    davetileguy they hold up to salt water just fine, the first offshore turbine was in stalled in 1991. They know what they are doing.

    Am I strange but in the right place I think wind turbines are quite nice to look at - they are strangely hypnotic and quite relaxing, even close up. I agree that in some locales they can detract from picturesque landscapes, but offshore or in a desert or remote area they look cool.

    I'm more for the newer attempts at using rotor-less wind machines, that don't have big rotating blades on them.

      kx250fmotocross Watching politicians on TV that lie scares the shit out.
      Wind turbines are bringing down the cost of electricity in comparison to nuclear power.
      Land owners get rent and county's get a new source of tax revenue.
      Pay no attention to NIMBY types that are jealous of their neighbours who have them. They missed out as they weren't offered a chance to sign.up.

    Great except you need to put thousands of them in order for them to compensate the base power produced by nuclear and coal, Also by putting enourmous amounts of wind turbines in the sea dosen't that blockade shipping lanes and also make the energy supply of the country very easy to attack and also a big storm would do alot of damage to those wind turbines.

      They use land (and sea space) very inefficiently. A tale is passed around that
      wind turbines use "very little land" just because of their base footprint, which is absurd. RE storms, even the ones on land are hard to maintain. The wind industry is full of propaganda and a prime example of phony environmentalism.

  • @DanFrederiksen
    @DanFrederiksen 10 років тому

    Hasn't the price of wind energy gone up in the last 20 years because they moved out to sea?

    • @Kie-7077
      @Kie-7077 9 років тому

      It's worth it, see:
      earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-4.92,53.97,1821
      Note how the sea areas have much higher wind that land areas. Energy is the square of speed so 15mph wind generates 2.25x as much energy as 10mph wind.
      So whilst the turbines may cost more to install out at sea, they more than make up for it by generating more. Also I'm surprised this video didn't mention that taller turbines hit more reliable and faster wind.

    • @Kie-7077
      @Kie-7077 9 років тому

      Kie 7077
      Oops correction:
      Energy is the cube of speed so 15mph wind generates 3.375x as much energy as 10mph wind!!!

    • @DanFrederiksen
      @DanFrederiksen 9 років тому

      Kie 7077 if the price per MWh has gone up then clearly it's not worth it.
      and isn't it the square of the speed?

    The British tax payer doesn't pay for it, in actual fact if the UK government pulled there finger out we could make some money on the uprise of this industry rather than come in after the boom like we always do.

    Sighhhhhh Sealand ? two concrete tubes sticking out of the water that ALMOST qualifies as an 8,000 part machine turning 24/ 7 ,(NOT !) so tell me genius would the turbine arms and armature also be made from Concrete ? your dreamworld must be sooo simple.

  • @Zoidode

    Well there are offshore windfarms & oil/gas rigs that are in operation for 20-30 years already.
    Why are you so obsessed with talking in absolutes? You could say: "I doubt that the increased maintainance required to operate turbines offshore makes much sense."
    But you are like "NOTHING can stand salt water for 10 or 15 years".
    I am no big fan of huge offshore projects myself though, because it nullifies the key benefit of renewables, the ability to apply them in a decentralized fashion.

    Wind turbines, most inefficient way known to man to produce electricity, every megawatt they produce has to have same megawatt on standby, fuelled by coal or natural gas, most inefficient.

      What's wrong with that ??? Most recent off shore wind turbine have a 63% capacity factor (Haliade X). If your countries rely massively on natural gas or coal, you can easily cut by half your fossil resource consumption for electricity generation.

    I don't want giant windmills...with public money so Utilities can meter me like a slave.. I want millions of little windmills like the one to pump water on my great grandfather's farm. a little windmill on the roof of each solar panelled house. enough to turn on a few lights, and heat my electric blanket :)

    Vestas ruins vistas with pseudo-green ideology. The human footprint is being depressingly expanded by these eyesores. "Driving down the cost" is a big lie, considering the massive subsidies and overstated, intermittent power output. Another thing not often mentioned is the relatively short life of the gearboxes and other high-stress components.
