The 'bonus tip' at the end is a big one for almost every young student, or perhaps students who like to watch tutorials as supplements between classes with their in-person teacher. The modern concave bow is a genius invention with very exact measurements and contours to almost mimic that of the many-centuries old converse bows. I can understand that instinctively students want to tighten their bow to a perfectly straight stick. Good/great teachers will 'hammer' the fact into their students that their needs to be that curve which gives the sweetness (as you said). I think a competent teacher should tell this fact to their students many times and not just in the first few lessons - (I know teachers that do this unfortunately).
Never thought about the inhale vs exhale when starting or cueing. Even in college my professor spent parts of lessons telling me to do a sharp intake when beginning. I’ll play around with that to see what happens. I do try to get my students to realize how the right hand can affect intonation, especially when they’re tuning!
Pitch flattening is a real phisic thing that happen to folks that dont understand the push and pulling thing and initiate each bow with lot of pressure down :'c Is sad because I was there for many years x'd you cant build good intonation that way because you never have a steady and instant feedback, the string takes a time to fully vibrate and get the real intonation
Really good explanations! My biggest struggle is intonation for sure. I tend to go sharp, especially on the E string. I haven’t even made it to shifting yet. I definitely need to correct the problems before I get to more difficult techniques.
Thanks for this information. I'm never quite sure if I should be using the thicker pad or the tip for vibrato. My fingers naturally default to the pad but I thought I was doing it wrong and was supposed to be on the very tip. And knowing that the pressure of the finger or the bow can make the tone sharp is really insightful. I am subscribed and will check out your other lessons.
Hi, I'm new to this channel. I looked at the " violin tutorials playlist" and I couldn't find the hole tutorial from A to Z. So do I need to watch all of the vides in the playlist?
8:20 I thought you said "playing a W.C." and I was thinking: who's that?? I falsely "remembered" the passage you played as being written by Ravel haha. Also, I'm just curious about what the stand/pole is behind you. A mic?
@@erictheviolinist now I wish I could get rid of the tension in the left side of my body neck and arm. I think I squeezed with my chin I don't know really. I do tense up my shoulder. It's definitely a problem I wish I could fix I've tried many many things.
No, sir. Not gonna mess up with my breathing. I breathe normally when playing violin. Lately I watched a YT video where a violinist took a deep inhale before playing and exhaled during playing and I could hear the exhaled breath on the mic. I just don’t want the inhale before playing to be my bad habit, that I’d forget to exhale and breathe normally again
I think the problem is inhaling once and then never exhaling, etc x'd the "adding tension" is a controversial one, because when you inhale expanding your chest you actually gain lots of posture and violin holding potential without the use of any muscle (if you inhale wrong you may add tension or something, but the "shoulders going up" is actually from the expansion of the ribcage so no tension there) So you are good, working the breathing away from the instrument and then using that breathing is the way
Thank you for your lesson and tips. Subscribed 👍
Hope it helped! Thanks for the sub and welcome to our little community!

I think it's often overlooked, but I emphasize this to create longevity in my students' playing. Thanks for watching!
My teacher just told me about the bow tightening problem. Love the reinforcement. Thanks for your tips, very helpful to me as a beginner.
Underrated piece of advice for sure!

Is your Musician’s Practice Guide no longer available? I tried to follow the link in one of your older videos but it didn’t work.
Shoot me a message on ericmrugala.com and I’ll send you a copy 🙂
Sir really I don't know..what is wrong with my violin bow..? 😢

Oh that’s just a backlight to make the background a different color haha
@@erictheviolinist Oh I see. It works nicely!
Obviously I haven't seen the alternative colour/lighting, but it looks good here!
Hello Sir I still wonder why my violin does not produce sound😢
Have you rosined your bow?
Thanks I noticed my bow too tight
Small tweaks can make a big difference!
