  • Woodturning: Make a tool rest of any length for your woodturning lathe, using silver brazing. No welding required!
Jan 23 2016 - this just in! Lyle Jamieson passed on a suggestion to put a wedge of wood in the right angle of the angle iron, so that if the tool slips off the end (or even the lip) of the rest, you'll be less likely of catching a finger or two. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Not sure if I have seen this or not.... I used to make the Big Ugly tool, which is 3 inches of 1/8 by 1 inch wide tantung silver soldered onto bar stock. A very heavy duty scraper. When doing the silver soldering, I had to use silver solder ribbon. One other guy made them and put a couple of pieces of silver solder wire under the tantung. Had to do it because the wire solder wound not wick in all the way from the edges, and considering the abuse this tool takes, it needed full attachment. Like the little mini torch. Apparently the more modern MAPP torches do not get hot enough to get a good bond.
Oh, I do prefer hardened drill rod for the tops of my tool rests. Not sure how to do it myself. I did find the A drill rod to be far harder than the oil or water rod. Love the way the tools slip across the top, and how even I can't seem to put dents and dings in them.

I finally gave up on silver brazing. Just couldn’t get the steel hot enough.

@@RickTurnsWoodturning I just picked up a medium sized torch yesterday mostly to make some custom little ugly tools for box making. I would think that for soldering some drill rod onto a surface, you would need to cut a groove in the metal you were going to solder it to. Not sure. I believe that is how Steve Sinner makes his tool rests. I did find out that after having the drill rod hardened, welding it to the support arm did not change the tempering of the drill rod at all.

You sir are my kind of craftsman. $20 is my sticker shock limit as well. I've been making do with a bad sized tool rest for years, now I'm off to fix that.

I have made all of these tool rests over the last 25 yrs it is. Good to invest in a set of very cheap welders right angle magnets to hold it in place and find a friendly local engineer with a skip outside for Material ps I am lucky enough to have a small welder which lasts for ever and is cheaper than gas in the long run

I have given up on doing with the small mapp torch. I think the torch regulator quit working, and I didn’t want to buy another. An oxyacetylene welder is the way to, I’m convinced. Thanks for watching and commenting, Harry.

Gunsmiths used to use silver soldering a lot. I suppose they still, do but interests have changed and I don't keep up with it as much now. I don't suppose it's quite as strong as "welding", in deference to Mr. Serna (below), but undoubtedly sufficient for this.

Sounds like a good idea. I had considered buying one but even if I wanted to spend the money, I don't know anything about using a welder. My other concern is that the mig welders I have looked at say they will weld up to 3/16" steel, or something similar. So that makes me wonder if that weld will work. I like to hear how it works out for you.

Very interesting video! One question please. How strong is silver brazing compared to standard welding?

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning

+Terry Ellis Hi, Terry. I'm not sure which joint is stonger, welded vs brazed. However, from what I've read, both joints are stronger than the metals being joined. From what I've experienced (from my tool rests), the brazed joint is strong enough for the stresses produced during woodturning. I've never had a tool rest fail, except when I had a bad brazed joint. After I braze the post to the cross-arm, and let it cool, I whack it hard with a small sledge hammer. If I've done a poor job, it breaks. But when I've done it right, which is usually, it won't show any weakness when pounding on it with the sledge. The brazed joint depends on good mating surfaces of the two pieces, and then getting both hot enough so that the brazing filler flows into the joint by capillary action. The only problem I've had with brazing is getting both pieces of one inch rod up to red hot...I usually have to do it in several different spots around the circumference. The large mass of the two one inch pieces siphons off heat very rapidly, so it can be difficult to get both pieces up to temperature with just a mapp torch. It can be done, of course, and I've made over a dozen tool rests.

I hope you "fill" the angle iron with a triangle wedge of wood. There is a danger of running the tool off the end of the tool rest and the downward force while cutting could injure fingers. It could act like a guillotine. By filling the angle iron with a wood block the force of the error will slide you away from danger.

+Lyle Jamieson Thanks for the suggestion, Lyle. I hadn't thought of doing that, but it does sound like a good idea. I'll add a comment to the video notes about that.

@@RickTurnsWoodturning Okay, thank you very much for your fast response. I was looking at your setup and at first glance it looked like it was made out of wood, now that I take a closer look I can tell it's steel or cast.
