The reason Mali got land off of you was because one of your vassals (who, fun fact, was the dynasty of your first character’s friend) used a subjugation casus belli against Mali. So they became the new king, and since a king cannot be a vassal of a king, they became independent from your realm and took their original holdings with them
This whole subjugation causus belli is a bit insane in my opinion. I had a small count under me who subjugated an entire kingdom somehow! But fortunately I was a emperor so he still remained my vassal.

Did Mother of us All this morning after feudalazing and uniting Africa. Whatever you do grab all three Mali's gold mines (including the one in the temple) and stablish your capital there as well for extra development, also you might want to go with a Warmonger faith.

@@AxHost I feudalized after becoming an empress, getting a reserve of money that I could later invest in buildings and getting the mines (which work in tribal) . You should be careful with succession , heresys, vassals that revert back to their old faith after being overthrown (specially if you go for righteous) and grab false conversions and medicant preachers .

For anyone doing Africa Campaigns, get the Dutchy of Manding first. That area has 2 gold mines, and that alone can carry you through all of western Africa. Going into mid game, getting Timbukto and the university there is another great county to get. Getting a foarder or desert warrior commander is also very important when moving north through Africa. Supply limits in the mid game are brutal
So really the best strategy for this is to speedrun the Kingdom with one character, and if you can manage it, the Empire, but that might be difficult depending on RNG, so it can be safer to just leave the Empire to the second succession and avoid splintering. Once you have an Empire, you can speedrun reforming and feudalizing since you really want to be off of confederate partition once you are an empire. This is not so much for you more than it is for anyone reading the comments and wants to attempt this. And speaking of, people have already said this, but really if you are going for this on your own, play as the special Hausa countess and get Mother of Us All while you are going to the trouble of uniting Africa, you might as well get an achievement for your efforts. Her start is not perfect, but with the alliance with your husband and her skill at diplomacy allowing for easier vassalage and MAA generation, forming the Kingdom is essentially guaranteed, and even the Empire of Kanem-Bornu is fairly doable in her lifetime even with meh RNG. One downside is that if you go for the RP of female-dominated game and reformation, the AI is still very bad at matrilineal marriages, at least it was back when I did this, so you might land a bunch of spare daughters in the hopes of keeping Kingdoms under your empire as dynastic-only (the best strategy now that RC has enabled renown gain from vassal king-tier dynasts again) but they might just lose the dynasty after 2-3 successions because they didn't prioritize dynastic succession.
My first ever playthrough in west Africa was with the following goal,,as a kingdom/empire tier realm,feudalize",the first half of the campaign was really fun,reforming the faith and so on,but then the latter part was just waiting 5 generations to get all the cultural inovations needed

By choosing cultures with innovations you lack, you can jump ahead in technology pretty fast if you're starting at a deficit. What I did was hybridize with I think the Egyptians, which got me four or five innovations 'for free'.
Always have a physician....will save you losing knights in your wars! Also worth getting an Antiquarian, and paying 100 gold to create basic items. Can help with prestige/prowess.
The new random death events make uniting Africa much more difficult. Sometimes the game will insist on killing your character and there is little you can do.

I played in Pagan had my 40-year-old kill duke die to smallpox right 1 county away from being a kingdom. It was a fun battle royal amongst 7 toddlers for the scraps and managing to rebuild to a king.
To manage succession better, if you stick with the African faith you started with and end up reforming it, grab monasticism. It’s such an OP tool for managing succession before primogeniture can be unlocked.

I've done this challenge a couple times and you'll find that getting light calvary is actually a little more beneficial because most of your opponents will also have bush hunters. You won't be low on prestige at any point, so having men at arms that counter the men at arms of just about every NPC faction can be really beneficial for when you're significantly outnumbered.
"Mother of us all" was difficul and i learn a lot while doing this achivement. But "Lingual franca" where you have to conquer the World it's just stupide and boring
@@SuperSteden I didn't actually conquer the whole world for Lingua Franca. I started as Charles the Bald in 867 and conquered most of the Western Map, and luckily the Indian and Mongolian courts decided that my Empire was prestigious enough so they changed their court language to French

Drylands and floodplains are very economic, the Empire of Kanem-Bornu is very sustainable and has all the holy sites that you need. That, or just start as Nubia and have an infinite money glitch.

I attempted mother of all once, where I literally got about 3 wars away from success and I accidentally had a son (who I’d accidentally had married into someone else’s family) inherit, and since I’d used his daughters for alliances (again by accident) I unintentionally ended the family. So many hours, so many freaking kids that I’d stopped caring 😢
Maybe, but you could have the kings under you deal with peasant wars and your Kings might invade other kingdoms for you. Also you have less vassals to deal with.
Yeah! i think what ill do is hopefully do a decent amount of expansion each life, then once i die, give out some kingdoms and grant vassals to them, so i have few vassals hopefully making them easier to manage, but ofc if they revolt im in big trouble haha

Just simply being a smart steward, building my riches, expanding and taking petty kingdoms and expanding my levies. 100+ opinion with the king, waited until he died to press my claim on the throne easily took it, and no one even revolted because I had spent the entire 20 years making friends. He’s now 72 years old and is in three different wars. The ANBU clan is going to fall.
I tried to get the Hohenzollern count to Prussia the other day. Went down the fertility tree cos I figured the dynasty should be expansive from the progenitor. Had 4 daughters, then a son who died of smallpox before he was 1, then 3 more daughters, then finally a son who ascended to the duchy at age 5 when I died at age 70. Fucking ridiculous.
CK3 Idea: Start as an Anglo-Saxon Catholic ruler in West Africa. Rule is you and your kids can only marry other Anglo saxons, plus all your vassels have to be anglo saxons too. If you survive to an empire level, then I'll be very surprised. I managed to become a king till all my neighbours jumped on me in a holy war.
Funnily, the first empire I ever created was the Empire of Kanem-Bornu and proceeded to mess around conquering European duchies and taking European men as concubines as an African empress. Haha. I proceeded to make the Empire of Africa while I was at it.

This can be made to go faster by intentionally hybridizing with other cultures, but... in general it does tend to be very slow.

I found that I can turn that off in the Game Rules (changing the setting to "safe"), and it doesn't break achievements or ironman.

It was changed in the 1.7 release, IIRC.
You can attack multiple weak counties at once. Easy way to take land faster, without having to disband over and over

Yeah. he can't get that achievement. You have to start as Daurama Daura to get it.
I heard when being an Emperor its best not to have kingdoms just dukes. Kingdoms become powerful where as Dukes not nearly as much
