Been doing this for 40 yrs. some are sitting on the shelf dated 1990. Every yr put up 6 qt jars. Never know when it could come in handy. Famous man (Red Green) once said: If a woman can’t find you handsome, she should find you handy !!! Thanx for an excellent presentation.
Mimansi Sethi. I’ve used this water that was over 30 yrs old. Never lost a sealed jar yet. Use your imagination for how to use the canned water up once you have opened the jar.
Add a clean white washcloth and a pinch of salt into the jars when canning water for wound care. Then you will have sterile saline water and a sterile wash cloth to wash off wounds.
My dad and I found old military style aluminum cans of emergency water up in the attic my grandpa must have stored away years ago before he passed. I guess prepping runs in the family. lol
Back Achers Homestead ......yes dehydrated water takes much less space, but when you rehydrate , it loses it’s sterile quality. You have to reboil it. Makes your dehydrating process a waste of time.
I've been canning for 30+ years and have always filled a canning jar with water and lid and used it to finish filling my pressure canner when I didn't have a full canner. This gives me extra sterile water for emergencies.
This is certainly worth considering. I have tried to store water in approved containers for long term storage. The water looked and smelled OK when pulled for use, 6-12 months later , but I noticed the containers had a slimy film building up on it, that I could FEEL...but not see. I did use the water so as not to waste it, but I ran it through a filter first. It could have been boiled before using, but I would not want to drink it otherwise. I also had just a regular plastic bottle with stored water in it. When I went to use it, I noticed a green fuzzy algae ball floating around inside of it! That water had been filtered before being put in that bottle. Boiling before storage would be the safest way to kill all microbes and bacteria.
Is funny how you been doing this for years and then people want to comment and school you like people seriously she's been doing this enough to say I know it's work for me this way... Keep up with what you do your really good to hear I'm learning from you.
At first I laughed at this.. But, after listening to your explanation for doing this.. I shut up and listened.. Excellent video. Water is sold in cans.. Flavored water. Thank you for sharing, this timely and needed video.. I've got to get going..
My husband made fun of me for canning water when I have an empty spot in the canner. However, he changed his mind this year when a tornado rolled through our area this year and left us without power for 2 days. Not just once but twice! Our property wasn't damaged either time, thank goodness. Since we are in the sticks, we get our water from a well. No power means no water, unless you were prepared like me and my crazy canned water. I also refill milk jugs and gallon vinegar bottles with water for flushing down the brown and washing dishes. I think getting a generator is looking pretty good to him...also my idea. If we had the generator I wouldn't need to store as much emergency water.
I also have a well. I did start canning water which really made a friend of mine think I had finally lost it. However, she lives in an apartment, everything is done for her etc. Now I have water for me and my pets for immediate use and don't have to open a gallon jug for what may be only a day or two.
@@gailoreilly1516 Yep, people thought I was nuts too. That's okay, I think they are nuts for not being prepared. Hubby is finally on board with my preps. He got a generator!
Careful on which jugs you use! Had a Walmart milk hug bust on me, poured water all over my pantry shelves. No, it wasn't from being too cold. This happened a couple of months ago. I'm going to start doing this way to save space!
I can’t express how thankful I am for the information you have been providing for the last two years that I’ve been following you. I did not panic because I had been stocking our pantry one extra item at a time. Thank you!
Now thanks to you I have another canning project to get done.LMHO!. Off I go in search of more quart jars. All of my larger jars have dry storage in them too. THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO.
Good info. It's what I do when there is a free space in the canner. It's also the only time I reuse lids. I figure I've lost nothing since it was extra space in the canner and the lid is essentially free. If It doesn't seal, then no big deal. I can always water plants or just drink it right away. Label and rotate just as you would for food.
OMG what a lightbulb moment! It never occurred to me that I could can water for pure water storage. I've been planning to go out and buy jugs to put tap water in but how long can that actually last? This water is guaranteed pure and sterile. Wonderful! Thank you!
A couple of things to take into account. 1 - a jar takes up the same amount of space whether it has water in it or it's empty. 2. Canned water is sterile. In an emergency situation that could be life-saving. 3. I use off-brand lids. If the lid fails it's not such a big deal. This is also a good way to reuse Lids that are not damaged. It's just water so if the lid fails no loss.
I love this idea. From California & years ago in the Northridge earthquake people had no power for weeks and were isolated as the freeway overpass was out. One of their big issues was no water
Excellent way to store jars. Especially when lids are re-used for this purpose (only). Water is ready for use with the next batch of canning. Especially, important when trying to save what's in the freezer following a grid-down event (hurricanes & ice storms here). My Presto canners need 3 quarts of water for processing. That leaves 4 quarts available for use, as needed, for a full canner of 7 quarts of whatever is in the jars. Since I normally don't add water for a second batch, the 2nd run of the day has 7 quarts f water available. Plus: The inside of the jars is clean. Wipe off the outside, with a damp cloth, to remove any dust. Think about how much water is saved when it isn't necessary to "hot, soapy, water to wash and rinse jars." Here, grid down, the well pump doesn't work! Shelf life of canned water: Properly canned, the water is safe for use, as is, as long as the seal isn't broken! Water, itself, does not have an expiration date. Dates stamped on bottle water is about how long the plastic bottle will last before it begins to leak. It's easy to see the distortion taking place in plastic bottles BEFORE the "Best By" date is reached. Highly recommend canning water to occupy the shelf space needed for storage of empty canning jars. Especially quarts and 1/2 gallon mason jars. If using new lids, designate them as WATER, so you can use them again for canning water.
I have been sterilizing water for a few years now. We have town water and it's horrible. I have a canner just for this. Never used for food. I fill the whole canner with water and pressure cook it. I have recycled wine jugs that I also sterilize. Fill the jugs with the sterilize water. I never tasted water soooooo good. Now I can enjoy water and drink it like I'm supposed to!

I am going to start doing this. I have been getting several different time for timing. Some say 10 min for quarts some say 20. I just want to be safe. God bless
I have done this to use up the extra space in a canner. I'll be doing this again throughout the winter. I also do this with dried beans when I can meat to use up the space. Plus they take the same amount of time. Thank you for this information.
They now tell us that anything you process for 15 minutes or longer the jars and in this case the water don't need to be pre sterilized. I have some very old water that I canned so I am glad that you said it is only good for a year. I have never used it so I better dump it and start again. Thanks for the video.
Please don't dump your water because it's been in a jar for more than a year. Properly canned, water is safe as long as the seal isn't broken!!! As long as the seal is intact, nothing can get into the jar to cause a problem. Water, itself, does NOT have an expiration date. Water, sold in plastic bottles, has a Best By date because the plastic will breakdown. I've had it to happen to me, with resulting damage. Another way to improve the taste of canned water is to pour it from one clean container to another, a couple of times. This will aerate the water, thus removing the flat taste.
I just put filtered water in my plastic orange juice containers (which I washed) then topped it off, then stored it in a very low light cool area. Worked for me
I pressure can purified water to fill my canner. Never know when you're going to need it. Being its purified water I can turn around and use it for canning as well if need be.
I use 7 gallon plastic cans. Water can be stored indefinately and doesn't need the same treatment as canned food. You can always use a water filter when drinking it, if you want to be sure there's no bacteria etc in the cans.
Storing water and food and dehydrating is one of the most important things to do now because when the electric goes out do you realize how much fuel it will cost to heat up to do canning to get it at the right temperature so do it now while you have the electric because down the line you may not even have running water and if you are in the position to where you cannot get clean fresh water what are you going to do think about how much water that you and your family uses a day that has to be purified and go from there
Unlike what a lot of the "experts" tell you, water does not expire. There is nothing in water that can go bad or expire. It is simply oxygen and hydrogen, period. As long as it is protected from light, heat, and is kept from becoming contaminated, it will last forever. I keep 55-gallon barrels of drinking water stored in a dark, cool, dry location that were sealed up 18 years ago, they are still as good and as safe to use today as they day I sealed them. When you go to drink it, simply pour it from one glass to another a couple times to re-oxigenate the water to get rid of the flat taste.
@@dollyhamilton6702 you purchase food-grade barrels and fill them yourself. They have two bungs (caps) that screw into the top of the barrel to seal them up. Don’t purchase used barrels unless you know for a fact that only food products were ever in them as chemicals can never be completely cleaned out of the plastic and can leech into the water contaminating it.
@@alro7892 if it is treated city water there is no need to do anything to it. Chlorine has been added to the water already by the city to kill any bacteria that may have been in it. I simply fill it from the tap using a drinking water safe hose made for RVs or boats. You do not want to use a regular garden hose as they contain lead and other carcinogenic chemicals which are very dangerous and will contaminate the drinking water.

Storing water and food and dehydrating is one of the most important things to do now because when the electric goes out do you realize how much fuel it will cost to heat up to do canning to get it at the right temperature so do it now while you have the electric because down the line you may not even have running water and if you are in the position to where you cannot get clean fresh water what are you going to do think about how much water that you and your family uses a day that has to be purified and go from there
It is good for empty jars keeps them clean too
Wow never thought of this. I am always needing water to clean my son's wounds with
I will be trying this.
I was just thinking about this today! How providential!
When you go to drink it, simply pour it from one glass to another a couple times to re-oxigenate the water to get rid of the flat taste.
where do you get 55 gal barrels of drinking water and how to you seal them?
@@dollyhamilton6702 you purchase food-grade barrels and fill them yourself. They have two bungs (caps) that screw into the top of the barrel to seal them up. Don’t purchase used barrels unless you know for a fact that only food products were ever in them as chemicals can never be completely cleaned out of the plastic and can leech into the water contaminating it.
@@WH6FQE hi just wanted to ask do you boil the water or just fill it from tap water?
@@alro7892 if it is treated city water there is no need to do anything to it. Chlorine has been added to the water already by the city to kill any bacteria that may have been in it.
I simply fill it from the tap using a drinking water safe hose made for RVs or boats. You do not want to use a regular garden hose as they contain lead and other carcinogenic chemicals which are very dangerous and will contaminate the drinking water.
@@WH6FQE thank you I also have a separate tap on my sink and fridge that has a filtering system that we use for drinking water so is that fine?
Love your crochet pot handle
Hard to do this later in 2020 with lids so scarce. If I had lids, I'd can more food. :)
Need a "Canning is my Jam" apron
I do can water to fill my canner. I did not know about "flat water". I did know with salt, it can be used as saline.
