A New Tool Rest Under the Sun!!

- The Double 9 D is a new style of tool rest...a single rod of 1" steel stamped into a shape with two 90 degree bends. I test it out on bowls and spindles.
1/5/17 - Joe just released a new video where he's using the Double 9 D to turn a bowl. Here's a link to that video: bit.ly/2E9xjJn
Like all tools, the Double 9 D has its areas where it excels and areas where it doesn't; if you'd like to skip all the detail on what I tested, advance to position 16:26 in the video for my summary of the Double 9 D's good points.

A very thorough and no nonsense review Rick. My opinion is similar to yours, after watching the video right through, that it would be ideal for the outside wall, and the inside wall and bottom, but not as good for spindle turning. Would make a very tempting alternative to the curved bowl rests that are on the market. Great video.
Cheers
Mike
Thanks, Mike!
For me is good use for inside the bowl. Thank you for sharing
Thanks for commenting, Tomas.
very good review. When money is no option.. (and it is) this is another tool for a specific purpose. Thanks for the information. I can see this as being very useful. Your honesty is much appreciated.
Thank you!
the double 9d looks like a good piece of kit, like all rests it dose have its limitations but it does do bowls very nicely. this is a tool that I will be buying. thanks Rick
I like it, and continue to use it. Thanks for watching, Ron.
Very good review!!
Thanks, Charlie.
Each makes a tool for himself. Easy to work!
Thanks for commenting, Aleksey.
Looks like this off set tool rest would be good on gap bed lathes when turning a platter or thin item especially using a faceplate
Helpful demo. Thanks.
Thanks for your comment, Mike.
I think you just saved me some money. Thkx for the review
Thanks for commenting!
THANK you 1st look I thought WOW I want that then 2nd made me think twice still going to get it I do a lot of smaller things thank you Apollo much Rick as always
Thanks much for watching, Daniel. That video was some years back. I believe that tool rest is still available, but I haven't checked.
Excellent review, Rick, but for *me* this is a solution without a corresponding problem. It doesn't seem to work well for anything except a relatively square-bottomed bowl. What works for me inside a bowl is to simply swing the banjo around 180 degrees, then successively swing the near side of the rest into the bowl. This keeps the rest and gouge at obtuse angles, and provides deep support for scrapers. Clyde
Thanks for your comments, Clyde. I haven't tried doing a 180 with the banjo.
I think it a good rest for bowl turners. The inside and outside corner areas can't be beat. After all curved rests are limited use rests also. I have the well known curved rest but don't use it because it's still out too far most of the time.
Thanks for your comments, Lee.
wow. 3 yrs. in development.
Thanks for watching, DBat.
.....how many rpm are the speed 4X?
That 4x banner is referring to the video speed, not the lathe speed. 4x means I have speeded up the video recording. I do this to be able to show more of the relevant operations without taking up too much time. Thanks for watching my videos!
I think it's easier with the old rest, was straight forward and predictable because it had one dimension. With the new one you have to constantly re-adjust because of its shape
That’s true, but I find it comes in really handy for some bowl interiors. It’s not a general purpose tool rest by any means.
So Rick, are you keeping it? 😁
Yes, I am. I've already mailed a check to Joe Glassford.
All well and good, but what if your tool post hole is 5/8
I forgot to put that in the video. Joe says he is currently working on a 5/8” version. But I don’t have a date for it.
Cool, though my little lathe can't turn anything bigger than 10"
It would fit inside a 10" bowl. Maybe Joe will have a 5/8" available sometime soon.
We are working on a 5/8" diameter prototypes are in the final stages.
That bowl is busted all to pieces.
Yep. It had splits in it when I started, and developed more as I turned it. It’s in the burn pile now.
Good video but not worth the money in my opinion watching all the times you ran into the bands and had to move it as for him saying about welded ones I have two I made one bent and one straight for my powermatic 90 and took them to the weld shop and you are not going to break them
Thanks for your comments, Richard.
too long. outside the support center. cause vibration. insecure
Not sure what you mean about the support center...are you talking about the banjo hole where the post sits? After using it for a while, I haven't had any vibration with it.
Gilson have you use it? Your comment is not valid. At the distance from the center of the tool holder all the way out there is no vibration, just convenience for its application.
