Lovely runs. That submerged branch was the undoing of you Davie. Great feeling to be in a big one - if only for a while - and on a 4wt rod also! You’re right - we miss a lot more trout using wet-fly - as the fish are facing upstream and we’re inclined to pull it too fast out of their mouth. My dad (RIP) - taught us as beginners - to keep the rod tip ‘higher’ and let the fly swallow by ‘dipping’ the tip on a bite for a second longer than on drys - before engaging when fishing wets. Thanks - great videos.

Enjoyable to be fishing alongside you in this video Davie, especially swinging a caddis down and across. Down here in the South West ,the water has been over 16 Degrees too warn and trout a little stressed , also the fly life has diminished after the great abundance of hatches through May /early June . Small Caddis are starting to show late afternoons , bring on a few days of rain to liven the trout up a little.

I know the sound of me walking is a bit loud at times as the GoPro I am using has three mics and two are on the bottom of the camera. Because of this I am looking at recording the sound on a separate mic although I am planning on doing it next season as I've still got a lot to learn as I haven't done much filming outside...I know you follow me and I do appreciate your feedback and kind words..

@@DavieMcPhail Good morning, Davie. I certainly DO follow you, and need to say what an outstanding contribution you make to the global fly-tying community. That community probably amounts to (global guess) 200,000. Beyond that, the trickle-down of skills that start on your channel must be quite remarkable. Your films with last for generations of fishermen. That's a heck of a legacy. Oliver Edwards, Barry Ord Clark, and Davie McPhail comprise the Fly Tying Pantheon.

Thanks for the wonderful videos, #DavieMcPhail I've learned so much from your tying and fishing! Your 'McPhail Caddis Pupa' from a ways back is still one of my favourite ties.
I've noticed on quite a few videos that many folks from Scotland, Scandinavia and upper parts of Europe usually fish on river left ( flow towards the back of the casting shoulder for a RH caster ) instead of casting a bit more upstream along the bank from river right, then getting a longer dangle after the rod tip passes by.
Am I just imagining things? 😄 Do you prefer fishing river left? I always find it a bit awkward to do so unless I'm swinging flies with a two-handed setup. Perhaps it was the only access?
Thanks again, and keep up the good work. Tight lines! 👏

I may be in a minority of one but I think you would be better to break these OB’s into shorter episodes (e.g. this one might have been three). @@DavieMcPhail Hi Davie Thanks for your reply and link, I checked it out, interesting this is a new on me.
I asked because rods and reels have been in the forefront for me recently as I decided to go back to old school to a medium action rod set up. And learned a very important lesson. You probably know what I am about to tell you so this is more for your
      readers than you personally.
Short history is that I like many went over to fat action some time ago but never really felt comfortable, Trading off delicate
presentation and ease of roll cast in return for distance and wind knots isn't for me.
In my learning journey I discovered that if you have a fast action rod then you have to use a weight forward line, weight forward line doesn't work on a medium action rod, the line collapses at the business end .. And the opposite is also true.. its not possible to use a double taper line on a fast action rod... the line will stick to the rod rings ( guides).
I chose in the end for a Vision rivlermaniac rod medium action and a Vosseler reel. And its all I could ever wish for in a rod and reel. But like many things in life its personal to the practitioner.
      Thanks again Davie,Tight lines.

Hi Davie, I have just found your channel and really enjoyed this video, it’s great to see truly wild trout coming to the fly… I’m based in the south east of England and become spoiled with the stocked ‘lumps’ in some of the renowned waters down here, I used to love fishing the Scottish rivers when I lived north of the border 40 years ago…
I started my UA-cam channel about 3 years ago and I would love to know how you developed your own following… 108k is a significant number, I would really appreciate advice and suggestions as to how I can grow my own channel. That Salmon / Grilse strike was amazing I bet your heart rate jumped a bit… I look forward to watching more of your videos, if you do get a chance, can you watch a few of mine and tell me what you think.

    Hi Davie,
another great video and what lovely water for the wet fly! Can I make a suggestion for a video? Some years ago I read a book [of which there are many] called Matching the Hatch co-written by Cyril Bennett and Peter Lapsley. I appreciate that every river differs from the next, but would you consider sometime running through the various Dry's Wet's and Nymphs you more commonly use on the Doon and Ayr. All we fishers are concerned I'm sure about the decline of certain fly life but there are some patterns in each category that have things in common on most waters. The fish at 42min 50 looked a clonker. Cheers Davie
