live. She waved at me in her cool fringe jacket as she was leaving the stage. My favorite live show. Classic Sarah. Love her yodel. Canadian for sure. I remember hearing her way back late 70s.. I remember telling my friends this girls gonna be famous!! ❤️🇨🇦❤️ This was on movie City of Angels???
I have always loved her so much, her voice just drips with emotion! Thank you so much for reacting to her, you are correct she has a very beautiful heart as well!
Unique talent. Thanks Sarah
This version has been my fav for this tune for a minute. Thanks!
I'm so glad you reacted to this recording. I have seen her live a few times and you know what? It's impossible not to tear up during this song. Her voice is mesmerizing.
Afterglow Live is an absolute gem. Check out Possession and Fear/Trainwreck from the same show 😉
I don’t hear an accent.... but she’s from my hometown 😆
You stole my exact comment! Think you're pretty smart, eh? Lol.
Erin I hope you are referring to Halifax, Nova Scotia (Sarah's and my hometown) and not Vancouver!
She has an accent.
Another Canadian great, thank you. Loving your site from British Colombia tonight. Cheers
Welcome!
One of my favorite artists ever. Amazing live singer. Listened to Fumbling towards ecstasy in the early 90s and have loved her every since. Thanks Beth
She’s my favorite female singer. Angelic voice.I’ve always wanted to see her live.
She is amazing live, better than her albums❤
Kelly Hawkins Yes, I LOVE Mirrorball. That might be as close as I get. 😞
Pretty awesome seeing you react to something so local to me. Sarah grew up less than an hour's drive from where I'm sitting right now here in Nova Scotia Canada.
Was able to see her the lest two years that she did the Lilith tour in the late 90's in a relatively small amphitheater in Milwaukee, WI. Wonderful shows graced with her show at the end of 5 performers!
This is was a great breakdown on her performance. More detailed about technique. I enjoyed your reaction.
Sarah McLachlan’s voice always feels like a caress.
If you ever get a chance, do a reaction to her song "Wait" from the same event, its breath taking from the start and how amazingly well she plays her guitar, which is incredibly underrated. She plays all the right chords and apreggios, with the right slow pace, and the right effect, it will break you down .
Excellent reaction and analysis. As a vocalist, this is exactly the reason I am a subscriber to Beth's channel.....💖
Great breakdown!!! I just love it when you go full-on vocal wonk digging deep into the technical aspects of the performance
The breaking and falling off of her voice makes her sound more vulnerable, and matches the song perfectly. It's brilliant.
I love love Sarah’s voice it’s is so amazing. Haunting and emotionally beautiful. I like when you can hear her accent. 😁
Beautiful song from one of my fave artists!
Very precise description of Sarah's voice. Thank you. 😘
Beth, you are gorgeous and sing like an angel. When you said you were crying, I wanted to hold and comfort you. Thank you for sharing your passion for singing.
Saw her live in concert once. So amazing!
Me too, at the Cambridge Corn Exchange in England. Superb, and an ace band too. Became an instant fan when she performed Possession (piano version) on Jools Holland’s show here.
This song always gets me misty eyed - especially ever since it played after my grandfather's (opa's) funeral - got in the car, and what song comes on, this one!
I've followed Sarah almost from day 1 (her second album, Solace, is what grabbed me - then Fumbling Towards Ecstasy came out, and I was hooked!!) Her voice is ethereal! It isn't conventional (especially those 'flips' you mention - but that kind of endears her to me). I've seen her live, and she is just magnificent, and she seems like a wonderful, very grounded person - but of course, many maritimers are! (she's from Nova Scotia)
Her voice is just angelic. Your analysis is spot on.
Love your channel, showing my daughter
Beth you are by far my favorite reactor
Such an amazing singer. I love her.
Such a beautiful voice...
Great song , this song means so much to so many people in a personal way. So emotional
Beautiful voice 😍
One of the Greatest microphone singer I have ever heard ❤
Most beatiful voice i ve heard,tq
One of my favourite artists and songs by her :) I even tried to sing it in my vocal learning days. For me the notes weren't the problem, the rhythm was, as far as remember it. Couldn't help but singning alone, good old times :)
I just discovered a band called Foxes and Fossils. They do covers of classic songs, and their vocal harmonies are INSANE. Please check out their cover of "Seven Bridges Road". I think you will _LOVE_ it.🧡 Haunting is the perfect description of Sarah's voice. It's so emotion filled.
You don't have to kill for something you already have Beth. Thanks for sharing your passion.
A first-time commentator here, I found your channel a week ago (yes, I'm a Nightwish fan so that's how I found you ) and have been watching your old videos. I really love your passion for music. As far as Sarah is concerned, she is the master at capturing so much emotion with such subtle nuance. Also, Surfacing is a brilliant and iconic album and while "Angel" is the go-to "feels" song "Full of Grace" hits me every time and I get "Building a Mystery" stuck in my head for days.
Another great reaction Beth. Thanks for getting Sarah on the Channel
Been a sub for a while. I am not a singer. You give me an ear and new level of admirerition for the talented. Your love for the craft comes out every time and a youthful beauty adds to your countenance.
I have missed you. You amaze me And I can't replace your joy with any other.
She wrote this song for the touring keyboardist for Smashing Pumpkins, Jonathan Melvoin, he died of a heroin overdose. It's basically about not wanting to take care of other people's problems, but needing to take care of yourself and escape. The "Angel" in the song is, in context, drug use.
She's also a fantastic pianist and guitar player 😉
Try listening to “Fare Thee Well” by the Rankin Family.
Or “We Rise Again”
I love your breakdowns of the techniques as well as your personal emotional attachment to the vocals. I’d love to watch you analyze Joy Williams of The Civil Wars. Especially the song “Falling”. She and John Paul harmonize so well on most of their songs, but “Falling” really showcases her and her lovely voice.
I'm a fan of Sarah McLaughlins. I have seen her twice in concert- in Seattle. I don't know how to explain her voice. There is no way not to tear up, when listening to her music! Her songs express what we are feeling, and give us/me comfort in times when we need it.

Beth, you have a great voice!
You made me cry too.
Wonderful ❤
I have the perfect thing to say about Sarah McLachlan's voice, Angelic.
She's just great... What about Alison Krauss, another angel's voice...
I've seen Alison with Robert Plant, with and without Union Station and she's on a whole other level. Truly amazing.
If you like Alison you would probably like Crooked Still. Singer reminds me of Alison. Great "new-grass" band as well, with a cello and sometimes a fiddle when Brittany Haas joins them. Cheers.
@@michaelhoilman6897 thanks Michael. I love them too...
Agreed, Alison Krauss is brilliant!
A long time favorite of mine. Thanks, enjoy and stay safe.
It's always interesting to listen to Sarah sing this song live ( I've seen her in concert 5 times), because she sings this song in a slightly more upbeat manner than how it originally sounded on her album Surfacing ( track 7). Considering the inspiration for her writing this song (the overdose of Smashing Pumpkins keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin), she still is able to sing it in an upbeat manner. And she is a amazing person. Having had the chance to meet her and talk with her, she's very down to earth and easy going.
Sarah is such an underrated vocalists! Thanks for doing this!
Sarah is not underrated or under appreciated, she just isn't as popular as someone of her talents should be. That is quite often the case as most of the time the most popular isn't actually very good, they/it just had the most backing/financing and appealed to a specific demographic that others could make the most money off of. Whether it's singers, songs, celebrities, movies, tv shows, etc, rarely does the cream rise all the way to the top.
Tq Beth ,Sarah one's f my fav singer, her voice so angelic, this song makes me overwhelmed n emo 💕
It must be incredible to be able to sit by yourself at a piano and make a masterpiece like that.
Could not be more lovely
I fell in love with Sarah McLachlan voice the very 1st time I heard her!! I believe I cried as well. Her voice is unequivocally Angelic!
FOREVER LOVE Sarah McLachlan!
www.youtube.com/@BethRoars thank you so very much for the insight on the vocals.
@BethRoars would love to hear you sing as well!
All i can say is: awwww 😊. What a lovely honest and emotional analysis of this song.
Love Sarah and love your videos. 👍❤😊 sending love from 🇨🇦
Yay! Thank you!
Hello Beth- sincere new fan in the last 7 months. After viewing 50 plus reactions around long work days; I thought I’d offer what makes you, you❤
*Honesty- If it sounds good but is unhealthy- you call it. If a bit u healthy (Steven Tyler) you give us great knowledge. Fascinating to learn his vocal chord injury was surprisingly Not due to singing
*Your ability to educate without being militant. I don’t sing well & don’t play the drums perfectly but I can do dial into the word incredible value & confidence you must give your students…trying to find their way.
You are a winner of life & that was just a bit, from a NY music lover of many genres, of what to me,
Makes You…You. PS: Thanks for Being You to Us❤️
My Dad passed away on January 7th 2001 the day after my 54th Birthday at the age of 90. He requested this song to be played during his home going service and I made sure it was. 21 years ago this coming Friday January 7th the day after my 75th birthday. Love this song. It will be played at my home going service also. Beautiful song.
Always loved her voice and songs. Her duet of this song with josh groban was amazing, also Josh's song remember when it rains.
