  • Full Metal Panic! is a masterpiece, but I already used that title for my last video on it. Here I look at Invisible Victory and beyond, wherein the characters navigate philosophy, religion and ethics in order to derive meaning from their experiences.

If this video seems familiar, you’re not going mad-it’s because it’s adapted from my old 75 minute one on the whole series I posted nearly a year ago which is now unlisted. I’ve made a project of redoing that endeavour for a few reasons-but after reading and watching the series through a few more times, I’ve also reconsidered and/or expanded on many of the points I initially made, so I hope you’ll give this new video a chance! Enjoy!
P.S. Check out my AMV for the series here: ua-cam.com/video/0KRu-sUVShw/v-deo.html

I ship these two. They love each other for the right reasons. Sosuke has a sense of duty and purpose with chidori. Chidori sees the kind heart inside sosuke and has a sense of duty to watch over take care of sosuke even when he flawed by doing crazy stuff

Its been years but i wanna say that this video concluded what i wanted to hear about the series. A series that not a lot of people talk about. The biblical references give that extra emotional part to the story. A written masterpiece that depicts flaws in its world and ours.

after watching your video, I had to rewatch some FMP videos, and one thing stood out,
Invicible Victory really shown the hard reality of war, the collateral damage (wounded civilians and deaths) is shown unlike the other series
Sousuke also shown to be completely ignoring collateral damage in Tokyo and of course, dragging Nami and her crew causing Nami's death and her crew near death, completely changing his heroic super soldier looks into a more grounded normal soldier.
I have more appreciation to Invicible Victory and Nami's arc now...

When I saw that you made this video, I resolved to finally read the manga chapters that take place after Invisible Victory (I had always hoped they would get adapted into a 5th season). This was a brilliant examination of a series that deserves way more respect. I’m so glad that someone else recognizes Full Metal Panic as the masterpiece that it is. I really hope you get more recognition as a content creator; your video essays are so insightful and thought provoking.

I just finished the so far last season and startet to rewatch the first.
I have loved it back when it came out.
I have found a lot of other stories and media and through my time as a tabletop GM have "writen" down some more.
But this series hits a lot of the absolute right notes and how it does it is amazing on a level so seldom seen.
This is an amazing video for an amazing show, I love how you don't read just way to much into things and get to the conclusion in the end.
I have to read the novels at some time when life permits.

@@_bess i even re-read the final two chapters of Sigma after watching this. i felt Sousuke's desire to just go back home to his school and Kaname. man, to go through that same situation must hurt so much that a battle hardened guy like him would cry so much. the rescue though, made me laugh out loud, since we're talking about Sgt Idiot here being held prisoner in a US Airbasr in Okinawa. Bel was right, he should've stayed in the hospital.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
i mean, did they really think a boy in love will just stay put in one place to await rescue?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
even Al joined in tgeir shenanigans, saying he wants a Trans-Am for a new body.lol!#smartass
all in all, Sousuke and Kaname's love triumphed in the end. i only wished Gatoh would write an after story for those two and their classmates.

As one who read fan translations of the novels and own all the US release versions, I feel it is a crying shame that more of the western audience may never see the story come to its beautifully written conclusion. Absolutely fantastically articulated.

From an old-head, this was one of the first anime I watched, and had access to, pre-streaming era, and I loved it. I have gone back to it over the years, and it still holds up. Although one thing that hasn't changed over the years that I think would have made for a better series, would be, remove the special mechs and whispered, it felt silly when I watched the first series as a kid, and it feels silly still, what draws you into the series is the characters, hence why FMP has a ton of non-mecha fans. The most entertaining fights, I think, were the old-mech battles, the designs were clunky but fun. They could have had a bunch of other reasons for protecting the heroine and still have largely the same plot unfold.

YOU SON OF A BESS I'VE GOT SHIT TO DO
I PULLED THREE ALL NIGHTERS IN A ROW TO BING WATCH THIS MASTERPIECE
AND IT STARTED WITH A FUCKING MEME
I literally saw Sousuke in hazma suit meme, reverse searched, found this anime and after reading the descritpions, I thought:
"I have to work. But it sounds cool, more or less. Maybe I'll find "realistic" gunfights in an anime for once"
Three all nighters later, I watched 1st season, Second Raid, Invisible Victory and STILL didn't find the meme scene
Then watched Fumofu today and IT WAS IN THE LAST EPISODE
Anyway, now I don't want to let go of it and thought... "I've already done the same with SAO. Cool anime > wow, there's more to it > [devoured by light novels]
And NOW YOU TELL ME KURZ AND MAO SLEEP WITH EACH OTEHR IN LNs? AND I'M SUPPOSED TO JUST NOT READ IT

I think the best way to approach this Anime is by watching Fumoffu at first. It looks really good, even for todays standards and you don't need first Season to get the story. I've watched the Top 20 Comedy Animes and Fumoffu easily can compete in the Top5. For me its the funniest Anime that ever existed. Through Fumoffu you build up a connection to the characters and then you can enjoy the first Season much more. And if you then watch TSR with its dark tone and Fumoffu-Level Quality it really hits hard. The fourth season was ok but for me disappointing. I was hoping for the 4th season to be made by Kyoto Animation, they just nailed it but as i said i think its ok as weaker season that does not break the franchise.

I... I'm not gonna lie, I really didn't like IV. Mainly because it just kinda... forgot what it was doing for a while? Like, the arena fights were great and all, but they really did feel out of place, like "Hey, all your friends are probably dead, everything you've ever loved just got blown the hell away as far as you know, and now you're... gonna go hang out and fight robots in a somewhat overly conspicuous way. It felt like a shoehorned way to introduce a side character that we promptly lost for cheap emotional draw, and between that and the just... awful... animation that Xebec applied to the series in many places, it just felt like the series was rushed just to fill out a punchcard and maybe sell some new models, but ultimately lacked the heart that prior series' had put into them. Even in its own series, it couldn't keep a tone, and felt very much like it was suffering from End of Evangelion syndrome, where they just kind of blew their budget early and ran out of oomph by the end. We got some genuine nailbiting action and powerful moments in the first few episodes, and then towards the end, it all felt a bit too... squishy? Like, none of the fights felt like they had any Impact to them?
    Let's compare two scenes.
In Full Metal Panic, episode 9, Sousuke gives a pair of earrings to Chidori that act as a flashbang. We get see not them going off, but the effect that they have. How they drastically change the light level, like the "Camera" of the scene is trying to adjust to the massive shift created. Even this arguably tiny effect feels big, impactful, and powerful.
Now, in the final episode of Invisible Victory, the Levaetin is fighting off all of the arm slaves on its own(We'll ignore that being a little silly for now, it worked in TSR, but I don't think it worked here). The scene direction, for starts, is just... awful. But even then, every strike feels small, every blast feels miniscule. The use of the Lambda Driver in that first hit from the Codarl feels like it's not even there, it's not affecting its surroundings at all like previous uses did(in TSR, we FELT the power being employed. They were literally breaking physics, so of COURSE it was gonna do things to the surrounding environment. Powerful winds, etc). From there, we get two other codarls running at it, swinging knives... and no lambda driver effects, even though all three suits have them and would definitely be using them. The CG again feels very clearly out of place, but that's not the worst part, nor is the terrible, terrible "Center-frame" directing of the scene. We cut in on the fight and the secondary arms just... haphazardly throw a pair of bombs at both codarls that feel like they barely do anything at all. No impact, no real feeling of anything actually happening. Freezing frame as the Levaetin swings at the first codarl, the CG clips THROUGH itself... And then as they both explode, again, there's no real impact in the scene around them, they're just background stock explosion effects that feel like they're way too far away to make sense in the scene placement... and we see them right-of-frame with a whole bunch of unused negative space otherwise that makes the incoming explosion from the artillery fire just a little TOO predictable, so again, there's no weight to it. Which just gets worse with the next use of the Lambda driver system involving the Behemoth that... freezes rocks in the air? And is also weirdly small? I mean, I get that they're trying to say Behemoth Big, but somehow they made it look smaller than it actually is? Two knives to the eyes(which there are only two of now, for some reason) and it just... stops moving. We then see the Lambda Driver activate again as Sagara shoots twice at another behemoth, causing... sparkles.... in what looks like a bad stock Aftereffects effect, followed by teensy weensy little fart clouds with orange in them. Oh wait, those are supposed to be explosions. What the actual hell. Then we get the Demolition Gun, which looks like a scene cut right out of a Playstation game, a cutscene from a Super Robot Wars game or something(I expect to see Sagara's face appear in an insert at the bottom of the screen with dialogue), big epic firing pose... and then the Arbalest breaks pose to get into ANOTHER pose to fire. Big boom, big shot, we FINALLY see a semi-but-not-really-good Lambda Driver effect as it strikes the Behemoth's shield and goes through, the explosion happens in FRONT of the behemoth and affects nothing in the back at all where it hit, and scene. It's... It's just so bad. From start to finish, it's bad.
I get why KyoAni couldn't take over IV. For obvious reasons, with what happened, that was never gonna happen. But Xebec just... they dropped the ball SO much. They even reused animation rigging from the Standard Definition Full Metal Panic first episode, having the Falke do the exact same Hind-throw that Sagara did, complete with the same crash landing. It's just... bad. And couple that with the amount of times Sagara just... didn't have a neck for some reason...
I wanted IV to be good. I loved all of the other series'(even though the animation direction in the first series got a WEE bit wonky sometimes). But it just... It shat itself. And it makes me sad that it shat itself. In scenes where it should have had me sad, it had me annoyed. In scenes where it should have had me pumped, it had me laughing. And in scenes where it tried to be touching, it just felt... forced.
So as far as I see it, Full Metal Panic ended with the last episode of TSR, whereas Invisible Victory was just fanfiction.

    • @TacComControl
      @TacComControl 2 роки тому

@@mayaha200 It was both rushed AND slow, like... there were whole-ass episodes of basically nothing happening, or side-plots that didn't really matter, all while the big bad does... nothing? with the captured Chidori? Just... plays house with her, I guess? And then the end was such a stupid ass-pull and a complete miss that it just wasn't worth it.

    • @mayaha200
      @mayaha200 2 роки тому

@@TacComControl yeas. The start episodes were ok (felt very ooc to me but whatever), but after that it felt like a season of a filler. and I'm one of the few people, I guess, That didn't care or have the time to really feel anything to Nami character. and then she died, and I didn't feel anything at all.
I only roll my eyes when she died, what is not supposed to happen! I suppose to feel shocked or sad or something when a character dies, yet I didn't.
it was rushed yet boring in a way cause again it felt like a filler and not the plot moving. The moment it felt like a filler, of course it will feel it does not matter.
the yet Chidori is still kidnapped despite all Sousuke doing in the end AGAIN arghhhhhh!! I wanted to pull my hair out from anger!
good job Sousuke, maybe if he didn't fuck around so much =.= and I really don't want to hate Sousuke, it the series fault, but it is still annoying. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it's not this filler season. I can live without it.

Its better to read Full Metal Panic Sigma. Its the continuation of TSR. I didn't really trust IV at first because of the community states that the anime adaptation has cut and alter a lot of stuff. In Sigma, it stays faithful to the novels. Theres only a few things that were not explained or expanded on but it is still the best experience to read after finishing TSR. After reading Sigma, FMP as a whole (along with Fumoffu) is one of my top 10 favorite animes of all time.
