Okay looking back at this I made some dumb mistakes but most importantly figured out what was going on with the "buy claim." That duchy was converted to the Waldensian Heresy and thus the pope has no jurisdiction. Also holy war may not have been an option due to lack of adjacent territory. That may be an option next episode though!
