There are socialist values that should be adhered to such as education, health, pensions and welfare, for those who cannot provide for themselves, but the money for these benefits has to come from private enterprise. Free market capitalism, albeit controlled to prevent monopolisation, seems to have a proven track record. No system is perfect but that should be the aim. Perhaps we should be teaching children the importance of helping eachother, respect, manners and morals. These seem to be working very well in places like Japan. Creativity should be encouraged but not at the expense of society as a whole. The emphasis should be balanced between the individual and the community, knowing their responsibilities, as well as their rights. I too am neither a socialist nor a fascist.

The ‘temptation’ for socialism stems from the realization that the problems of our societies are caused by something fundamental, and therefore need a fundamental change. "Poverty" in the US is a number that keeps going up every few years. Absolute poverty even poor people in the USA aren't even close to. And it's disappearing off the world. World poverty is measured by the US dollar, but the amount is different for every country. Again absolute poverty is the static amount. And inequality is an aspect you'll find in ANY civilization. Check out the percentage of rich vs poor in the former USSR, Venezuela, and North Korea. The levels of inequality are FAR worse than the US. There's been zero proof that any sort of socialist policies stop inequality. The long term data seems to indicate it's still there and people have a much harder time moving between ends of the spectrum. There isn't even any evidence that capitalism causes inequality at any rate more than anything else. Inequality happens in nature all the time. Capitalism at least allows people far better freedom to move between levels. Or the best freedom we know yet. It's also the thing that created the middle class in the first place. (Completely contrary to Marx's predictions.)

In the USSR people worked their fingers to the bone but all that hard work was squandered by the hideously inefficient Soviet economic system that, as I said above, selected party hacks over more competent candidates as the USSR favored loyalty over competence.
there would be much less work neccessary as employment would be shared more fairly and AI could be embraced rather than seen as a potential for sprawling inequality and mass unemployment, furthermore the incentive to work is for yourself and the community. It was very, very simplistic. Presenting the positive results of capitalism as owning a dishwasher and a car, pretending that capitalism channels people's greed for the good of the community, that's just denying history. The only reason why it works more or less like that is because socialists have put pressure on capitalists in order to acquire more social equality, it is not at all contained in capitalism itself.

I thought the best line was when he asked one of the audience members, who had mentioned education and work, where does he think he would find it? North Korea or South Korea? Brilliant! Socialism “sounds good” but I’ve noticed none of these people ever move to socialist countries and at the same time, people are trying to leave socialist countries as fast as humanly possible.
Every single city in North Korea was at least 50% destroyed following the (illegal) US invasion, with the major cities such as the capital destroyed over 90%. Since then, North Korea has been crippled by economic sanctions and military aggression on its border by the United States, which not only massacred civillians during the war and bombed non-military targets to starve North Koreans, but routinely perform military drills along the border in order to interfere with North Korean agriculture by pressuring conscription. This is setting aside the fact the north was already decimated during the Japanese occupation. South Korea, by contrast, has had consistent peaceful economic development while receiving support from the United States and other countries without the aforementioned sanctions. A better question would be whether one would prefer to be educated in poverty-stricken capitalist Mexico or in communist China. Or even better, would one prefer to be educated in pre-communist American-backed dictatorship Cuba with the overwhelming majority living in abject poverty, or post-socialist Cuba with universal literacy, more doctors per capita than any other country in the world, no homelessness etc etc.

@@rapisode1 They do indeed improve living standards... for a time. They can survive for a while off the fading embers of leftover innovation, just like buzzards can live for a while off of a corpse. And then they stagnate. For example, if there's no profit to be had from developing new drugs and medical procedures, there's much less drive to create them. Incidentally, I just realized the real motivation behind all the trans-gender support from the left: lots of unnecessary procedures, drugs, and such draining profits from insurance companies, thus forcing rate hikes, making socialized medicine look even better. that's a great argument if the examples of socialism put in place have, in most cases, collapsed either by their own fault or because they were mined from the exterior. it's a great argument if you want to be deceitful. if you don't, and you recognise that the base theory is a good one, then your goal would be to find a way to put it in practice so that the theory does not degenerate once it touches reality. that's what the goal of a great politician should be.

Putting it in practice does not work because once you start taking more from those who earn more (because they have worked hard and smart) and giving more to those who work less or not at all, those who make more will start making less because the effort they used to put won't be worth it anymore, and that's why socialism will never work. Utopias are fantasies, and socialism is based on a fantasy because it doesn't take into consideration human nature. Capitalism is the way, because you either go right or go wrong and destroy countries and lives.

There are socialist values that should be adhered to such as education, health, pensions and welfare, for those who cannot provide for themselves, but the money for these benefits has to come from private enterprise. Free market capitalism, albeit controlled to prevent monopolisation, seems to have a proven track record. No system is perfect but that should be the aim. Perhaps we should be teaching children the importance of helping eachother, respect, manners and morals. These seem to be working very well in places like Japan. Creativity should be encouraged but not at the expense of society as a whole. The emphasis should be balanced between the individual and the community, knowing their responsibilities, as well as their rights. I too am neither a socialist nor a fascist.

To call Bolivia a socialist success is to only tell half the story and ignore the fact that the success of Bolivia came from capitalist efforts to (at least partially) deregulate and decentralize it's economy.

"Poverty" in the US is a number that keeps going up every few years. Absolute poverty even poor people in the USA aren't even close to. And it's disappearing off the world. World poverty is measured by the US dollar, but the amount is different for every country. Again absolute poverty is the static amount.
And inequality is an aspect you'll find in ANY civilization. Check out the percentage of rich vs poor in the former USSR, Venezuela, and North Korea. The levels of inequality are FAR worse than the US.
There's been zero proof that any sort of socialist policies stop inequality. The long term data seems to indicate it's still there and people have a much harder time moving between ends of the spectrum.
There isn't even any evidence that capitalism causes inequality at any rate more than anything else. Inequality happens in nature all the time. Capitalism at least allows people far better freedom to move between levels. Or the best freedom we know yet. It's also the thing that created the middle class in the first place. (Completely contrary to Marx's predictions.)

there would be much less work neccessary as employment would be shared more fairly and AI could be embraced rather than seen as a potential for sprawling inequality and mass unemployment, furthermore the incentive to work is for yourself and the community. Presenting the positive results of capitalism as owning a dishwasher and a car, pretending that capitalism channels people's greed for the good of the community, that's just denying history. The only reason why it works more or less like that is because socialists have put pressure on capitalists in order to acquire more social equality, it is not at all contained in capitalism itself.

I thought the best line was when he asked one of the audience members, who had mentioned education and work, where does he think he would find it? North Korea or South Korea? Brilliant! Socialism “sounds good” but I’ve noticed none of these people ever move to socialist countries and at the same time, people are trying to leave socialist countries as fast as humanly possible.
Everyone needs to point to these two countries as the shining example of two peoples identical in every way expect their political ideology.
Every single city in North Korea was at least 50% destroyed following the (illegal) US invasion, with the major cities such as the capital destroyed over 90%. Since then, North Korea has been crippled by economic sanctions and military aggression on its border by the United States, which not only massacred civillians during the war and bombed non-military targets to starve North Koreans, but routinely perform military drills along the border in order to interfere with North Korean agriculture by pressuring conscription. This is setting aside the fact the north was already decimated during the Japanese occupation. South Korea, by contrast, has had consistent peaceful economic development while receiving support from the United States and other countries without the aforementioned sanctions. A better question would be whether one would prefer to be educated in poverty-stricken capitalist Mexico or in communist China. Or even better, would one prefer to be educated in pre-communist American-backed dictatorship Cuba with the overwhelming majority living in abject poverty, or post-socialist Cuba with universal literacy, more doctors per capita than any other country in the world, no homelessness etc etc.

The argument that high taxes are comperable to stealing is dumb. This guy assumes that the wealth someone acquired legally instantly means it’s fair. False. He also gives North Korea South Korea as an example. The worst and the most blind example. Also capitalism used to work. No longer it does. Cuba would be a better example. If not the tragic US embargo Cuba would be in much better shape today. And it’s still pretty good in Cuba even today. He wants to compare “like to like”. There was a documentary on the loss done by Channel 4 news, you should go check it out. It's a pretty left-wing source so you shouldn't have any problem with its credibility.
And i don't see the point of arguing whether they had more supporters or not. If they truly had more supporters, they would be the government today. They lost, and they lost big. Boris might not be the best conservative PM, but he sure proved himself as the lesser evil compared to Corbyn.
Don’t forget it was also the split in Labour as a whole which existed before he was elected as leader, ever since New Labour really (the socialist left vs the tory loving new labour, all in the same party), plus the huge media bias against him.

@@rapisode1 They do indeed improve living standards... for a time. They can survive for a while off the fading embers of leftover innovation, just like buzzards can live for a while off of a corpse.
And then they stagnate. For example, if there's no profit to be had from developing new drugs and medical procedures, there's much less drive to create them.
Incidentally, I just realized the real motivation behind all the trans-gender support from the left: lots of unnecessary procedures, drugs, and such draining profits from insurance companies, thus forcing rate hikes, making socialized medicine look even better. Thanks for helping me make that connection!
