In the 1960's and 70's, Trans-Am racing featured two classes, based on displacement. Both classes raced on track at the same time, and went about their business in different ways. The brutish Mustangs and Camaros made times with horsepower, churning 500 ponies from their 5.0L V8's. Then, the European competitors, with engines 2.0L and under, made their times with finesse, lightness, and balance. This Alfa Romeo GTA is a proper lightweight racing special that raced in period! With a hot twin-plug head from its (recently) upsized 1750CC engine, it makes one of the more glorious sounds a race car could make.

I love all the sounds that are happening in this thing. From the over run of the engine, to the ever so light squeak of the shifter going into gear. It is just symphony of mechanical excellence
Must be gratifying to know you’ve earned the trust of the right people to be able to drive so many amazing cars! 👍
Take this over the Mustang all day, every day.
Agreed!!!
Those little Alfa's look beautiful, like a lot of Italian cars of that era, and that twin cam 4 banger sounds delicious when ya get up it.
When I was in High School in the 70’s my classmate Alex had one. Bone Stock in silver with a black interior. We would smoke a bone and go to Mc Donald’s during free period. It was awesome, needless to say later in my life I had a TI Sport AWD in Trofeo White with a Red Interior. My problem was I loved the roads around Maggie Valley and Waynesville. Small displacement is more fun because they react quicker. I bet if you had Mario or Jackie or Ken or Carroll behind the wheel and you in the passenger seat, you would definitely have a beautiful ride. Great Video
Matt:*tries to speak*
The engine: “you’re not that guy pal, your not that guy”
*proceeds to rev till redline*
Love this car, its a legend in Europe.
Engine is not just a 1,7L, but 1,75L - thats important in Alfa world.
And they are closer to 1.8L but who cares… listen to that magic
1570cc-1.57litre ;)
GTA came in two flavours: 1300 and 1600cc. Both used the same bore, but the 1300 was very short stroke. Both used a lightweight alloy-clad shell, hence GTA - GT Allegerita. The 1750 and 2000cc versions were later cars, similar bodies but clad in steel rather than aluminium, and hence rather heavier. They were the GTAm cars, standing for GT America: they had been introduced to the states in the large engine form and the racing programme had been developed to create some marketing ooomph for the American market.
@@willgrime The GTAm cars had a lot of fiberglass exterior panels.
1779cc engines.
Wow, I couldn't even finish the Mustang video because of its exhaust note. This Alfa sounds terrific.
The naturally aspirated sound of the Lampredi twin cam is unbelievable....literally its the same engine that powers the Lancia Delta HF Minus a few litres and a turbo....PURE ITALIANO!!
This makes an incredible sound! One of the most beautiful simple designs too
I'm lovin these race car videos
It makes me sad I’ll probably never get to own one, but these are some of my favorites ever to do it.
This was satisfying to watch, good job Matt!
Good to see everyone's resident Italian Automotive ambassador! It would be awesome to see you feature more of the historic Maserati and Alfa Romeo models.
Good Morning Matt 🙌 You have some good friends 👍 what a heart pumping experience, thank you for sharing. I got a little adrenaline bump sitting at my desk 🤣
In the USA the GTA's first racing victory was in January 1966 at the “Refrigerator Bowl”, at the now defunct Marlboro Raceway in Maryland, with Monty Winkler and Pete Van der Vate at the wheel. The Autodelta GTA of Horst Kwech and Gaston Andrey won the Under 2 litre class of the inaugural Sports Car Club of America's Trans-Am championship in 1966. Horst Kwech also won the first SCCA National B-Sedan ARRC Championship in the same GTA in 1966. The GTA would also go on to win the 1970 championship(wiki)
Now that looks fun! Be a very interesting to see what this would be like against the the Alfaholics GTA-R 290.
If you mean actually racing each other round a track the Alfaholics would smoke it.
@@jryalls 1000%
GTA would be standing still
I bought a Alfa '76 GTV this last May, i've enjoyed it this entire summer so far. I wanted one for so long. And it hasnt dissapointed. I'm truly in love with it.
The sounds of my people. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Beautiful noises out of that little gem.
As an Alfa owner(Busso V6), this warms my heart.

I never wanted to drive a car from one of your videos so bad! Bravo, Matt!
That sound! I miss the '83 spider veloce I once owned.
The heart of the GTA is unmistakable, but there is no substitute for qubic inches. The authentic driver can explore the greatness of Alfa Romeo!
Not taking away from how neat the Alfa is, that opening shot makes me hope that someone gives Matt a go in a 935 one day.
I love that sound... so satisfying.
Hallo Matt. This is a Giulia GTA mk1, it has a 1.6 liter engine, dual spark ignition on each cilynder and twin two barrels Weber 45 carburettors. The power in race spec is 160 hp net, more or less, and it weights about 800 kilograms.
I believe alpha at the time was one of the few manufacturers who had a five-speed manual offered if not the only one
Im not 100% but Im fairly certain Volvo did as well
Alfa was the first to introduce the 6-speed in the 33 Stradale. Ferrari was the first to do 5-speed, with Alfa not far behind.
Probably shared the 5spd with Lancia, Fiat & Ferrari.
But either way the Alfa GTV is a very pretty little car that goes like the clappers and sounds great.
Volvo 1800e
I have always loved this car and it is one of my favorite Sim rides in Assetto Corsa. I would love to get to drive one of these some day in RL! In the real world I own a 2013 c6 grand sport which I truly adore. In the past years though, I have owned a lot of very light weight sports cars from early Z's to miata's. It is extremely difficult to explain the difference of driving a light weight sports car to someone who hasn't driven such a car. I wouldn't get rid of my GS for nothing these days but I have days where I miss the driving experience of a car under 2500pds with a beefy 4 cylinder. The handling feel is unlike anything else. In my humble opinion every car enthusiast should drive a light weight sports car at some point in their lives atleast once. Thanks for having this Alfa beauty on the channel! It was a treat to enjoy the laps with my morning coffee!
Such a pretty shape.
Been my dream classic car since high school. Every time I see a GTA or GTV the price looks further and further away...
Get a GT1300 and put a 2L or 1750 in it. Cheaper. just as much fun.
Nowhere near as much fun. It would be a lovely car, but a GTA IS 25% lighter and consequently very different in so many regards. That’s why a GTA is around $350,000 dollars in Europe, while a Giulia Coupé is much less than a tenth of that.
@@willgrime its about a 200kg difference . Remove the front and rear bumper, Remove the rearseat and get the lightweigth weels saves you about 100kg. Crank the engine up a bit and you're getting more power than a traditional GTA. Upgrade the suspension and your done for 40k, beating every original GTA you'll ever encounter.
I know because ive driven both and own one.
@@SpawnNLThe trail is a year old but...
I'm currently restoring a GT Junior and attempting to subtly lighten it a bit, without wrecking it's character. Very interested in your weight-saving ideas. Did you weigh individual elements? I'm estimating Alcoholics alloy wheels, rear seat removal and bumper delete saves about 30 kg's. Are you in U.S? Did they get big crash protection bumpers (Fiat X19 style) in the 70's
?
@@garethmcrae668 no in in the Eu. You could also remove the passenger seat, if not needed ofcourse. And there are quite a few bits you could drill out.
Besides that a lighter flywheel is a great improvement. Not just for weight but especially for performance.
Matt get yourself an Alfa Giulia GT Junior and have it modified with Alfaholics bits and magics by your friend Donnie! It would be the best drivers car you’ll ever own!
Great video, l have loved vintage Alfas for more than 30 years… great driving, but l think you would be faster using more rews. These 1600 engines needs more than 6000 rpm to move fast. Did not see the rew counter, but since l have raced Alfas for years you should at least use 7500 rpm😀 thanks for the video!
What a treat to see a real GTA on here. Rarest car ever on TST?
My dream car!
Old Alfas are pure art
All Alfa's are art.
@@bruhscousin9788 Wrong
Now imagine racing this with Cortina's , 1800 TI/sa , mini's etc I miss the revival :(
That sound🔥
What a beast. Now try light weight GTV Jr. LoL. Just wants to rev.
Nice time in England Matt and Zach you HAVE to go visit Alfaholics ✨
that looks like good fun
Wooden wheel is so sweet
Full aluminum monocoque, 700kg, double barrel Weber’s, 4 wheel discs brakes, 5 speed transmission, double overhead cam….
Not we are not taking about the advertisement for a brand new American car but the specs of 60 years old Alfa Romeo 🍀
Did you shortshift it or did I watch this with low volume? Also do I get behind the scenes or making of videos with thesmokingtirerino patreon?
Cool car
this is sweeeeeeeet! I want one
Now drive a BRE 510!
So, Matt when will you show us your Ferrari 308 again?
Awesome!
Can you see if you can get to drive the Alfaholics GTA-R? You'd have to fly to the UK though, but you've flown to see ratarossa's car so....
I wish there was a modern equivalent of this. Maybe they could convert the GR86 into a sedan...
Matt, just two things, was your Fiesta ST faster & handle better than that Alfa, and you should try and drive John Morton’s 510 Datsun for a comparison, the Datsun was 2.0 liter champion over team Alfa & BMW. Awesome video. The Fiesta Flash 🤙🏼🍺🍺🍺
Let's go Brandon
someone's caught the alfa bug
🍀
While power can be fun, nothing like slow car fast...
This is why they invented the MX5
Dreeeaaam caaaar! 🤤🤤🤤🤤😍😍😍😍😍😍 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
I’m curious about its weight? Would 1750lbs be far off?
Homologated at 760kg
cool
The gtv Retropowers did is one of my favorite cars ever.
With the Millington Diamond motor? Haha monster

I wonder why it has the scuderia ferrari shields
Learn some history bro.
This is why all those million dollar restomods can't touch the original. No amount of money can create a better sound than this 🤤
Alfaholics sounds better
@@jryalls you can’t race the gta-r though. But really, they’re pretty much the same price right now. So different strokes for different folks. And Alfaholics will prepare either of the two for you ;)

Lol that mini destroyed you 🤣
He wasn’t really pushing the Alfa… Mini can out-brake the Alfa, but that’s about it… assuming they are both period correct racecars
Can u guys do a w166 ml63 amg (2012-2016). Wanna know if its the right financial mistake to make.
He doesn’t review old cars unless they’re significant.
@Mr Calcium the lexus and acuras are slow, ugly and sound like dog shit. Rather spend 25-30k on one of these.

Lmao the speedo doesn't work. How fucking italian is that? "Nono you needa seea tha revs nota tha speed!" Also is that a factory Ferrari car? I know Ferrari used to race Alfas back in the day.. or was it Alfa racing Ferraris..? Either way, great video!
Non conosce la macchina, non la sa guidare, perché fargli toccare una gta! 🤦🏻♂️
Give me a a Datsun 510 any day!
In fairness there is a £300,000 price difference.
Not the best track for this car, too many straights, too few bends.

You win the internet. Wear it with pride 🥇
Coming first isn't something to be proud of, mate.
It sounds a little flat, or did they peg you to 6,000 rpm (just starting to get going)? Mine goes to 8,000 no problems...Good to see you 'getting' old Alfas. Get a GT Junior, do the period mods and you won't have more fun.
