I like to learn basic phrases in different languages because I’m Native American coming from a tribe/reservation with only a small amount of fluent speaker left it makes me feel happy to learn! Communicating and learning different languages makes me feel better about how much my culture and traditions have died. What I love most about these videos is that it demonstrates how people will respect you if you simply make an effort to learn something about their culture. I learned American Sign Language in college just so I could communicate with someone deaf, even if it meant using it for a brief conversation. It's a good feeling trying to make that effort.

I got to the airport in Hong Kong and had to find a policeman with a red patch on his uniform: that indicated they spoke English. I think you are amazing. Great video!
I met a black man in GuangZhou airport several years ago, he was helping his black friend to check it. When the moment he spoke, OMG, so perfect his mandarin is! Even with a beautiful broadcast accent, no Beijing accent, no southern accent, exactly the same with TV! the same shocked staff said"his mandarin is better than 99% native Chinese". Really curious about that man's identify, I guess maybe he's kind of diplomatic staff.

Just about everyone in the US takes a language class. Most people I've met took two or three years of a language, mostly French or Spanish. Other more urban areas offer more. Most people just don't learn Chinese because it's a very different language and this guy speaks it very well.
