My issue after 3-plus years of keto and 5-plus years (including keto) of very-low-carb, is that I seem to be perpetually in a high state of gluconeogenesis. I _have to_ eat nearly zero carb (I'm high protein, because I'm trying to preserve muscle mass at 60) to keep my blood sugar under 110 or 120, even moderately fasted. If I add even a small amount of "healthy carbs" I seem to fill up my glycogen reserves and run between 120 and 130 at odd times (several hours after eating.)
I'm wondering if reading the Atkins book for clues on adding back healthy carbs will help. After Jason Fung actually endorsed it, I'm thinking about Lumen, but there are many detractors, and I don't particularly like being told what to eat spur of the moment. I've been trying to eat a lot of low-carb salads lately (with a generous wild salmon portion), and it's not working for me.
I lost a lot of weight with -low carb- keto and fasting, but I think too much of it was muscle (possibly because I wasn't doing resistance training), which is why I went high-protein. I gained back about 20% of what I lost, much of it skeletal muscle, and I'm much healthier aside from blood sugar. I seem to be leaning out (and losing fat again, but mostly because I do whole-day and two- or three-day fasts most weekends.)
I'm a bit baffled at this point.

@NansGlobalKitcheni had a similar experience. I usually fast for 21 hours plus before my meal. When I decided to fast for a longer period it seemed to kickstart weight loss. Also I always walk after my one meal for the day. I usually do 3 miles in the morning and 2 miles after dinner. This is working well for me. I'm 68 and coping easily with this.

I appreciate your understanding and explanation of blood sugars. I want to add something else. Over the past two years, I have experienced eight surgeries, and the foot is still not fixed. Originally I had two surgeries to correct the foot, but the wound became infected and the next five surgeries were used to try to arrest the infection. I experienced three stays in the hospital and an allergic reaction to the antibiotics. Finally, they removed all the hardware, because the infection had settled in the Teflon adhesions and anchors for the screws. I am still waiting for the next surgery, having been put in a cast to reduce the swelling in the joints. I say all of this to point out that any pain or wound in the body, causes stress, which raises blood sugar. I began the year going on a carnivore diet, no carbs .My most recent A1C was 5.6. My sugar still raises due to the pain I endure. It causes frustration, because if my sugar is high, the doctor won't operate. But in order to lower the sugar, I take oral medicine, which raises the insulin and causes weight gain. It's a vicious cycle, but I want others to know, it's not just what you eat, though that is a great part of it. There are other issues including illness, or an injury, or even some medications that can also raise your blood sugar.

Have you tried OMAD(One Meal A Day) or intermittent fasting? Maybe it would help?

    • @lowellmorton1708
      @lowellmorton1708 10 днів тому

@@Esselle1 I've not done OMAD, but currently I'm on a 19-5 eating window. Fasting is something totally different. Your body has a time to totally rest and your digestive system benefits tremendously. Any time you are still eating within the 24 hour period, you are not getting the full benefits of fasting. I would recommend that you begin slowly. Start with only about 3 days. Then next time increase the time. You will find that once you get accustomed to the process, your body will adjust, and you'll be able to increase the amount of time fasting. Just remember that the body can only survive about 3 days without water. It can survive 40 days without food. And when fasting, remember that whatever you are putting in your body will be magnified. I only use bottled or purified water during a fast. The chemicals that are put in public water will be intensified in your system. I also try to eliminate many of my supplements and prescriptions. You need to check with your doctor about this step, though. Just be prepared that many doctors do not know how to direct you through a fast and you need to know what to say if they try to tell you not to do it. My doctor has learned not to try to talk me out of it. He knows I understand my body and I'm careful in what I'm doing.

Think of it like this. If we as humans were not designed to eat a variety of foods from different sources, then we wouldn't have a pancreas! The exocrine pancreas produces enzymes that help to digest food, particularly protein. The endocrine pancreas makes the hormone insulin, which helps to control blood sugar levels. That in of itself tells me that mother nature intended on us to eat and enjoy life! The problem is all our foods these days are processed and contain God knows what kind of harmful chemicals. Not only that, but we tend to overindulge on everything then sit around and watch TV or play on the computer! Great video!

I'm 67 and Type 2. Whenever my blood glucose reading is below 70 in the mornings, I drink a Ensure that has 9 or more mg of protein in it. For me, this is way better than eating something sugary. Ensure is portable and I take one with me everywhere I go. I also keep some beside my bed. My blood sugars are usually 70- 100 in the mornings before a meal and late in the afternoon before my evening meal, it runs anywhere from 150 to 220. My A1C runs between 6 and 7.3. When I was initially diagnosed as a diabetic my blood sugar was almost 900. I thought that my symptoms were due to me having high blood pressure and being anemic and working a demanding job. If I did everything that my Endocrinologist told me to do, I'd be dead by now. I go by how I feel, my glucose numbers and my blood pressure numbers.

Ensure is full of horrible ingredients!! Doctors suggest those and boost which is sad.. I'm gonna tell u like I tell my mommy bc y'all are the same age, 😅 look at those ingredients if you can't pronounce EVERY word in your food or drink don't eat it. Protein shakes> check out OWYN shakes. ALL the ingredients are clean, no hidden sugars or artificial sugars. Our bodys can't break that fake sugar down. You got this.. The shake I suggested doesn't taste as good as those thats bad for u because it's good for you... I loved Quest and Premier shakes prior to switching so I know the taste takes some getting used to, but fight through to get in your protein if doing a shake.. Also the ingredients to avoid in your shakes are corn maltodextrin, sugar, canola oil, cellulose gel, carrageenan, and soy protein...

Hello, I am new to your channel and have just looked through your playlists. I've got myself in a bad way (100lbs overweight, Type 2 Diabetes, BPH, HBP, and MDD to name a few). Have you looked into creating a "generic weight loss plan" playlist broken down into weekly programs, i.e. starter, week 1, week 2, etc..., that spell out a meal plan and accompanying exercise plan? It would be nice to include references who are looking to break a caffeine/soda and/or sugar addiction or for those who would like to switch to a more plant-based diet, but still have access to meat substitutes. While also including the specific videos of what you are attempting to accomplish that week as you follow the plan. i.e. starter week, it is about lessening the dependency on sodas/caffeine and eating the right food that will stabilize your blood sugar, decrease insulin resistance and lower your a1c. I'm betting the majority of your videos already have this information, it's just as a new viewer (admittedly looking for an easy way to curate the information to start the process), it's a lot of information to poor through. Just a thought. thanks.

I have some unknown congenital neuropathy, can do about 30-40 hours fasting before body goes weak, tremmors, nausea, dry heaves, vomittimg, fever, bad headaches, etc. So I stick to OMAD, and maybe every 2-4 weeks, try to push a bit longer, then eat extra if necessary. Most veggies aren't well tolerated. But I do ok with broccoli or lightly blanched or lightly steamed kale or spinach, rather than raw. I don't do well with too many hard nuts, they blowright through me. A modest amount of carbs via a bit of rice, pasta, or bread seems to make my body happy. ½-¾ cup of rice, 2-4 slices of bread, 6-8oz pasta. Mostly avoid sugary foods, fruits, veggies, but drink OJ one gallon jug a month or so as needed, especially if heavy sweatting leads to nausea, as electrolyres get restored. A banana now and then, 2-4 a month or less. Could use testing to see how bad things are. Not great but not horrible either. Fair bit of room for improvement. Could do with weight loss, gut health, inflammation, pain, and cognitive decline management, as well as do absolutely everything to protect my dwindling muscle and neuron health.

I think that you are forgetting one key aspect to measure, Sten, and that is how you feel from the time you get up to the time you go to bed. If you wake up fired up and ready to go and you have sustained energy all day and then you sleep well in a normal pattern then there is no reason to suspect that there is anything wrong with your body function. After 12.5 years of eating a nutrient dense diet I can tell when something is out of balance and correct it quickly without tests or medical intervention. Thanks for an informative and thought provoking video, I hope that people are starting to get your message.

In fact I have been T2D for 8 years and this is the first time I have really understood what is going on in my body. Thank you so much. By the way. My doctor found it strange when I asked her about blood sugar monitors. She got quite off actually. A bit spikey. She said I did not need fo do this just keep taking the meds and eat normal. Well I got a monitor because I want to see how my body reacts to different foods.....after exercise etc. Every diabetic is different. We might all react to foods differently. The good thing about the monitor is I can tailor my food...timing if meals to achieve what your second graph showed which is balance with no sugar spikes. Thank you

I’ve heard that some foods require much more energy to digest. I think they mentioned that when eating almonds, 30% of the calories are used just to digest them. If you’re eating food that is ground and processed, a lot of the work has already been done. I also suspect that when we eat certain foods, some of the food isn’t fully broken down and absorbed and exits the body without contributing any calories.

In France we have an old saying: Eat like a king in the morning, like a prince at noon, and like a pauper in the evening. I've found that old ways are always wise, ancestors always known for example the good influence of apple cider vinegar (lower the glycemic spike by 20,30%) without modern science.

I did get into high carb eating addiction a few times, and it is hard for me to then break out of it again. But i found out recently, that it might be also an coping mechanism for me for an anxiety disorder. But in then the bad foods makes the anxiety way worse which makes the craving for more bad foods way stronger, so it is easy to get trapped into that cycle. It also does not help it takes an while including strong withdrawal symptoms to break out again, and go back to healthy foods

I have been type 2 for nearly 2 years, doc started me on Metformin 500mg morning and 750mg night, fairly quickly I started seeing lows of 45 -55 in the morning so I quit the 750mg and just took the 500, now during this whole time I started eating a lot of eggs, 3 eggs scrambled with a couple tablespoons of EV Coconut oil mixed in, a rasher of English back bacon and two slices of multigrain toast with real butter on. I cut out pretty much all sources of sugar and I'm a huge chocoholic. I don't drink alcohol or smoke. Now 18 months later I haven't taken my Metformin for 2 months, my Blood sugar reading is between 75 and 95 every morning, after eating spikes are rarely over 150 and tonight after a kebab and fries at 6pm (it's 9pm now) and a few biscuits and a chocolate bar (Cadbury Picnic) I just tested my blood sugar and it is at 115. Tonights food is just a Friday night cheat treat night, as my wife and I have also been 16:8 fasting for 3 weeks. Weight loss for me is slow but I have been desperately overweight by at least 40 kilos so there is a lot to shift. Feel like I have got type 2 beaten but still determined to keep up the dietary changes

@@Carnivore1959 You can get relatively high blood glucose from eating too much protein, but over 100 years ago people were not eating huge amounts of protein or carbs, nor were they typically eating 3+ times a day. They also tended to physically work harder. It is reasonable to assume most people did not have high blood glucose and there is certainly not evidence of significant metabolic disease. Except maybe for Egyptians (specifically Pharaohs), Peruvians, and Romans which coincidentally were higher grain diets.

For the past 2 yrs I have been on mostly keto and IF but the recent blood work showed my a1c at an all time high of 5.8. Blood work is also showing I’m anemic but my iron, B12, folic acid are all higher than normal. Every doctor I spoke to at Kaiser said it’s not a problem and they will not test for my insulin levels or look into why I’m anemic because it’s not that severe 🤯
I don’t understand Kaiser, they want people to become super sick before they would do anything?? Can’t wait to change out of Kaiser next year.

Dr Ken Berry explained that if you are eating a more healthy diet, carnivore, I can’t remember if he also mentioned Keto, your blood cells are more healthy and lasting longer, so A1C may be slightly higher. You may want to check out his channel and search for A1c results , for a more concise explanation.

I am an RN. I had a patient with anemia, not iron deficiency, who Inherited a genetic disorder, Thalassemia minor, aka Mediterranean anemia. To rule this out, more blood tests are needed and a consultation from a hematologist. Can you ask your doctor for a consult with a specialist? If you female, you may use that as a reason for referral because you “may plan to get pregnant soon. “ Or if you have children, you want to know if they can have this trait. If you are male, you want to know because you could pass the disorder to a potential child. No need to worry much about this condition, my patient is a senior citizen, lived a great life, had children who are healthy. She just can’t donate blood. Iron is not the cure.
