- So stoked to (nearly) complete my SCX10ii Cherokee XJ build!! If you've been following along, you know this has been on my bench for a while. In this video, I go over all of my set-up tips and upgrades to get this rig ready for Axialfest 2019, including installing my Tekin motor/esc combo, adding some sweet Knight Customs scale details, and doing a few mods to my RC4WD metal beadlocks.

Great vid! Just a little shock tip tho: preload shouldn't really be used to change ride height, it's real use is to let the shock have full travel without bottoming out - set your preload so when you drop the truck from an inch or so off the ground the shocks almost bottom out but stop just shy.
To change the ride height you can change the shocks for longer/shorter bodied ones for larger height changes, and get aftermarket shock mounts with multiple mounting points for smaller changes.
If you use preload to set your ride height then your truck will be stiff when you raise it and soft when you lower it, and if you think about it thats just not how your shocks are meant to work.
@Rc Guru I do wonder which is more ironic your statement or your name.
The "pre tinning" of the motor terminals show the tin in a round ball on top of the metal.
This is a indication of a "cold joint" as a result of the metal not getting hot enough.
The resulting joint is brittle and unreliable.
Few steps to avoid this; get the biggest size soldering tip that fits your iron and change the tip depending on the kind of work you are going to do.
The additional mass will store more heat giving more power to heat up the part you want to solder.
A good joint has it edges flowing outwards not looking like a drop of water with surface tension.
Also avoid inhaling the smoke even its the the soldering tin is the zinc tin alloy (instead of lead tin) the burned off flux is still not healthy.
If you use lead based soldering "tin" inhaling is even more dangerous (potential brain damage in extreme cases
Absolutely, and flux is your friend...
Use a window fan sucking air out from the solder work away from your face.

Right?! When I was searching for parts for the Xj, it was hard to tell if the parts were for a full size jeep or the scale jeep. Prices aren't too different!!! ;)

Im not an expert by any means but some sand paper to those motor terminals before hand helps the solder stick. I used to build my own NiCd / NiMh battery packs back in the day and at first could never get it to stick without getting it way too hot. Also flux helps not just the flux core but painting actual flux on the terminals. Nice build!

I did the same thing with the hex adapters . Start with one the same size as the hole . And make sure to put the rim in a vis to hold it for you and slow is key

That is a tough and good looking jeep, Hayley. I am concerned about one thing though. I would strongly recommend to use heat shrink tubing to insulate and protect the soldered connections, in case one of them should ever break loose. Cold joints is a common soldering problem, causing unreliable joints. Some extra insulation can help avoid short circuits, and a possible fire, in case one of the connections should breake loose. There is also a lot of guides to excelent soldering on the Internet, helping you to achieve the ideal solder joint.

I know you talk rcs slot so I just wanted to share how someone described cogging to me to help me understand it as it may help others. Basically imagine pedalling your bike where the freewheel is kinda grabbing half the time so it's not very controlled. With that I was able to picture the rotor slipping as cogging does

One bit of advice for soldering.
Heat the wire or pad up and touch the solder to the wire or pad instead of the solder tip.

Find some shims to go between the hex nut pins and the bearing to pick up the wheel slack makes the rig feel more stable
Very nice build. I always wanted to do one of those, but what $$ i have is in my '99 Cherokee Xj that I've had for 18 years. And yeah, it's lifted, on BFG KO2 MTs. Only things yours is missing, to scale, is exhaust, gas tank (plenty covered with skid) and the customary Rust, lol. In all honesty, it looks awesome!

Jeeps looking good! I’m pretty confident those tires your using are the axial kit tires. The Proline’s look a little different on the sidewall and are a bit smaller in overall height.

Just as an aside the 1/8th scale motors (4268) are 6 pole and more efficient when you run a sensored setup however they are a lot heavier so the cg is affected considerably. But I love being able to go a mile or more on a 2200mah pack and over 4 miles on my 8000mah. Who says hiking can't be fun.
Just 4 on 8000? I get nearly 6 on a 5000

The motor solders are cold, you must heat a bit more and allow the solder to flow to have a good reliable solder joint.

Holmes Hobbies Revolver is a brushless sensorless motor that doesn't cog and has great low speed control and awesome torque.
If you end up having to enlarge a lot of holes look into step drill bits. They are multiple sized drill bits in one and some step up sizes by 1/64's of an inch. Harbor freight sells them in a 3 pack.

No venting, beadlocks seal them off. Plus I drive in water
GRC makes a 3d printed part that covers the hole in between the rear fenders, ads a bit more strength to the chassis as well as scale appearance

Looking good so far. Just an fyi, there are some uncensored motors that work wonderfully in rc rigs with the correct esc. One setup I can think of off the top of my head is Holmes hobbies revolver motors and a castle sw4.
