Secret Singer's Diet The PROS Use - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
It's a known fact that nutrition is key for immune function in the overall health of our bodies, which certainly includes our voices.
It's also a known fact that there are some foods that are worse than others for singing.
For example, inflammatory foods can cause the vocal cords to become inflamed and not function at maximum capacity.
    Some of those foods include:
1.) Red meat and processed meats, including bacon, hot dogs, lunch meats, and cured meats
2.) Refined grains, including white bread, white rice, pasta, and breakfast cereals
3.) Snack foods, including chips, cookies, crackers, and pastries
4.) Sodas and other sweetened drinks
    5.) Fried foods.
In addition, other things, such as alcohol and caffeinated beverages, can dry out the vocal folds and turn them into a leathery state, inhibiting their ability for resiliency, flexibility, and elasticity, which is absolutely necessary for good phonation or sound.
Many people have difficulties with dairy-related products, as they can produce considerable amounts of mucus that also can cause inflammation and keep the cords from having good cord closure.
In this video, we discuss some of the best ways to keep our vocal folds healthy and able to perform with accuracy and consistency, night after night.

I've been on a plant based diet for almost 2 years now and I haven't got sick in this whole time. Not even a cold, not even a runny nose, nothing. I exercise, I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, I don't touch alcohol whatsoever and I hardly ever drink coffee. My voice is strong and so is my health.

Ken! Everything you said is spot on. I’ve been singing professionally for many many decades. I never eat close to a performance, it causes too much mucus. I also like a slightly empty stomach so that I could support my diaphragm. I only drink water! That’s it. I drink a lot during performance to keep the cords hydrated. If your body is tired, your vocal cords are automatically tired. Years ago I changed my diet completely. I eat primarily of plant based. I have eliminated everything dairy. It’s so important what you talked about.

I completely agree, especially with the tired point. You can do all the right things but if you’re tired it’s very hard to have the voice run efficiently for a performance

I'm so happy you are using your platform to promote WPBD. I've been full Vegan since 2015 and quit smoking in 2017 and my voice has improved greatly! After 30 yrs of smoking I was feeling sick after eating healthy for at that time 2 yrs. I quit smoking very quickly took 2 weeks for the cravings to vanish. Anyone can follow this diet. It is so easy!! I went full Vegan for the animals too. 😊❤

Eu tinha uma vida super saudável. Jogava futebol, praticava musculação e tocava clarinete e tomava cachaça as vezes😂😂.

Sludge can't be good long term for the engine. Discernment is essential with a balanced diet. Personally I'm more of a keto hybrid carnivore diet type of person. Exercising is clearly essential to the performance singer diet. I love water!

I’ve been intermittent Fasting for 5 weeks now. When I do eat it’s plant based and pro gut health foods. And I’ll even throw in meat in there but not all the time.
Interestingly enough, I’m not a vocal centered musican, more so I write and play guitar the most out of all. Throughout the first days of the intermittent fast, one of the meals I ate was some great, expensive local Elk meat. Man, not only was it ridiculously healthy and good, but when I got home I started practicing vocals and I had never heard my self sing the way I did after eating that steak.
    You are what you eat.

I have a pretty good healthy diet, no junk food, no soda, and no alcohol or sweets....but my main concern is how the heck do I sing with post nasal drip and the constant clearing of my throat? I can sing very well and occasionally through a song, while I am performing I clear my throat and it gets rather annoying. Is there a way to try and work around this so it isn't obvious when I perform?

I read an interview with Anne Hathaway where she described eating a salmon steak. She was vegan for a long time but when she ate the salmon she she said her brain sparkled and she felt like her mind was like a computer rebooting. Of course pizza (glue) and McDonald's are bad and veggies better, but I would feel even better on a steak or sardines than a bowl of pasta garbage. I did brown rice heavy diet for a year and felt good but nothing like going keto. When body switches from burning glucose to burning fats the mental improvement is drastic. Ketosis is like magic for the brain and nerves. However when I have milk I can tell it must be bad for singers lol.

I can say how I check my diet.
I do a lot of sounds that need a very thin precission. And I started exercising. So if I sound less controlled or I have a hard time exercising. I'll change my diet. The moment you start to work with youre body in any way (singing, dancing, beatboxing, martial art I don't care what it is for now.) You'll notice how good or bad you're diet is. (I take ballett dancers out. Because they often have such a high psychological pressure it even leads to anorexia.)

Ken, could you please expand on what foods can lead to mucus production? I'm assuming dairy based foods, but I don't know. Also, are there any issues with caffeine consumption? Thanks!

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  Рік тому +5

Caffeine (coffee, tea, soda), bread, milk, sugar, cheese, eggs, corn, processed meats, fast food, chocolate, alcohol and if you have histamine sensitivity these foods could trigger a reaction (mucus production): Some types of fish; tuna, mackerel, salmon, pike, bananas, strawberries, yogurt, grapes, citrus, tomato, spinach, mayonnaise, sauerkraut.

I have a question. I really want to sing well but I don't hear the things you hear when you are talking about singing. How did you learn to hear "ping", "twang", "and "brightness" or if someone is singing from their throat or singing forward? How do I know if I am doing it correctly if I don't hear it from someone else? Would you possibly do a video (or series of videos) showing what these things sound like when done correctly followed by what it sounds like when you don't do it correctly? Maybe also with some clips from popular songs showing the technique? Maybe you already have that and I haven't found it.

You gotta live like an athlete when you are a singer,so get bed early and dont drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes. Im not in any band at the moment but i do eat healthy ketogenic diet, yes i eat meat and eggs and fish with little bit of vegetables. Also you need to drink plenty of water. Keto helps with inflammation so its good way of eating.
