Every time I watch Gilmore I come up with new practice exercises. Gilmore and Lyman are probably my two biggest sources for watching something and developing practice routines for independence and coordination
@@hammondOT Listen to his Zildjian live set, any of his work with Vijay Iyer (Break Stuff, the album, is a start), his solo output, any of the live improv sets he did with Zakir Hussain and the Masters of Percussion, and then come back and justify your foolishness my brother in Allah 🙏
Damn! That kit is TIGHT! In every sense. High tuned heads, fuzzy beater, tiny sharp hats, super articulate cymbals, and then, well... MARCUS to set it on fire 🔥
Pretty dope how he can use the bell hats as an alternative snare/backbeat type sound to keep the hands completely free to color it all in. Marcus is so dope. And as others are discussing, that ride is something else.
He doesn't play the same thing twice because he's not really playing anything. It's all random notes, no pattern. No logical or melodic phrasing whatsoever. Just randomness.
now i have to google Marcus' granpa? Thanks. you know what? I won't. I never knew his granpa was percussion but mayyybe there's youtubes of his granpa??? ok now i'm searching
I remember the first time I've heard Mr. Marcus Gilmore with the guitar player Gilad Hekselman and Mark Turner. His sense of "time" and skills completely blew me away. Talent combined with hard work and a bit of luck managing opportunities and there we have it, Marcus Gilmore.
So sparse, interpretive, tone driven. He cares so much about the sounds each piece of his kit makes as opposed to just the percussive elements. This felt like... decorating air. It felt like he played the the interpretive din of a coffee shop, but it's in the foreground instead of muffled background noise. Really cool stuff yo.
At 2:12 he does a fast double with the second note landing a rim shot. I've seen this in his playing a bunch but have real trouble landing this move consistently. Does anyone know of any learning resources regarding this move outside of shanking 1000000 of them before getting it right?
Carter McLean has a great exercise for the left hand: ua-cam.com/video/fnjvl0zAr3g/v-deo.htmlsi=jBJId_Hc2q8TxSco A threestroke roll with accents in 5s: RllrlLrllrLlrll
I think you might want to try push pull and on the upstroke just slide your wrist down into the rimshot as you pull up with your fingers Not really sure as I haven’t tried it myself but if I were to approach it that might be what id do

Marcus is in a league of his own. gushing over the cross over between worlds of great drummers. Aaron, Matt and Marcus all had a part in the experience of this recording. It's so cool to hear and see. I am sure a lot more creative ears made suggestions. Did anyone in particular drive the development of the Raw crash?
Is there any chance that someone from Zildjian Vault share the recording set up of this fantastic performance? Which mics, preamps and converters were used? Speaking of Marcus...he's on another level. Period.
I like that Z is trying to design for Marcus! That's what this feels like. Marcus is a goddamn Wizard! Zildjian tried to recreate his favorite 2nd hi-hat and made it a thick Bell-Like beast. Far out. First thing Marcus does: Turn that into a bell!
@@Halvorhalvorhalvor111 was in an email with someone from VF, their reply was something like “think they’ll be available again in may”, however they’ve never been available …. So who knows, I imagine a lot of artists that have their own signature stick are just sent a bunch and are not necessarily ever available to the public. The modern Jazz Collection series from Vic Firth, were previously 5 different signature sticks for certain artists. They weren’t widely available for the masses until they brought out that collection. Just like how you can get the black nylon tip Quincy Davis sticks from his website, I’d say he does all the shipping himself. Don’t know if any stores stock his stock unless they order it straight from him.
God I felt so teased. Zil Bell hi hats are you serious??? He played them for a few secs and was like nah... Come on man. Was DYING to hear him play those hi hats smh... His dynamics are amazing but damn it man play a beat on the hi hats like you would a regular kit. Missed oppurtunity. Ahhhhh. Benny Greb and Steward Copeland also play very small hi hats.

Absolute mind melter of a drummer
Perfectly said.
Not really.

@@7c2d I've heard most of it, he's not that great. Bog standard jazz drummer and not very innovative.

One of my absolute favs, Marcus never disappoints
This guy's independence so smooth
This is like ASMR but for drums. So good!

This is what our minds really dance to, I felt every bit on my head, digging this forever now, thanks.
Great drummer, great tshirt!
He’s really like the modern version of his grandfather. So innovative and imaginative they never really play the same thing twice
It’s like an improvised monologue on the drums. So much flow!

That is some tasty playing! Cool cymbal combo, too.
Those 7" FX Blast Bell hats are INSANE
Thank you for posting, sooo musical!
Amazing performance. Thoroughly enjoyed that!
What a master, so musical, so inspired
That articulation ride he picked out sounds incredible! I want one!
i will cry now
it's gonna be ok filip
woowww.. that was totally awesome! never heard somebody use bells for hats such a cool vibe
imagine someone comes into your drum shop to "try out a cymbal" and plays this haha...Marcus is just on a whole other level
That was f'n amazing. So creative
A true master of nuances
Phenomenal sound!! 🔥🔥🔥
The little hi-hat is cool but that ride is fenomenal
Yeah they really nailed it with that ride. I can’t wait to find one to try out in person
This is the type of drumming that’s harder than it looks 💯
This guy is insane!!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Best modern Jazz Drummer!
The legacy of Roy Haines 🙏
been wondering what that ride was. thanks!
incredible drumming also. felt totally unrehearsed and raw. loved it.

Loved the performance , this inspires me to play solos like that ... I am sure the ride with rivets or somesort of sizzle would sound great also .
perfection
Really nice sounds
Love that ride. Make it appear near me. !
That hi-hat is too big
That hi hat is at least 42 inches which is unacceptable.
What hi hat ?😁
🤣🤣
This man is a genius and master. The will drum circles around you…with any hi hat. Or no hi hat.
I love how drumming feels like dancing. I'm wondering how does it feel in his body to play . He seems to be so relaxed.

beautifull drumming
