I love to mix different styles and techniques, so i decided to scribble a hand in Adobe Fresko on my iPad. You could also use Photoshop on your desktop, a simple graphic shape or a pic of a real hand of course.
After scribbling the hand, we start to animate the transition in After Effects by drawing a path, which we then animate. We increase the stroke width of the path until the whole screen is covered.
Then we use the taper option to adjust and animate the shape, add a wave warp and a gradient ramp.
We add several more layers and add the scribbled hand.
We link it to the animation using the create Nulls from Paths script.
Then we add two layers of shade to add some depth and finally reveal footage.
► Software: Adobe After Effects 17.5

Toop bro very very goooooood
Thanks 🔥 Glad you like it!
Love this tutorial! I love how you get straight into the meat, and realize that this is meant for people that are already experienced in AE, but my only bit of feedback is that you go a little quick.
That being said, thank you so much!
Hi! You're so welcome! Thanks very much for your feedback! I really appreciate it!
you can always dial down the speed of the video playback :)
For the footage reveal, I duplicated stroke 5 and added footage below and set alpha matte, but I hit play the strokes just vanish when it gets to the footage reveal unlike your example where the they move to reveal the footage?
Hi! Did you hide the gradient effect, so that stroke 5 has a white fill?
You could also try and set it to luma matte. That should work as well.
Naice man.
Thanks very much!
hey Manuel! wanted to ask what can i used instead of the "taper property" because my version of AE is a bit earlier than yours and I don't have enough time and money to get the latest AE :(
Hi Karina! Check out this video. I use solids and masks for the wave transition. You could use this technique to create the swipe transition.
ua-cam.com/video/0dU3E-6VKCo/v-deo.html
I was like: oh, that's exactly what I need!
Then I look at the name of the channel... it's probably going to be tough to make. 😂
No way! 😂😂 It’s not that bad…
thankyou so much for the tutorial, also i want to ask , how can we change footage multiple times without making the transition again and again?
You’re welcome! A good way to do that is to pre-comp your footage. So you can replace the footage inside the pre-comp and it doesn’t affect the transition.
Hey Manuel! *This is excellent,* once again. I have a problem though my finger isn't following the exact tip of the Stroke 1. The tip of the stroke oscillates up and down a bit as it moves forward but my null/finger doesn't link exactly (seems to taper off). Any help to correct this please?
Hey Alex, if your finger isn't following along it might be because your anchor point is off. You need to move it to the same position as the Null anchor point.
I think you can't prevent the tips from moving inn this case. But there is another technic where you mirror the waves. I used it here: ua-cam.com/video/H1ZK8bqz33c/v-deo.html
@@ManueldoesMotion Thank you! That other technique may be perfect in trying to correct this.
Thank you so much for the tutorial!
Can't really get the footage reveal like yours. I duplicated Stroke 5, added footage below and set alpha matte, but it just appears abruptly and seems to go over the layers. Also tried to set to luma matte. Is there a chance to fix it?
Hey! Sure thing! Is the stroke white? Otherwise it doesn't work as track matte.
@@ManueldoesMotion thanks for responding)
Yes it’s white, and it works as track matte, however in your tutorial it seems like the transition ends and then footage appears but in mine it just sharply appears
@@evushka2682 Yeah, same thing keeps happening to me. did you ever figure it out? Doesn't look like the creator ever responded again...
hey thanks for the tutorial! but sad why I don't have taper on my AE...
Tapered shape strokes are included since AE 17.1
You might haver to update your After Effects.
You can make a mask on the layer and it does the same job. I have followed the tutorial and succeeded
Hi, I´m from Colombia so apologize if my English isn´t perfect. I´v a question, if i want to work in premir with that animation, How i put the transition like a croma without revealing it in AE and in this way use the transition many times on premier without put the alfa on AE. Thanks for the tutorial
Hi! No worries, your English is great! Thanks very much!
One way would be to render out the transition without the "mask" layer and the background layer. Channels: RGB+Alpha - Straight (Unmatted). And then render out the "mask" layer separately. Channels: RGB+Alpha - Straight (Unmatted) You can import the two movies into premier and use the "mask" movie as alpha or luma channel for the footage you want to reveal.
Maybe this helps as well: www.schoolofmotion.com/blog/after-effects-to-premiere-workflows
@@ManueldoesMotion Thanks, i will do that, thanks so much for the advices.
can you show us the short cuts and the setting of your pen tablet please
Hi! I only use default shortcuts, because I am really bad at remembering them 😬
it seems this effect only works for AE 2020 above, my 2018 AE doesn't have taper option :(
Tapered strokes are included since After Effects 17.1
How do i export this to use in the OBS Studio?
You need to render it without background, so that it is transparent. RGB + Straight Alpha Channel
i dont have the taper property for the stroke path?
It comes with After Effects since Ae2018.
The end of the shape layer when it transitions into the video it shows it's taped inward like an inward arrow... how is that done?
I used one of the wave layers as track matte to reveal the video.
Lessgoooo
Woohooo 🙌🏻
How can we track Matte the video to revel?
I used one of the wave layers as track matte.
There is no TAPER PROPERTY in my After Effects, how do I do it
You use a solid with a mask to create the shape.
there is no taper option on my after effect
It is included in After Effects since AE 2018.
Amazing, How many Ram do You have in your Mac?
Thx very much! I have 32GB of Ram.
@@ManueldoesMotion Oh that's cool I'm planning on changing my laptop but I didn't know if choose 16 or 32 of RAM, I think I'll go for the 32, thanks a lot :)
With 32GB you can open more applications at the same time. And the laptop probably lasts longer as it can deal better with future software and system updates which probably need more RAM...
💖
Thanks!
thanks for teaching but defo you go too fast so one doesn't really want to follow. There are many videos that explain more in detail and calmly so it's better to use time doing those. Good technique anyway, thanks for showing

Bro how do you not have a million subscribers
Idk? Maybe sometime;) 😊
sorry bro, but the end result of your tutorial was different from what you showed in the beginning.
ít's too fast, please make it more understandable
It's a great video but WHY on earth did you have to add that horrid BG music?!
It's one of my older tutorials:)
unbearable disgusting music; what s good for when u have to pay attention to the explanations?
Thanks very much for your feedback.
hello , first thanks for the amazin video , but also im facing a problem , my graph editor , im following the same exact steps as u but still one of the line wont make any curves , only going up from the very start and end points making no curves at all @manuel does motion
You’re welcome! Maybe it’s because the value isn’t actually animated. If you only animated the y-value of the position, you won’t be able to change the curve of the x-value for example.
