How long does it take before it is safe to transplant to a bigger pot? i follwed the video and had many that threw out new leaves and flowers, but when I went to repot, it didn't look liker there was any roots at all, and the plants ended up dying.
I have a neighbor that has a bunch of bougainvilleas of different colors that blend together as a long hedge around their property like a rainbow. It is so beautiful.
You can propagate Bougies from large pieces/stumps/cuttings as thick as your arm. 30-40cm long, put in tub with 6 inches of sand, water them , cover with plastic, keep moist. In a month or 2 you will have new shoots and roots and a new plant with a really chunky trunk. Many bonsai growers use this method to get a good size trunk almost instantly.
It takes longer time for new sprouts as compared to normal /medium sizes cuttings. However if successful the bigger branches will make you forget how long you have waited because they are masterpiece and obsolutely satisfying
I love how you felt terrible cutting the blooms. I hate cutting the blooms but I keep the blooms scattered on the table as long as I can. First time here and subscribed right away.
I’m glad I found this method so I can try something different with the bag. My mother has a variegated bougainvillea that we have tried to propagate for years with no success. My father who is no longer with us bought it for her, so propagating it and having one for myself would be special. I’ll keep you posted if this works.
Quick update. I tried it with 5 different cuttings. The one I thought would not root is the only one that did. So 1/5, but multiple people have tried for years and it has been unsuccessful. Let’s see if it continues to grow. Thanks again!!
As a small bougainvilleas propogator/seller o would like to note that the older the cutting the better it is. Usually i propogate cuttings that are at least as as thick as a pen and you dont need to put it in a green house/mini green house.
I have four bogainvilla. I just snipped my tangerine, lavender and butter yellow and planted them as shown in your video, but I used honey instead. Tomorrow I will trim back my pink one and try that as well. Fingers crossed. Thanks Dave!
I plant my cuttings in a box of soil in the fall. Leave it alone all winter and when the time comes they leaf out. I do this to all cut n pokes. Mom taught me when I was wittle that trees go dormant in winter but the roots keep growing.
Just what I was looking for! Some of my plants need extra long stems trimmed and I want more plants! Thanks for the info! I try to lable but the writing fades any way. You are enjoyable to watch! Funny! You answered all my questions as I was thinking them.
Thanks you for this video. I have a neighbor that has a Bougainvillea. And I would like to get some starts from. After watching your video, I can do it. Thanks again
Thankl you for this tutorial. I live in FL and while I love bougainvillea, I don't have a green thumb. After watching this video, I feel more confident to try and grow some bougainvillea from cuttings. I want to get a copy of your book too.
Glad to represent. I will wear it daily until you send me back to Indo. What a great experience meeting other believers and talking agriculture. Glad to be a part of the ministry.
I made a small aeroponic system to grow a small salsa garden but by accident I found that it also makes cuttings root super fast. I had stuck some bougainvillea cuttings in there when my tomato plant got too big and had to be moved outdoors. I was shocked how fast it rooted. Now I use it just for propagating.
Hi David. really enjoyed your video. I've loved Bougainvillea's since I was a kid in Argentina (We called them Santa Rita). I'm 38 now and I bought one online and it came with the hard woody stem and a couple of branching leaves. Well, the USPS guy left in in my mailbox for a couple of days at 32 degrees. Needless to say, I was left with just the woody stem. I persisted. Watered it and within a couple of weeks, 3 new chutes were growing. I kept at it for another month and decided to move it to a bigger pot. (Rookie mistake). I was careful enough not to disturb the roots and it's been another month and it's still "ok". It has however seemed to have stopped growing. Not only that, but I moved it to a sunny window side and when the sun hits it, the leaves appear soft and droopy. When the sun goes away, the firm up again. Any thoughts on how to keep it growing and what's going on with the sun?
Glad you guys have a large property to plant those on. In a neighborhood like mine I can’t believe people plant these. They are out of control! I had two that took me years to finally kill. People say the roots are fragile and stuff and I have gone to town on the stumps with axes, hammers, chainsaws and they still keep growing back! Be careful where you put them because they grow so fast and take over everything around them
Now how on earth did I miss this Goodstream?!! Well, I'm here and totally absorbing all the facts stated here and learning how to propagate Bougainvillea, 😂it is a bit hard to pronounce at first but maybe the name we give it here in Mexico is better? Camelina, my dad established 3 purple and one red and they are growing GOOD, just this day I trimmed some of the thorny vines, and thought is it possible to establish new plants from cuttings? So I came here and lots of videos but why go to the others when I see you my mentor, David The Good showing us how to go about it! Don't know if you know but the red or purple flowers, 2 flowers with a rind of sweet lime or lima(the lime is round, looks like a small orange while the lima is somewhat bell-shaped with a round protuberance at the end), well you steep the flowers and the piece of rind in hot water and you have an infusion to help you recuperate from your cold, flu or sniffles. Gonna try your method tomorrow with some cuttings, well the totally green one no good but the other 3 have a brown, barklike texture and plant these guard plants to protect our home! , Thanks for sharing and greetings for Miss Rachel, the Good Children, including #10 and you Sir David!
Yes appropriate size and kiddy colored watering can, VERY IMPORTANT! LOL Nice one! Thanks David, I just killed seven cuttings, so will definitely try this!
Out of about 50 cuttings, only two took off. I had the plastic bags on top of them and kept them in the shadow. I should have used a pink watering can as well :)
Hi sir David. Thank you for the tips and advice. It is very timely because i will do that later. I have here Bougainvillea and i want to transfer in a small pot. You gave me many good ideas. Thanks again
Lovely David nice to see cuttings been done.. Always interesting.. Wish I could gtow them here in Ireland it's to cold. Only moss and shamrock grows here 😂😂😂😂🇮🇪☘️
I've been replanting little sprigs of mint that come from restaurants :D I generally strip down the bottom most leaves to expose the inner bark, and cut the bottom at an angle, then wrap it in a napkin and soak it with water until we get home. If I know we'll be out of the house for quite a while, sometimes I'll put them in a small plastic bag as well, blow my Co2 into it and tie it off, making sure it's sitting upright. Get home, take a really small stick and poke a hole in the soil, put in the twig, gently pinch soil around it, water it in, and quite often they regrow :D One time, I left it in a plastic bag outside in the shade for quite a while, and it actually started to root in the wet paper napkin :D
I have a love/hate relationship with these. They're so pretty, and little birds love to make protected nests in them. (I love the birds) the thorns on these are so bad though. Make sure to wear long sleeves when trimming these...And definitely don't plant them near a driveway like someone I know did. (Okay, it was me)...the thorns on a mature plant will go through a car tire, and stab right through the bottom of thin flip-flops. Anyways, I had no idea these could be propagated. Really cool. 👍
Hi, what happen to them now? Are they growing well? I have 3 bougainvillea i rescued from a shop that almost throw them away, and i am thinking to propagate them to share to my friends
Just finished doing this .. I love that I’m essentially getting free plants! Even plan on beautifying the neighborhood with them. I Use a bit thicker cuttings and just pop them in the shade until they bud. Once they are established I transition them to the sun. Made the non labelling mistake and had to fertilize to see the bloom colors. I have a pattern I want to keep for the Boug. wall I am making.
Well you totally won me over. You make it sound so easy. I am a new subscriber. I always thought you had to wet the cutting then use the hormone on it. Plus I always water before pushing the stem into the soil. Is that what wrong?? Can I use this method for like princess geraniums? I just can't get those flowers to root for me. I am 70 years old, but I don't feel like it. I love working in my yard with my flowers, but I never have any money to buy more. Not living high on the hog on SSI. Your channel is perfect for me. Thanks for this video!
Ahhh perfect! ...I have a few dwarf bougainvillea, wanted a couple more but can’t find them anywhere. It’s very hot here (I think it was 92 today) I don’t need to water for weeks??? My daughter’s mini watering can is red, not pink, so wish me luck- I hope it works!
Watched this two weeks ago and I can't believe that all of my cuttings already have leaves! I used cinnamon and clearly it worked:) Do you recommend the plastic bag method for all propagating or only certain plants? Thanks!
More of a reason for cutting off the lease is because the plant will be sending energy to those leaves instead of to growing roots which it needs to do first. If it grows leaves with no roots it’s going to die.I think leaving a small one is a better idea than cutting a big one just seems like it would take less energy but I’m not sure I know flowers take the most energy
Just wondering I have one but it’s just like a stick right now it did bloom last year but I want to have one full in a hanging basket so should I just cut the one I have and try to root it iam in Vancouver bc Canada zone 8 b and it’s now Jan 25 2023 can I do this now or do I have to wait till spring ,,great video
Thanks. So you did not water them in the 6 weeks it was bagged? I'm in the Florida ridge Zone 9a where soil is very sandy. I'd like to do the same thing with my perimeter but ideally without pots and in there permanent spot.
I have two plants and I put them outside this summer got a lot of sunshine then it turned cold one night, now there is nothing but bare stems. What can I do with it? I think it is still alive. Please let me know I Love these plants!

Thanx!! Do you need to poke holes in the plastic bag for ventilation?
"the plants dont know that you're cheap, and they don't care". Love it. Great video!
Plants are recyclers by nature.
I have a neighbor that has a bunch of bougainvilleas of different colors that blend together as a long hedge around their property like a rainbow. It is so beautiful.
That's a great idea 👍 I can only get this pinkish purple one or I would try this
Wow

Thank you. I'm moving and wanna take some of a 30yr old Bougy my grandmother planted!
Cool!
Yes. 👍
When you say sand, what do you mean?
The intro song, your wife tapping your shoulder, the throw into the compost pile, just a few things that totally won me over 🤣🤣
Thank you.
Yeqh me too . Exactly the same things you said
Also the mispronunciation that helped too.
Borrowing the daughter's little pink watercan! 😭
And also..."random neighborhood children!" 🤣🤣🤣
I love how you felt terrible cutting the blooms. I hate cutting the blooms but I keep the blooms scattered on the table as long as I can. First time here and subscribed right away.
Exactly me 😂Mom always told Me to throw it alway ,but i just want to cling them around the house ,cant help

Did you use any kind of rooting agent? If so what kind?
BTW, I hope your bougie grows big and beautiful.
Update us now
Great your daughter having the interest it's wonderful your a great dad.. You will have to call the plant after her 😊🌿
As a small bougainvilleas propogator/seller o would like to note that the older the cutting the better it is. Usually i propogate cuttings that are at least as as thick as a pen and you dont need to put it in a green house/mini green house.
Very good - thank you!
I'd love to see a video or pics please.
I have a huge Bogie, decades old.
Did he say is not edible? I thought Bongavillea was edible great for salads and make teas ?
Great tip everyone says newer growth but I’ve had better success with older stems. The younger always die off
I have four bogainvilla.
Thank you so much
David you are hilarious! Absolutely loved this and can't wait to watch more! So informative and the polar opposite of boring!!
Thank you
My husband and I love your song at the end. I think we listened to it at least 5 times. Made us laugh 😂. Take care.

I'm bursting with laughter from the Bouga rap to close! Amazing. Thanks for your free expression
I went to a talk you had for preppers in NSB. It was very informative! So glad to find your channel.
Just what I was looking for! Some of my plants need extra long stems trimmed and I want more plants! Thanks for the info! I try to lable but the writing fades any way. You are enjoyable to watch! Funny! You answered all my questions as I was thinking them.

I love your personality!!!🤣
Thank you for the knowledge🤗
LOL! What on earth was that rap at the end, I loved it.
She was so sweet make for you the labels. Thank for sharing 👏🌷🥰
Thankl you for this tutorial. I live in FL and while I love bougainvillea, I don't have a green thumb. After watching this video, I feel more confident to try and grow some bougainvillea from cuttings. I want to get a copy of your book too.
Great shirt! Thanks for sporting KW! We love Bougainvillea and used them similarly around the perimeter of our home in Malawi.
Glad to represent. I will wear it daily until you send me back to Indo. What a great experience meeting other believers and talking agriculture. Glad to be a part of the ministry.

Thank you. I've been trying to propagate bougainvillier for months now. Your video is really clear.
Thank you, Viviane
I need a tiny pink watering can 😂😂 Didn’t expect to enjoy this !!

It sounds like the root system is damaged or still immature. I would watch and wait. Don't over water.
Glad you guys have a large property to plant those on. In a neighborhood like mine I can’t believe people plant these. They are out of control! I had two that took me years to finally kill. Beautiful bougainvillea😊😊😊😊
‘Now I’m at the compost pile’ 😬 hahaha nice commentary man! I’m in Los Angeles and there are so many bougainvillea.. Your video inspired me!
Im really digging that biscuits song in the beginning .......also, awesomely informative video thanks !
I used to watch you years ago. I stopped gardening and gave up. I’ve gotten back into it and I forgot your Chanel name but I’ve found it!
Wecome back

I've tried this a million times and no luck, thanks for video
Enjoyed that a lot! Thank you! (And now I need a little pink watering can.)
That was nice.. Bougainvillea is one of my favourite
Your instructions are so clear, thanks! Now to find my rooting hormone:) Very much appreciated!!
Great video! something not very clear is after how and mow often to water the cuttings in the cup covered with bag.
Thank you for all your plant wisdom!, Helping my thumbs get greener and my life betterer!!
That intro, though, with the spelling 🤣
"Ahhhhh, thanks sweetheart"😅😅😅😅😅 He was sooo condescending😂😂😂😂😂😂❤
The tap on the back with the tags took me out 🤣
Came for the edibles originally but love the other type of gardening plants also.
I have a love/hate relationship with these. They're so pretty, and little birds love to make protected nests in them. (I love the birds) the thorns on these are so bad though. I accidentally walked ovee some pruned branches once... ouch!
As a bougie propogator (im not sure if thats a word) i never have a day that i dont have some cut on my arm hahahah

Does using the cinnamon guard against mold or anything like that?
Wow so beautiful plants dear friend thanks for sharing informative video 👌👌🤗🤗🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Love the daughter watering can!
Old yogurt containers: your plants don’t know you’re cheap. That’s awesome. I use individual Pringle’s containers for starting seeds
Haha,my neighbours peek and gossip when I reuse my pringles cans but I dont really care 🤣
Ben Burger we eat a lot of yogurt... so it’s used as mugs to pour water... propagate all plants, herb garden
Thanks for the video I want to order some online for privacy around my backyard I love this bougainvillea I can't wait to plant them
Very informative. Thank you. Like the simplicity.
Thank goodness no elevator music! Thank you for sharing, I am going to try it.
I almost spilled my coffee reading the title of this video 😆 Were there drainage holes in your pots?
Thank you so much

Also use @1-galllon plastic and cut 1/2😻
You are amazing! I'm so happy I found you, I am a new subscriber for sure.
Hare Krishna. So amazing planting. Nice share

Thanks for this video!
70 is young
This was both funny and informative.
Thank you, Mimi.
Wow, ya got me excited now:))) I'm on it. Easy to understand, thanks so much:)
You killed me with the ending! Never expected that.... 🤣😂🤣
Once you plant the propagations how often should I water them when inside a plastic bag?
Dropping knowledge and a banger at the end! 🎵
Thank you. Well demonstrated and explained.
I like how this guy has parlayed his rap talent into his gardening channel.
Awesome! Needed this video. Hope it works for me!
this video was hilarous and informative! glad to find this channel
Welcome
I just did this to a bunch of red roses.
I'm gonna go get some blueberry branches next.
Nice realxing informative videos
Could we collest seeds
Thank David!
Great explaination. Thanks, you are so funny. One love 🇯🇲
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME GROWING CUTTING BOUGAINVILLE DURING THE YEAR PLEASE?? THANK YOU 🙏
Nice so much with the music. Love it.
Great video David, thank you for the information. Just subscribed, I will be interested to learn more. I love to garden and grow food!
Thank you
Watched this two weeks ago and I can't believe that all of my cuttings already have leaves! I used cinnamon and clearly it worked:) Do you recommend the plastic bag method for all propagating or only certain plants? Thanks!
Most plants that dry out easily. I do not use it with succulents.
What potting soil do you use ?
Just starting few pot of Barbara karst to be eventually repotted in large terrocata pots. But, how and when to prune for eventually a lush bloom.
You can do tea with the Flores it’s very good for health
Thanks for the great info again !!! Would love to see how your hedge turned out??
Me too! We moved over 1000 miles north since this video. Sorry I can’t update.
The Ficus religiosa is the easiest to grow from stem cutting in soil or coir medium. The Ficus lyrata is the easiest to Air-layer.
Thank you for sharing I'm a plants lover too
Thank you, Lyn.
In Brazil, (where the bougainvilleas are also from), we call it PRIMAVERA as well. It might be easier for you to say it. 😊
So do you only water it one time ?
At what point did you start introducing it to direct sunlight and how'd u do it?
Just wondering I have one but it’s just like a stick right now it did bloom last year but I want to have one full in a hanging basket so should I just cut the one I have and try to root it iam in Vancouver bc Canada zone 8 b and it’s now Jan 25 2023 can I do this now or do I have to wait till spring ,,great video
Thanks. So you did not water them in the 6 weeks it was bagged? I'm in the Florida ridge Zone 9a where soil is very sandy. I'd like to do the same thing with my perimeter but ideally without pots and in there permanent spot.
came for the plants and gardening, stayed for the sick beats
If Rhyme was a crime, he'd be most wanted; got bougainvillea skills that gotta be flaunted.
I have two plants and I put them outside this summer got a lot of sunshine then it turned cold one night, now there is nothing but bare stems. What can I do with it? I think it is still alive. Please let me know I Love these plants!
Thanks, where’s your link? Silly question, do you water after he bag or does that create sufficient moisture while rooting?
