My homie Paul who passed away gave me shit about listening to this song around the camp fire at my cabin in Minnesota and I told him to fuck off. I miss that man so much and this reminds me of him every time. Thanks Richard James
Ok little story, I made this exact comment about the high pitched whistles on the soundcloud page for this track and Richard responded with " well spotted". It was super casual and it felt cool to have this little interaction with a modern day great... edit: screenshot for posterity's sake: imgur.com/a/T1uqbnR
If there is an after life and it's filled with Aphex Twin's ambient music, that wont be too bad. I'd choose floating in a sea of nothingness dreaming to his music, over oblivion or a repeat of things as they were.
Like arriving back to your home planet, only to find that nothing remains. Like arriving home after a long journey and finding that your home - your town - has been ransacked, burned and long ago abandoned. Like being the only surviving member of your species. This isn't heaven - this is like arriving at the afterlife, and having it dawn upon you, that something terrible has happened and no one is home. You walk through the gates, only to witness the ancient demise of a once flourishing civilisation. Like breaching the hull of a wandering space craft, only to find that everyone has mysteriously disappeared or turned to dust eons ago. This song is total loss and total isolation. Bleak, hopeless and alone. This song is looking forward to the warmth of human connection and community, only to find that you're the only one left. It is the sound of hope and yearning, turning into total hopelessness and an eternity of solitude
+Black Star It just feels like returning to your home planet to me - but you've been gone a very long time, and although it looks much the same, you're not sure how the rest of your species has changed.
Such a powerful piece of music here...it pulls at your heart strings that's for sure...it makes me think of a very special person who I have loved dearly since I was born but,is no longer with me...r.i.p mum xxxx
This is the best of all of the calx songs I know. I really think Richard is a genius, just look at his ambient music. Some of my favorite songs of the sort, Rhubarb. Cliffs or Xtal, have so much depth and i could listen to the music multiple times before it becomes stale.
@@WhirlwindDrums ordering the calx tracks is hard for me- it just depends on my mood. if i really had to, i'd probably say yellow, red, blue, then green. but like you said, they're all amazing. ranking them is basically arbitrary.
Well, in my case the Calx series goes likes this 1. Blue - I love the emptiness but chaotic atmosphere 2. Green - It's so fucking weird and cool at the same time 3. Red - Idk how to describe the feeling, but it gives me hope 4. Yellow - I sincerely don't like it, very generic from Richard
I love this feeling of being underwater, half-floating, and slow-moving - it sort of disconnects me from everything and brings me peace. And that's what I think of when I listen to this track.
Few will see this But: the sound engineering is so well done on this he made it sound like the clock sound is ticking above your head (or on the wall in a small room in front of you - but always above you) when you listen to it with spatial audio enabled. I recommend the experience if your earphones have that feature. Really special and chilling feeling.

When I listened to it for the first time, I was like - wow... this is wonderful.

i find it interesting how people find this track either very calm or really depressing and melancholic... i'm definitely in the first category tho. To me, for example, it conjures a hazy memory of christmas eve from early childhood, some kind of warm family moment of complete innocence and safety. I can't even bring myself to imagine hearing this track as depressing or desolate, unlike say with rhubarb, which is definitely ultra bittersweet :V
When I'm in a more sensitive state, this track almost always makes me cry, like really cry. Indeed it's interesting how different people get affected differently by the same piece.
I hold the open wound my chest, like a grail I've sworn its secret walking the barren road aimlessly though I'll be returning to whichever Kingdom presided there before. As if the blood does summon me and my loss of present hereness knows no sound-but trumpets pumping the reverberations the ether, where others gather plucking their muted harps with scathed nails in the wingless hole of lost peoples, their colorless chorus, singing with lids closed- I am, returning. I am coming Home. I'll miss the stars and their salutations from each their silent stations, they wave me goodbye now. Goodbye then. The cold and wintry nightly air I'll miss you too; Goodbye now. I breathe you in one last time through not the nose but mouth so that I may cry out the first And I cry as like my mother-the same shake, the same undulating cadence the breath, with the eyes of my Father, I am coming home for good. Like the babe I was and always am I will cry along and loudly without knowing entirely the reasons why.
