- I took my wife and my mom to New York recently, and I couldn’t go there without making a trip up to the famous New York City Chinatowns. I visited Manhattan Chinatown as well as Flushing Chinatown in Queens, and it was AMAZING. It felt like being back in China. How did Chinese people respond to hearing a white guy speaking Mandarin? Let’s take a look.

Those women mistook him for Xiaoma. What an insult. Xiaoma's mandarin couldn't hold a candle up to Chris.
Bruh both are good. Laoma has more of a dialectual tone which they like.
@@kitinthegym Xiaoma has a very thick non-native accent. Chris, on the other hand, sounds totally native. His accent is literally better than 99% of people in China.
Xiaoma's mandarin is good but he speaks it like a foreigner who is well-versed in mandarin. Laoma's mandarin is indistinguishable from a local. Hence the "lao" status!

Yeah I was at both Manhattan and Flushing Chinatown recently--both places are MUST-GO'S. Highly recommend to stop by if you're in either NYC or Queens.

也不是標不表準問題 語言沒標準性 只是他說得非常順暢 文法辭彙都很精準 絕對比大多數中國人都好
Really appreciate both subtitles, helps me pick out Chinese words I missed. My listening comprehension sucks as I haven't found many resources to practice it, and because of that, I can't understand a ton of what they're saying without them. The subtitles tell me it's a super basic sentence I know so naturally when reading and writing, but with the strong accents and speed, I just couldn't get it without the subs. I felt so stupid not being able to do it without subtitles, it's a bit frustrating when I have been studying daily for over 2 years
Any tips you can give to someone who has been self taught for a while? I don't have a ton of time to watch TV shows, but I am open to give anything a go. I figured listening to a podcast I can barely understand wouldn't be very motivating, despite being convenient and travel friendly

my first thought: "That's such a Chinese reaction."
(I definitely see it in other reactions too, but so often it is 1-2 words of Mandarin from a white person and immediately, "Your Chinese is sooo good!" Like, respectfully, you haven't heard enough to make that judgement... lol)
Speak at most 5 sentences with anyone in your native language, and you will be able to say if they speak your language well with a high degree of certainty.
You seriously underestimate how sensitive humans are to small nuances when it comes to language. Be it accent, choice of words or slighly wrong grammar
i made a chinese friend on vrchat and all i said was hello and thank you and theyre like "wow your chinese so good". pretty funny.
