Edwina Currie begins by honoring Camila Batmanghelidh for the work that she does with children, following this she talks about the days when she was at Oxford and the ridiculous rules that were imposed saying that only boy was allowing in a girl room overnight as long as she paid for extra linin. Two boys were only allowing in the room at one time meaning that when her family came to visit her boyfriend had to stand outside whilst her father and brother were in the room.
She says she disagrees with feminism on two counts both cultural and practical. On the cultural side there is a part of feminism that hates men and this is disagreeable in Edwina's opinion. Also there is the theory that women should be equal to men in every way shape and form, which denigrates and diminishes the life experience and history of most women. Feminists often take the view that women who make other choices away from their own ideals of feminism are making the wrong choices. The choice between home and career is the one that comes up the most and she says her mother's generation chose home whereas her daughter's generation choose career. As a mother herself she says that the most wonderful thing a woman can do is hold her own baby in her arms.
On the practical side she says that Feminism makes victims of women always suggesting that men are constantly beating them down. When special measures are in place to promote women in the workplace quite often this sets women up to fail as the pressure on men to do this often leads to the promotion of people who are simply not good enough. The UK has had one woman Prime Minister who was not a feminist as she made her way through the system not once complaining that men hold her back and when Margaret Thatcher saw an opportunity to go into leadership she took it. The labour party had 81 female MP's and when the opportunity came to lead the party only one woman, Diane Abbott, stepped forward. Edwina conclude by saying that to all the women that you need the education, skills, single-mindedness and most of all courage to achieve what you want.

I'm a woman, and I couldn't agree with her more. I work in what is typically a male-dominated field. From the beginning, I approached my work as a competent person and the men around me treated me accordingly. If I had listened to feminists, I would have been convinced before I even tried that I was doomed to fail because patriarchy. No, my job hasn't been without a couple of incidents of sexism (by clients, not coworkers), but *everyone* faces incidents with stupid people who have stupid beliefs in their working life. But feminism turns those handful of incidents into a huge conspiracy and pretends it's because you're a woman. It's not. It's because many people are stupid, and you're not going to cure general stupidity, not with any amount of complaining of turning yourself into a victim.

Employers don't hire people who only cry and sue. If you can do the job better than a male, you bet you'll be hired instead of him. Even in muslim countries this happens, I've seen some TED talks of women who do good work and are hired even there. The biggest obstacle to the success of women is the need for change in their own mentality. You think of complaining instead of thinking of doing good work. All women I've seen who work well, none of them are complaining. Only the deadbeats are complaining.
+la cri Your statement is contradictory. If everybody would share the view of Edwina Currie the employer who would prefer men than good employees couldn't happen. In real life, they happen but also happen employers who prefer good employees than men.
Feminism amplifies those incidents when it comes to women, and Disregard them when it comes to men. That way they can make the world look like a male free for all, and a female uphill battle. Demanding that men first help women with their battle. And get to their own later. Leading to massive male suicide numbers, and a large swath of men throwing their hands up and walking away.
Truly admirable. We are the character we project outwards, confidence shows in women just like it does for men, and feeling capable and competent is what shows strength, indeed I admire women who are strong and independent but it truly means this; not the kind of person who says one thing and then does the complete opposite.
Everyone has to work hard to achieve something. I was diagnosed with a rare uncurable disease known as Chron's Syndrome, and it nearly killed me 6 times during my high-school years. Yet, in all this time I had a dream and I worked as hard as I ever could, even surpassing what I though I was capable of doing; and I managed to achieve my dream, dream of becoming a psychologist which I am currently studying to become.
And people with poor manners, haters; will always exist. Whether they hate you because they dislike something about you, or whether they are jealous. But why would they matter, they don't play a part in your life so why care? Someones opinion does not have to define your reality.
Completely agree. Although I'd argue that men more or less cop the same extent of sexism only it's taken far less seriously. As such those same stupid people won't really use that angle of derision if they know it won't really do much damage.
For where there are tangible issues that effect either men or women they sure enough need to be addressed. But doing it via victim identity politics only takes us backwards. What's more is that men get into this idea that the feminist ideology is by extension the consensus of all women. So hard do they cling to it that even reality struggles to show them otherwise.

This is the strong, independent, free thinking type of women I respect the most. I bash feminism whenever I hear it, not because I am a misogynist, a crutch argument used by most feminist, but because when I look at the women I know I see true strength and intelligence that compels my respect not demands it. First of all the context of this woman’s and mines pertains solely to western culture. While real victims of misogyny suffer, feminist here go around demanding that man close their legs on the subway, that they illegalize free speech, censorship art they don’t like, that women should get paid more for less work, that it be considered criminal for a man to even initiate a conversation with a woman, that men are automatically guilty of rape with just an accusation, the ridiculous list goes on. In the west women get preferential treatment, yet still complain that men have somehow oppressed them. They enjoy all these freedoms yet consider themselves to be as oppressed as women in the Middle East.
It is unfortunate that the men around you look at you unequally, I read Malala’s book and A thousand Splendid Suns, and though the second is fiction I believe it to have significant insight into how women are treated in certain areas of the Middle East. I also read a lot of articles about this issue as well. It is this specific reason why I find feminism in the west so appalling.
The people I respect and admire the most are women, strong, intelligent, insightful women that are able to disseminate what western feminism is really about. I have never thought of smart women as monkeys who can sign-language but more of a novelty in that I do not run into many women my age that have interest that go beyond fashion, the Bravo channel, and what actors are doing, and other things along the same line.
The emulation of a man talks to the fact that women are attempting to take-up roles that use to be predominantly male. Having a baby is a choice that can impede a woman’s career, especially if she is like women in the west that refuse to date men that are less successful in their own career and therefor more likely to be primary care givers. Wiling to do this would be true emulation of the male role, not the reducto absurdum form you used.

Feminism is largely responsible for selling a career as empowerment and emancipation and hence luring women away from raising kids at home. The government clearly saw a wonderful opportunity to not only gain taxes from all these new female employees, but also the revenue from industries, such as daycare, that sprung up in support. The government has encouraged the idea that it is perfectly normal and healthy for a woman to raise a child alone with the government benefit system as the new daddy.

I work in a job where i am constantly surrounded by older and younger men. They treat me with nothing but respect. I find it so funny when women act so concerned for me thinking that i must deal with shitty men all day at work. The news and internet has made us women scared of men and made us assume all men are misogynist sexual predators. And yes there is plenty of men who are like that but it is not as common as what so many people make them out to be!!

Not the message she was giving, the message she gave was middleclass and upper class women don't need feminism because they have decent primary and secondary education as well as the money to go to the best universities. In order to truly believe in gender equality is to believe that we women are the same as men. This is why I personally don't believe in gender equality. Men and women are in fact different. Lastly of course, these extremist divide the populace. Setting ordinary, normal, poor people against each other. This is gravy for the matrix you mentioned. This is why the system supports extreme feminist and SJW view points. A confused and divided populace is easier to control and distract.
My way of unplugging from the matrix as much as possible has been to move towards more libertarian outlooks. I honestly think we need 'aggressive moderates' to force reasonable change towards a society that is not ever widening the gap between rich and poor. Even though that seems like a contradiction in terms.

I am not willing to give my life for ANY woman. This is equality. They can fend for themselves, by themselves.
It truly is a tough decision to make. It all depends how much sacrifice they have done. Sometimes some women go above and beyond to protect their child, there as father we will have to protect both. Seeing my mother going through hardship of life to raise me, of course I will do all it takes to protect her.
The society that are brought up has destroyed the importance of family and the bond, we need to fix that.
All women need to understand is that if someone is welling to die for you, obedience is the least they can offer. :)..

This speaker was a delight. I consider myself more of a first wave feminist. These ladies simply wanted equal rights, without resorting to insulting or diminishing men, and without discouraging motherhood, which is one of the most unique and powerful attributes women have. Congratulations to the speaker for recognizing this, and celebrating it, along with our ability to achieve much without a special leg up or handout. The truth is we all need one another to succeed. It's time for women and men to reclaim their partnership, and be teammates once again.

One two i am rather offended by your assumptions. i believe in equality. i am 14 and i think my vocabulary is satisfactory. i don’t victimise myself because i want to make change for future generations. it isn’t all men’s fault but the glass ceiling prevents us from excelling. not everyone has the means to get to where politicians are because of the capitalism in our society.
I was extremely impressed by Edwina Currie, she extremely quickly won my respect with her calls to reason. I've never seen a woman on the same skill level as she displayed here. Her ability and command is top notch as is her showmanship. I hope you all push her in the direction of politics, she should run for prime minister, I believe she would win by a landslide as I believe she can run circles around the politicians and we need her type of thinking and reasoning in our leadership. If she was running in my country i'd vote for her without hesitation.

One of my favorite stories about feminists was related by a secretary at a women's rights organization, where they had been having problems with their phone system. Two women showed up at the secretary's office and said they were from the phone company and were there to fix the phones. The secretary sent word to her boss that the phone techs were there and she came down and said hello to the two phone techs, then turned to her secretary and said, "Where are the phone repair guys?"

So basically a based individual is someone who is really awesome because they speak their mind, even when speaking out isn't popular or goes against a common belief. What an amazing speech. I worked in male dominated fields, literally 95% male for almost 8 years. I served in the Marine Corps, I worked in horizontal/directional drilling as a heavy equipment operator, I worked in concrete where I guarantee that I was the 1% of the 1% because in 2006 when I worked for that concrete company women were only 1% of construction in general! Yes I experienced sexism, I experienced disbelief that a woman could do this work and quite frankly the men were not wrong in questioning whether or not physically I could do the work... I barely could and only lasted 6 months in concrete. My point is this, men didn't hold me back because I did all of this by my free will and actually men propelled me forward. We have to remember something, men and women are different, my first day at my first construction company my foreman threatened to quit because I was a woman. My supervisor made the two of us work alone when we needed almost a four man crew for the job and by the end of the day he looked at me and said "you are a damn good worker" I said thank you, you gonna stop treating me like crap? After that he became my biggest advocate, almost got fired three times but that is the deal; we are not the same. In men's eyes you need to prove you can physically do the work, I was in a man's job and I did and they respected me for doing the job and not asking for help because I am a woman or trying to use my status as a woman to get a hand out. Today modern feminists kill me, never have them been in my situation, they claim male patriarchy but yet I succeeded in much harsher environments with far more negativity towards me because I am a woman. In retrospect I can look back and understand them, we are not the same, we are physically, psychologically and biologically different.

As well as women oppressing other women, and men oppressing other men, and women oppressing men and boys. I'm not British or anything but I've been following the red half of that City's football team for a large part of my life now; and one thing I've come to know about those people is that they are level-headed and not particularly pretentious(yes even the blue half ;)). They can also see right through bs and they speak their mind. This lady is no exception.

When I was younger this is what I assumed feminism was - Women collectively deciding that there was no reason that they couldn't do anything men can. I actually came across this, top of the recommended list, from the channel of an individual who identifies himself as "UNDOOMED". When I saw the name of the recommended video's poster as being "OxfordUnion" I was actually confused as to how a simple anti-Feminism UA-cam entertainer would link to an Oxford video-- there's just this sense of disconnect between the two as figures. First time I've heard Edwina Currie speak - what a charming and engaging person! I probably stand with her on these views about feminism. I'm also grateful that our society has evolved to produce greater and greater equality of opportunity over time - it's great to see our wives and daughters succeeding in so many different fields.
