Am i the only one that always felt as if the first season and most of the second season was just the set up? It set up the characters and the world and gave us some easy to hate villains with Gauron and the insane Doctor, but the real story starts when the real villain enters the show and Chidori starts using her own brain. That arc alone is nearly worth the watch and feels like the start to the real story in the world we got accustomed to by all that came before.

In some ways yes. Invisible Victory pretty much showed exactly what this series was capable of in terms of action and drama.

Great review. This is one of my favorite series. Not because it is great, but I just loved it so much. Full metal panic sigma explains a lot of the issues you had with the show. Unfortunately you have to read it :( I'm glad I did though.

+Nick B Well for now the novels and Sigma are the only way to know the rest of the story, but the new anime is also confirmed to cover the remaining content. And having read it, yes, just about everything is explained more in depth further into the story.

The funniest thing is that the ARX7 Arbalest's on-board AI claims to have a better sense of humour than Sagara, and Sagara agrees!

I have to give this one another shot. I was really put off by the high school stuff back in the day since it was already such a tired trope.

It is so annoying that when kaname and souske have a moment alone, it's always interrupted by her stupid highschool friends. Especially season 2 on the last episode.

Great reviewI agree that the original isn't as strong as the sequel, heck I think I'm way more harsh on season 1, considering there were times where the first season flat out bored me. Season 2 is one of my favorite anime though, also I thought the villains were really entertaining, well specifically Gates and the main bad guy from season 1 Great review

I could agree with that, but I still liked it because of the comedy they had in S1. They completely removed the comedy essentially from S3 and S4 almost 100%. Invisible Victory was straight up action from the very start. So many intense moments. Im sure this were to be re-rated with this series including IV then it easily would be an S.

+Grex it's weird how talent sometimes gets unnoticed on UA-cam. You're a lot more analytical than most others that are at least semi-popular. I appreciate channels that have good editing, great content and a nice voice over.

Also you are crazy for rating it a B when you rate "The World God Only Knows" as an A. Wtf is wrong with you? Same voice actors as main characters too. This should have helped give it a higher rating as well seeing as they are both amazing voice actors for the dub.

Is it safe for me to drop this. I’m 3 episodes deep and I’m not having a good time. Straight face the entire time. I highly doubt this is the hidden gem that people hype it up to be. Maybe these fans just have trash taste. Full Metal Alchemist is my favorite anime. So this show intrigued me, unfortunately the show so far has been shit.

late response here, so no hard feelings if it get's ignored.
It's safe to skip the first season, and instead read/watch a summary or recap of it. Basically you just need to know who the characters are and what their purpose is.
The second season "Full metal panic Fumoffu" is S tier level comedy. Highly recommend it to watch with friends or on your own if you are in the mood.
The third season "The Second Raid" is Heavily focused on drama and maintains a healthy amount of comedy bits up to a certain point.
It has some world building and lore in it, but it is mostly a character driven story which is dependend on their motivations.
I think the appeal of the 2nd season is the darker themed atmosphere, it's characters and military aesthetics.
There is a huge problem though, imo episode 1-12 is absolute worth it but the final episode will disappoint beyond any expectations and that's why i recommend 1 of the 2: Ignore the show or, treat episode 12 as the last episode in your head and accept the fact that it ended on a cliffhanger LOL.

Full Metal Panic OR Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu.
A wacky zany attempt at spontaneous humor is what all of Full Metal Panic should have been all along!
I am gunna assume that when the concept for Full Metal Panic was presented to the producers, it was pitched with this question in mind:
'What if we took the personality, assassin training, Mecha background, the experiences of being an honored war hero and everything else that makes Heero Yui (from Gundam Wing) who he is and force him to participate in present-day high school, long term.'
Basically let's take a person with no previous social interaction, common sense or anything close to a normal upbringing and force that person to deal with all the ups and downs and normalities of regular life, while going to high school in Japan. Bullies, drugs, perverts, sex, weird students, dating, Neets, girl problems, love letters, condoms, rivals and overly enthusiastic teachers who take things way too seriously and make that into a show, wherein an obvious Heero Yui clone has to protect an out-spoken, strong-minded, to-the-point, anti-stereotypical Japanese female lead from dangers that will will never arise (and should never have existed).
That is Full Metal Panic in a nut-shell...
However, when we look at what got produced within the first two shows (Full Metal Panic and Full Metal Panic: Invisible Victory), the anime's content and story arc resemble the disorganized, nonsensical, canonical babbling of verbal diarrhea sputtering from a two year with a mouth full of oatmeal.
    Case in point:
The mecha scenes don't do have to do with the rest of material.
When we place the mecha/war scenes side by side with all the other material, the mecha/war scenes are at a starch contrast with the comedy, romance and dramedy that make up the rest of the two shows (Full Metal Panic and Full Metal Panic: Invisible Victory). There's hardly any reference to the mecha/war scenes after they have been completed as if these action scenes never existed to begin with. Were they just a dream or an hallucination brought on by the PSD of this very obvious Heero Yui clone??
I would not be surprised if the two sets of material were directed and storyboarded by two separate groups of people, who never previously planned to work together on a project and then ran into each while hurrying into an elevator.
Seriously, did two separate sets of material get tossed on the floor and randomly mixed together?
Perhaps the mecha scenes were never originally planned and were thrown in post haste, after the fact, by someone who really wanted them included despite the fact that the director doesn't even have the sensibilities of someone with any previous experience directing realistic mechanical action scenes or even serious, dramatic war material to begin with.
I can only imagine that these action scenes got thrown in because (after the show got pitched) someone didn't like the fact that the show's premise seems to be making fun of war heroes or making fun of the Mecha genre and thus forced the hand of it's creators to include this wannabe Mecha trash and try really hard to emphasize that their obvious Heero Yui clone really is an outstanding, goodie-goodie hero worthy of his title and honor in order to satisfy someone's sensitive ego and hurt feelings.
We could say that Full Metal Panic is not a mecha show. It's a wannabe hack. A failed attempt.
Or we could say that Full Metal Panic was never meant to be a mecha show.
We could say that Full Metal Panic is a show with a misplaced identity.
Just because you have a mecha in a film or manga, does not make that film or manga mecha-genred or action genred. It could just as easily be comedy, horror, or just a bad joke with nothing to do with mecha/sci-fi or war.
Just because you have a scary character in a film or manga, does not make that film or manga a horror. It could still be an action or drama sequence. Or even a comedy.
Just because you have a character who is an honored war veteran in a film or manga, does not make that film or mange become a war story. It could still be a comedy, a tragedy, or some completely offbeat, rando Saturday morning cartoon.
However, we can say, with at least some certainty, that Full Metal Panic is a dramedy and school-life, tongue-in-cheek, romance comedy.
If you want good comedy, watch Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu.
If you want good mecha, don't watch Full Metal Panic. Watch something else.
