Love your videos about AHQ! ...I’ve been reading the rules as I’m building my set and man!....I gotta say that this game is standing so tall above everything I’ve played to date!! ...maybe my DC experience is limited but this game is so versatile and accessible...I’m getting so excited to get my project finished and log some play time. Best dungeon crawl ever right now!

Huge fan of AHQ and bought it when it was released way back when. It has sat on my self for years since then and about 9 years ago I bought all the metal skaven and painted them for it. Again, I only managed to fist play the game at that time but never finished the quest for the Shattered Amulet. I am now planning to play it solo and film it over my holidays once I've finished painting the heroes. I look forward to watching your video later tonight when painting and thanks for making this :)

Always nice to see a new video of someone sharing their love for Advanced Heroquest. I am right there with you man! It is also my favorite of the big three. I own it but I made my own tiles for it out of inch thick insulation foam. They have magnetic bottoms to place on a large piece of sheet metal and the option to use walls if I want. For wizard I use the Warhammer Quest style of play with my own spells like, force push or just simple things like magic missle. Roll for power on d6 ect..also want to make a deck of cards for random dungeons. Passage, passage with 1 door, passage with 2 doors, passage with monsters..
I could go on and on. I loved your video. Cheers!

@@TheDungeonDive Yeah, I really like them too, just as with the Warhammer Quest tiles. There's something to their simplicity that's refreshing, and they still look very cool and atmospheric. I think like you've said at times, how sometimes anything is nothing, speaks to this. Many of these tiles are just that. Tiles, empty rooms, sometimes a little features here and there but not many. It's nice not having super crowded and busy artwork and scenes sometimes, because yes, sometimes there would probably be empty or nearly bare rooms in abandoned dungeons and fortresses, especially if they had been left there for centuries. It's a feel that I don't get in many games currently and I realize I really want to play something that will give me that armosphere.

I completely agree wirh your starting sentence: the reason of the failure of this game was the lack ov variety in the box. Nonetheless, the rule sistem is AWESOME and I created up to 24 different classes for heroes. If you collected minis for years and you have Heroquest too, the fun is endless. I deeply love this game and I gave unforgettable days to a bunch of friends. Lastly, I personally don't agree with the idea of a random generated dungeon. I prefer to draw dungeons by miself. Usually, a total point value of 4 times the total amount of fate points of the heroes is ok to give a though but possible adventure. I also adjusted here and there some minor rules, but the system encourages this, and that's one of the reasons I love it.

My favourite dungeon crawl. The D12 system works very well. I much prefer this to Warhammer Quest. I like the realism of having to buy ingredients for magic spells and when they are gone they are gone. In Warhammer Quest you just keep endlessly rolling for winds of magic to do your spells. I also really like that you don`t know how big each level will be when you enter it(apart from last level)

AHQ was a vehicle to cash in on the popularity of the first HQ and cross sell Warhammer Fantasy Battle minis. That been said...AHQ is Amazeballs and totes amazing. I kinda wish there were more narratives in the rule book but still its wonderballs.
Paint the minis to maximise the game. If you watch youtube tutorials you dont have to be a great painter which is handy becuase I am awful :)

It's a great game, for sure. I'm a totally OK painter, I just don't have the time to. It's the very, very, very, very last way I want to spend my free time. :) I can do the Dungeon Dive, or paint, and I get way more hobby satisfaction out of doing the Dungeon Dive. :)

Not sure. WHQ has a lot of cards, but AHQ has a lot of tiles. Maybe a bit easier.

  • @knghtbrd

I played HQ as a child but never owned it. Bought my copy a decade ago. Couldn't afford the expansions even then, but I wanted them. Then … I saw AHQ and the paint set for an amazing price! I grabbed it.Shipping was well more than the cost of the game, but … I had something kinda unique and unplayed. It's sat unplayed because five minutes with the rules told me it was a different game entirely. But you're right-it's an incomplete game that presumes you have a copy of HeroQuest at the least, or a pile of Citadel minis and are prepared to buy more. It's basically incomplete as sold.
You've given me reason to dig it out and see what it's like. I wonder if a program to do the auto-generation would make sense? Probably not if you've made heavy changes to it…but maybe even if you have it could be easy to modify the auto-roll tool? Hmm.
I don't regret buying my copy of AHQ, as I've said a couple of times lately. I don't have the expansion, but apparently if I've got the rules I don't need it. Still, I kinda wish there was a comprehensive site like Ye Olde Inn for AHQ. I never found one, anyway. I'm a bit of a preservationist and the best I've found are low-res, blurry scans. I can scan the base game, but I haven't got the expansion to scan. It'd also be cool if there was a source where fan-created tiles and quests were posted. The Inn has spoiled me for base HQ I guess. 😉

I wonder if GW's intention with Advanced Heroquest was...
    a) get folks to reuse miniatures from Heroquest
    b) get folks to buy new miniatures from their catalogue/store to replace the monster tokens
    c) offer players AH as a 'hobbyist expansion' to Heroquest whilst also offering it as a standalone game to newbie players
    d) just misguided - they f'd up on the UX (user experience)
Funny to think that Heroquest ultimately ended up inspiring the Sadler Bros to design AltarQuest, whereas Advanced Heroquest is clearly the more beloved fan experience.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  4 роки тому +2

I think A-C are all likely, with the focus on B and C. This really should have been marketed as an "advanced" expansion for Heroquest, because that's what it is. I bought it used, knowing that, and so I knew what I was getting going in. If I had bought it not knowing that, I would have been very, very disappointed with what is included in the box.

    • @cybertrophic

My understanding is that it was basically a big expansion pack to bridge between the kid-friendly Heroquest boardgame and the far deeper hobbyist Warhammer range at the time: Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Warhammer Quest and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. GW definitely figured people would use the existing citadel miniature range to populate the dungeons they created.

Our newest additions were a "greed" treasure card that makes you immediately draw two more treasure cards at your own peril. The crossbow was the worst bit of game design in the original heroquest system lol

I keep going back and forth on when new portions of dungeon are meant to be generated by the GM. By my reading, I'm relatively sure that new sections are laid at the end of all heroes movement and actions, prior to the GM phase. Others I have played with generate the new rooms or corridors as they are encountered.

What i don t like in advanced Heroquest is that you roll one thousand dices, it s boring after 1 hour of that treatment... and sometimes you can have great adventures or depending only on luck only empty rooms that lead to close the box very quickly...
i think that advanced HQ have great background more adult than MB heroquest and can be a good intro to roleplaying but no furnitures, only skaven as bad guys and game time is too long.
