Yeah, it feels like some tv shows try too much to give their titles a deeper meaning that you only understand after watching either the entire show or most of it.
You put my main reason for liking it very nicely. In most adult animated shows, you SEE a family, you HEAR them talk to each other nicely in those short-lived tender moments, but you never really FEEL like they actually care about each other. Those tender moments always get ruined by one of the characters barreling in and being a dick. The characters are always insulting each other for no reason or screwing each other over. It all feels too scripted and robotic, no matter how zany the scenario is. It's almost mind-numbing. Smiling Friends feels more like a group of employees just trying to make the most of the world they're in. It feels almost relatable, which I know is a word that gets thrown around a lot to describe the conversations in this show. I feel very engaged because I genuinely don't know what's gonna happen next, and it's such an authentic-feeling type of chaos. I've seen other people say the same, but I genuinely much prefer the types of adult animation that don't rely on just sex, drugs, cussing and violence. I don't mind that stuff, but when every single one of your punchlines is one of those things, it gets old so fast.
@kelfo4997 If he ever got like a full-fledged fleshed out cameo, would he just be in the artstyle of one of the many animated videos (i.e. RWappin and AL-AL-BA-QUER-QUE!), a Zach Hadel or Michael Cusack rendition, or just some South Park Canadian over a picture of his body?
Omg, when i watched the episode brothers egg, and heard homunculus, i got flashbacks. I was like “are they referencing what i think they are?” But shrugged it off. I didnt realize that was literally exactly what they were going for. That story lives rent-free in my head and i will never get it out.
As someone who's been watching Oneyplays for a long time 99% of the show is hypotheticals that have been previously brought up in the let's plays. It's almost like a canonization to the UA-cam stuff.
Part of why the show works so well is that it's a real, albeit exaggerated portrayal of our world that doesn't lean too much to an "everything and everyone sucks" nor the "yay the world is wonderful place! :)" narratives as shown by Charlie and Pim. They're just two funky dudes who have jobs, try to do them best they can, and hopefully help people along the way. Because, between making the world shittier or making it a bit better, Smiling Friends tells us it's worth it to try the latter-- and I think that's an amazing message for an adult show
This is just slightly related to smiling friends but i need to mention it. I was rewatching Arcane and I got to the part where Vi and Caitlyn go to the brothel, she gives up Caitlyn to some random timid girl, but then I realized that her name was PIM All I could thing during the rest of the episode was PIM saying “I love Caitlyn Charlie, I LOVE CAITLYN!”

I show I think you'd like is moral orel. It's about a kid who takes his church sermons too literally and then gets beat by his dad (who is played by baymax)
You hit the nail on the head about the positive aspect. I've never clicked with frankly a *large number* of viral shows the past few years, and largely it was because they were particularly cynical and downtrodden.
At 10:11 the homunculus videos came out waaaaay earlier than 2015. I watched them as a kid in the 2000s or the very early 2010s. You probably just looked at a reuploads upload date without actually looking into it lmao
I think the reason why this show is so good is because it seems so real. It just like how you and you friends would react to things happening but in a wacky way.
My favorite thing about the show is how it doesnt fully rely on conventional punchlines. Literally just the characters casually acknowledging their environment pastes this smile on my face i can't explain. And the way they can get so serious & real while the animation remains whimsically unhinged is such an ironic craft
Lol no I get the Gumball thing. Especially since there's that trend going around of you could put any character from any style in TAWOG and it will always work. You could probably do the same with Smiling Friends to a certain degree
my favorite thing about this show has to be the group's actual respect and love for each other, shown a lot in the season 2 finale. And just overall the real conversations they have with each other in general. It feels grounded idk lol I feel like other adult animations attempt this but never have a full episode of a real life situation ex. the last episode of season one where they're in the airport. I think the balance of real opinions and personalities in between the zaniest and wacky scenarios they're put in is just wonderful man. It really keeps you on your toes and rewatching it just gets better. This show gonna take the stoner merch throne.
My favorite ending of an episode is 'Enchanted Forrest'. It's so weird to feel happy knowing the insane series of events that led up to it. And the characters know it too, so it's just this awkward moment that just sits for a bit.
What i love about this show is that (for the most part) the characters act like a real person would in these situations, and that we just get scenes of them being regular people in such a strange chaotic world. the jokes kinda just feel like something funny your friend would say while your hanging out.
I had a dream last night where I was Pim and I went with Charlie to a restaurant and saw that they were giving a discount specifically to gay couples and I was like "Hey Charlie..." and we got in a whole argument over it
I saw a very specific post on pinterest with tons of people talking about dreams they had related to smiling friends and now I'm wondering what's so potent about this show that causes it to leak into even the unconscious parts of our brains. shit's wild
I just love this show so much because you can just, watch it at any point in time, any episode, and immediately have your mood brung up. it really does what the show is about, make people smile !
12:45 It wasnt until you and shaferillas made me realize this aspect of the show and i think thats why i love it too. As they put, no one who doesnt deserve it gets a bad ending in an episode. You dont have characters that are nice or decent or just needing help ever get punished and usually have a good ending to things. For example both the man in the first episode with the gund and the princess in the enchanted forest episode. Both characters got a decent ending even with all the chaos and violence around them or implied violence. Its refreshing to see a show thats not afraid to do over the top type of humor but also recognize when its best used and best not used. It makes the jokes and things that happen way more satisfying.
Ever since I saw the pilot I just knew the show would flourish, it’s just so good, it knows what it wants and it shows us something we’ve never seen before and that’s why it just works, I absolutely love it and I can not wait for more of it
i loved adult swim as a kid. for some reason when i was maybe 3 or 4, my dad would let me sit in his lap and watch some of it with me. so would my oldest brother (he's also the reason why i grew up with anime and 2000s youtube videos and video games like the world ends with you and kingdom hearts). now that i'm thinking about it, probably not the best way to grow up, but at least i can still say i've been there. i'm getting close to becoming an adult, only about 2 more years left. i feel like i really should watch this show when i get the chance.
10:24 this is precisely why I love this show so much. Being chronically online through Newgrounds and UA-cam, finally a show where for the most part im in on almost all the jokes. My oldest kid loved this show too (she’s 11) but I get to sit there and show her that HEY THATS CHILLS, y’know the Burger King foot lettuce! “Oh ya!!”
The best part about that Brazil episode is the whole call with the boss was improv and he (the boss’ VC) wasn’t even in the studio they just called him and he played along
14:36 For those wondering: Charile and Pim have a small discussion of the Snowman's form, he consumes a cruise ship, and then probably floods the town. (I say probably because the episode ends)
I love that the christmas and hallowean episodes were only that way because they were copying the relase schedule of thier first season. Such a silly gag but perfectly embodies zach and micheal as creators
My favorite reference of the show is Mips design in the enchanted forest episode. I rarely meet ANYONE who has seen the old rankin bass lotr and hobbit specials
I think what makes Smiling Friends awesome is the humor. It's a very optimistic and fairly wholesome show, just with a darker overtone and themes. It's like hanging with that one friend group who always makes dark jokes and rags on each other, but in the end you all love hanging out and are just having fun. That's the soul of this show. Fun.
Idk what to say about it it’s just that it has some crazy charm to it that makes it way too funny. I 100% feel that the way they talk is what makes it so much funnier since it just feels like real conversation at some times
Clearly, some people haven't watched Xavier Renegade Angel, it's (some what) like Smiling Friends, comedy wise, and creative writing, But, it executes it way better, and in terms of wholesome-ness... Joe Pera... yeah
I loved the concept of the episode where they go to Brazil and the whole thing is them awkwardly figuring out how to navigate the situation, but I absolutely hated it from a sensory standpoint. I got really overstimulated when they kept talking over each other. Overall I was blown away by the fact that was really the entire episode and how bold of a choice that was, especially since it was the last one of the season.
You'd be surprised, but Rick and Morty has actually almost dropped the absurd edgy humor from the earlier seasons. Rick tries to and succeeds at being nicer to his family, Morty gets actual character growth, Summer and Beth actually get some episodes dedicated to adventures with specifically them, etc. It's not the best, but it has certainly gotten far better. The initial Bush World pseudo-pilot is far from how the show walks and talks now, but in the first three-ish seasons it very much felt like the Bush World pseudo-pilot.
That's for the best, to be honest. It also fits Rick as a character. In the earlier seasons, he keeps repeating things like "life doesn't matter" and "love is only a chemical in your brain." Still, we do see that he loves and still misses his wife, and that he likes living, even if he doesn't admit it.
Honestly I have such a love hate relationship with this show, because no other show has ever made me so uncomfortable. Yet for some reason it's like it forced me to keep watching.
To quote a random comment I saw, what makes this show works is that it actually feels like it was written for adults and not middle schoolers like most other adult cartoons

I think the reason why this show is so good is because it seems so real. It just like how you and you friends would react to things happening but in a wacky way.
My favorite thing about the show is how it doesnt
fully rely on conventional punchlines.
Surprised you didn’t mention a like/dislike for bobs burgers considering it checks off lots of the boxes you said drew you to smiling friends
my favorite running joke is when a character points directly at the screen with a super detailed hand
If i could describe smiling friends, its like regular show for adults
it has more of a chowder vibe to me
Yeah, it's kinda like a mixture of regular show and chowder, I grew up with regular show so this show kinda makes feel like a kid again
I would say close enough is closest for obvious reasons but I get where your coming from
The casual conversation bits are my favorite gimmick it’s so funny to me
I had a dream last night where I was Pim and I went with Charlie to a restaurant and saw that they were giving a discount specifically to gay couples and I was like "Hey Charlie..." and we got in a whole argument over it
I saw a very specific post on pinterest with tons of people talking about dreams they had related to smiling friends and now I'm wondering what's so potent about this show that causes it to leak into even the unconscious parts of our brains. shit's wild
"he drops down to his knees, pleads for his life, and pisses himself."
I just love this show so much because you can just, watch it at any point in time, any episode, and immediately have your mood brung up. it really does what the show is about, make people smile !
i love how he can actually draw smiling friends characters ok, despite the whole thing being that he cant draw
Ever since I saw the pilot I just knew the show would flourish, it’s just so good, it knows what it wants and it shows us something we’ve never seen before and that’s why it just works, I absolutely love it and I can not wait for more of it
I have a stim where whenever I see my dogs around the house I wave at the with both hands and say "hello what's up hello whats up"
i loved adult swim as a kid. for some reason when i was maybe 3 or 4, my dad would let me sit in his lap and watch some of it with me. so would my oldest brother (he's also the reason why i grew up with anime and 2000s youtube videos and video games like the world ends with you and kingdom hearts). now that i'm thinking about it, probably not the best way to grow up, but at least i can still say i've been there.
i'm getting close to becoming an adult, only about 2 more years left. i feel like i really should watch this show when i get the chance.
“Oh ya!!”
You watched one Game Theory video and decided to growl every time you emphasize a word
Really good Pim impression
Fun fact: the smiling friends (besides the boss) are “critters”
the brazil episode is one of my fav episodes
"the earths flat" best line in the show
Dude, that is the best Pim AND Allan impression I've heard
My favorite joke in the series isn’t even really a joke, but it’s the fact that the party aliens apparently know what black mirror is 🤣
I like how he ads that little but if grit to his voice almost like mat pat at times. Great video
I thought when he was showing who was psychicpebbles and oney plays I thought he was going to show the “THEY HIT THE PENTAGON, THEY HIT THE PENTAGON!”
The best part about that Brazil episode is the whole call with the boss was improv and he (the boss’ VC) wasn’t even in the studio they just called him and he played along
Best quote from the show,
“Hi I’m Mr. Frog”
14:36 For those wondering:
Charile and Pim have a small discussion of the Snowman's form, he consumes a cruise ship, and then probably floods the town. (I say probably because the episode ends)
OH MY GOD FOOTOFAFERRET MADE A SMILING FRIENDS VIDEO THIS IS NOT A DRILL
“In 1991 I told myself when they start putting pig physics I’d stop playing games”
truly a charlie quote of all time
I love that the christmas and hallowean episodes were only that way because they were copying the relase schedule of thier first season. Such a silly gag but perfectly embodies zach and micheal as creators
"hi im mr footofaferret this is my show i make the video" hehehehe its 4am and this is the best thing i could think of hehehehe
Fun.
1:49 diabetes reference perchance ‼
I was looking for this comment!
I heard pancreas, looked at the comments and saw this one first
yeah no that made my day tbh
Perchance.
@@BotFisherman we need more people like you on yt. bots suck
Wait your Pim impression was super good wth lmao
Idk what to say about it it’s just that it has some crazy charm to it that makes it way too funny.
I 100% feel that the way they talk is what makes it so much funnier since it just feels like real conversation at some times
“I love kids Charlie, I LOVE KIDS!!!”
this is weirdly such a wholesome video, I did not expect that from a video about Smiling Friends
9:24
Aint no way he doesn't know who Chills is
Ever thought about making a video about Wander Over Yonder once?
you mean wander?
@@kelfo4997 fixed it!
3:57 where is my ham I put it right here?!
1:48 for anyone who doesn’t know, he’s diabetic
really random but im 13 right now, and i absolutely love this show and i am 100% sure in like 7 years im gonna love it just the same
It’s funny that the smiling friends group on Facebook are filled entirely with frowning friends type people
That alan impression was on point ;-;
Your Grrrrowling in the miiiidddle of eeeevery seeeeeentence is toooooo muuuuuch.
I think my favorite thing about smiling friends is catching gags and jokes from oneyplays on the show
You'd be surprised, but Rick and Morty has actually almost dropped the absurd edgy humor from the earlier seasons.
Fun fact: Pim shares a voice actor with Mammon from helluva boss
Honestly I have such a love hate relationship with this show, because no other show has ever made me so uncomfortable. Yet for some reason it's like it forced me to keep watching.
“I didn’t plan on making this” I swear this has been said by every UA-camr on the planet at least 12 times. Lol.
