Brah thanks to your videos I didn’t need to hire a pool guy this year and did everything myself! You should have some university pool boy shirts. I’d Rock one.
Yea my pool guy said to clean a cartridge filter every couple of months and especially after opening once it’s filtered out all that dirty water from the winter, that’s when it is the worst. Otherwise, once a week? Who has time for that? Four cartridges in my filter and they definitely won’t fit in a 5 gallon bucket. Takes me over an hour to clean it well.
I didn't clean my filter from like February till now end of Sept lol and my pump motor broke in between so it didn't run for a period of time. When we opened the tank the DE grids were all gooey and green. Pool guy also poured like 2-3 bottles of chlorine liquid all over the pool because pool had a pretty greenish blue cloudy look and algaes were growing all over the walls. Ran the pump for the night and next morning it was crystal clear :D Also this is in southern Calif lol

Did I miss the removal of the drain plug and inside tank rinse when cleaning the cartridge type filter? When the filter cartridges are properly sized and combined with a variable speed pump set a the right speeds once a year cleaning is sufficient.
I found an easy way to reinstall DE filter pads that needs to be shared. I don’t do videos so perhaps you can add this to one of yours. I was one of those who struggled with getting my Hayward filter pads realigned after taking them off the manifold. There was always one or two that would leak DE back into the pool on completion. I thought one or more may have torn but it turned out the filter pads weren’t seated properly to the manifold. I found it by running the pump in the backwash mode (cover off) and seeing water leaking from several of the connections. After disassembling I turned the manifold upside down, started with the short pad and worked clockwise outside to inside making sure all pads were well seated into the manifold and there correct spacers. The hardest part was getting the long bolt back into the manifold hole and it wasn’t that bad. All in all this was a much easier task than working from the normal position and no leaks or DE back into my pool. As a side note, I almost purchased a new filter set at $100 plus.
Once a week? Holy cow.. thats a waste of water. California would arrest me for doing that. I clean the filter when i notice the suction in the drain and out the sides slows down. Maybe once every 3 months...sometimes longer.
@@Anon1mousI clean pools and we clean it at least twice a month. Not every week that’s too much. Usually we clean it when the heater on the generator says it’s low or if the vacuuming suction is low
Question. I have a cheap Coleman pool. I use type b filter and I've have 3..... different brands. All have had the core collapsed in on itself. Any thoughts? I just got over shock and floc. Was still cloudy but clear. Maybe just too fine of debris clogging?
I've been uing the same DE filter for over twenty five years.and I have yet the need to acid wash it. Backwasing is done, probably about once a month and onl y open the filter at the time of pool closing to hose it out. My pool is always sparkling clean!
Hello so I have gotten my first pool and after a couple times of using it,it became dirty and cloudy and there is dust on the floors and stuff and I know about the cleaning things to use but I don't under anything about pH or testing those type of things so please make a video that explains those type of things
When I remove the pump cover to pour in the cleaner, water gushes out. This occurs even though the valve entering the pump is closed and the filter head is set to filter. How can I get the cleaner in that way
Our above ground 13 x 33 ( 1900 gallons ) pool keeps Turing green after a week , we have put plenty of chlorine and Algicide in and keep the filter running, but we can’t figure out what’s wrong , here in the uk it’s been raining for the last few days so a cover has been on it , but still kept the filter running and keeping on top with the chemicals, took the cover off this morning and it’s green/light teal colour. We don’t have any shock and don’t want to drain the pool again due to the ground already being saturated from all the rain, and help/advice would be very helpful !! Xx
Check out our Emergency Algae video. It's a bit longer, but it's a complete walkthrough of what to do over the course of 2 days to clear up algae: ua-cam.com/video/pcOdX874vWY/v-deo.html
You need to add shock overnight when the sun is not out. Let it sit, and start your filter pump the following morning to circulate it. The algae should clear up. Make sure to use phosphate remover after the algae is gone. When algae is klled, it adds phosphate into the pool, causing a breathing ground for more algae to develop.
hi , thanks for your video ,thats realy help me to diy the pool .But now theres really big issue that is my sand filter backwash and rinse is low flow ,recirluc and wast is nnormal.i chang the new sand filter but the problem still not fixed . do you knwo whay i can do ?
Way too much for cartridge cleaning and replacing. Our filter takes 4 cartridges at a cost $480 Cdn with tax. I watch the flow for our waterfall and PSI, and then rinse them accordingly. Start of season is the worst, so I have our previous set to use for pool opening, then replace them after a week with the newer ones. Newer ones going strong on year 3 now following this method. Granted in Toronto area, we only run pool from May 15th to Sep 30th.
Hey Mr. Pool guy I need your help. My seven way valve system is eight years old. Now I can’t see the function on top. Like filter backwash waste… The system I have is a millennium System. Which I’m having problems finding parts, on the Internet. Can I use a Hayward part.can you give me advice. Thank you and have a nice evening. I hope there’s no typo
Thanks so much for these videos! We were expecting the pool guy to tile our painted pool and ..he isn’t. We had left the water go green due to lack of availability of products in winter and because we thought we were going to be letting it all out! So..long story short we are now back to your ‘ cloudy blue’! Took us over a week and pounds of shock etc! Added the clarifying liquid... and it’s slowly, slowly clearing. Sigh*. First time we’ve had this long a time to clear. So now I watched this video! Wow! Never knew about cleaning the filter just backwashing it! Btw ours is glass as we swapped out the sand two years ago. That made a difference to the water too. I live in northern Portugal and.....can’t find this filter cleaner locally on on Amazon etc! Is there something else I can look for?
So just bought a brand new sand filter and pump system. After initially backwashing, and rinsing, with the waste hose on, the pressure vague read in the green- 7 or 8 psi, after placing it on “filter” and blocking off the waste, the pressure now reads in the yellow, at 11 psi! I don’t like being in the “yellow”, I checked the return inlet to the pool, and made sure it wasn’t blocked, - the little glass bubble, I notice does have some air in it, not sure how to burp that- my pump does not have a valve near The gauge - I do think I need to replace the plunger valve on the inlet. It’s slightly leaking. Not terrible though. Any advice for me?
Hi. I have send filter but for some reason, backwash stopped working? Filtration works, but backwash and rinsing do not. Anyone has idea why backwash does not work? Many thanks. S.
I thought a DE filter did not need backwashing? I have a pool guy recommending replacing my sand filter with DE because 'it is a lot easier and better, and it does not need backwashing'. Can someone please confirm?
I have cartridge filters in my pool and them seem to clog up in a matter of days. The pool does not seem dirty otherwise some small sandy deposits from the dogs in and out of the pool. I have two sets of filters and it seems like they clog within days, when I pull them out they are not very dirty but after a wash they go back to normal pressure then right back up. I shock with Cal Hypo regularly but cant figure out why my filters cant last long. I bought a new set over the summer and went 2 months without cleaning them, now they wont make it a week. Is there something i can try? Maybe a muriatic acid soak?
One of my return jets has very low pressure only when running in ‘filter’ if I run in recirculate the pressure is fine in the poorly pressures return. Backwashing hasn’t seemed to help. It’s likely an issue with the sand filter ?
My sand filter is attached to my regular above ground pool filter...thing is im not sure if i should keep both filters on or only my sand filter ?..any ideas.. Btw my small filter is attached to my sand filter because of the way my AGP is fixed.
once a month for a DE filter cleaning? that is EXTREMELY excessive, and wasteful for buying DE. once every 6 months, minimum. I find that I can go sometimes 8 months plus between cleanings. in one month there is not even a noticeable difference in flow. After a fresh clean, I will get about 50GPM, by month 3 or 4, im only down to maybe 45GPM, unless it pollen season, than maybe 40GPM in 4 months. Although, I did find it interesting you said to backwash before cleaning the DE filter, I never thought of doing that since I clean it when necessary, and never backwash it. I might try that next time since I notice sometimes after a fresh DE fill, some debris blows back into the pool for a little while.
Yeah I've noticed a lot of the stuff they say to do is really excessive. Once a month seems reasonable for a commercial pool, for a residential, definitely not needed.
I recently cleaned my filter. Whenever I vacuum the pool, by the next day, dirt appears in the same place, near where the water comes in when the pump is on. Is it possible that there is dirt that's too fine for the filter to keep and it comes back into the pool? If so, is there a solution?
You may have to vacuum to waste, as the filter will only clean 15 microns and larger. I put a 3 way Jandy valve on the intake line so i can vacuum to waste if i need to. This of course will cause your water level to drop a few inches and you will have to top off the pool afterwards.
You left out a critical point. What happens when the water level is at or above the skimmer line and you remove the filter head. Water from the pool continues to gush in? 🤦🏻♂️
You should NEVER turn the pump on with the relief valve open. Open the valves to the pool with the relief valve open and let the air bleed out. Once water flows through the relief valve, close it, THEN turn on the pump.

Do you have a local pool or spa shop that does free water testing ? You could take a sample in and they would tell you what you need to balance it.
