I haven't seen many vocal coaches, apart from Kardavox, react to Cattel Decap, and I think it's a shame because Travis Ryan's vocals are some of the most interesting in extreme metal. Thanks for doing this one!

You're correct in that lyrically it's not just a criticism, but a warning. Thematically, this song and much of the new album is a cautionary tale of humanity having already gone too far - a theme explored gradually over the past few albums - and polluted the planet and destroyed our species. New insect-like beings have evolved and hatched like larvae from our remains - a fictional terrible next step in evolution. Travis' lyrics and wordplay has advanced so much over the past several albums and he has such incredible range. He is a massive inspiration to a new generation of vocalists!

Travis is one of the most underrated vocalists in metal. There are tracks where he does some truly clean Singing vocals as well. So versatile

I’ve been a metalhead for years and I admit I get so bored with alot of vocals but Travis is probably the one of the few vocalists actually pushing the limits. The melodies he’s added are just beautiful. I need more lol
If you like his style you might like full of hell, it’s borderline noise in some tracks, the rest is grind/death but the vocals are all over the place

Cattle Decapitation has always had the theme of Misanthropy. Monolith of Humanity touched on the depraved habits of man.
Starting with The Anthropocene Era, they delved more into our destructive ways, specifically toward the environment and ourselves.
The next album, Death Atlas, took place in a collapsing world and ended with its destruction.
This latest album, Terrasite, is a continuene of that world. Post-apocalyptic human, evolved as an insect human hybrid. A warning to stray from our current course.
Travis Ryan has always been one of my favorite vocalists. His growls are unmatched. The harmonic vocals in Cattle Decaps music are a relatively recent evolution.
Back when I started listening to them To Serve Man was their latest release, and they had a much MUCH different sound.
Over the years they have released (Over a dozen?) new albums, and they take steps to evolve and push their sound along with them. "The Anthropocene Extinction" is probably the pinnacle of their content for me. I have listened to that album hundreds of times by now, and it's dark and brooding. Their musical prowess has evolved, but their disdain for humanity has never faltered. I for one share similar sentiments.
Cattle is my all time favorite band and they have been for many many years. Your view on metal at the end is spot on and i love it haha.. Great reaction
Travis is a top 5 metal vocalist to me. He can do so many things with his voice. Truly jaw dropping stuff!

They've been top 100 billboard multiple times since kingdom. I think they are doing well, considering they can afford to live in California and are signed to one of the biggest metal labels.
I agree, the clean vocals are very pulled back. You have a great ear, and obvious appreciation, for somebody who isn't into this kind of music. Your constructive criticism is lovely.
As a lifelong fan of extreme metal, I can say Travis has the most unique style.
I dont actually know what he does but when I'm at home in my garage jamming to these songs it feels to me like its a fry scream with him laying an actual high scream on top of that

For me the most interesting Cattle Decap songs to analyze are Kingdom Of Tyrants, Regret and the Grave, and Death Atlas.

Ken, remember Pain Remains? There's one song by Cattle Decap that I think really everyone should hear. It's Death Atlas and while it's not as long or sad as Pain Remains was, it's definitely a very intense experience that makes you think. It's about the possible future of humanity but I will leave rest of the interpretation up to you :)
There's already unofficial lyrics videos on YT (I recommend the 7:54 long one) and there's also a lot to unpack on the vocals there.
Death Atlas, Pacific Grim and Just Another Body are much sadder than Pain Remains, without the cheesiness that the Lorna Shore track has, as they're much more miserable and less romantic. Death Atlas literally has a funeral doom metal outro, and Just Another Body conveys grief in a very real way, kinda like Memento Mori by Architects or The Pecan Tree by Deafheaven: all three are dedicated to deceased individuals (Just Another Body is about Gabe Serbian, RIP).

I’ve waited to see someone do cattle, even with the layering they capture this amount of atmosphere and size in a live setting which is not something I thought possible. They’re dropping a new album this month. Gotta love the tech metal, it’ll be interesting to see you breakdown Archspire or JFAC after this 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Cattle Decapitation is my favorite metal band and has been since 2005. I am always super excited to hear the low vocals, but Travi's always has at least one great high vocal moment, usually on one of the album singles, like he does here at 3:10. There are at least one of those highs on the last 3 albums as well, usually within the single. Great Reaction!!
Awesome to see cattle decap presented here. What they are doing is important not only in metal but focusing on vocals travis is reshaping the idea of what death metal is... hes melodic and that is not something people into this type of music have historically accepted but overwhelming have with this band. That man does stuff that i have genuinely never heard pulled off so effectively in death metal. Great band...
Can't believe I missed this one. Cattle Decap are one of my favourite bands and I NEVER see reactions, LOVE that you did this song in particular because its definitely a favourite. Your Disposal is also another banger by them that showcases Travis' 'clean' screaming vocals if you ever decide to react to an older one of theirs. Thank you for this!

Cool analysis. Always dig your content so it's great when you touch on an artist who I really love, like Cattle Decap! Travis is a phenomenal vocalist and "goblin cleans", which I've heard them called, are really wild and super unique.
One thing I noticed and truly enjoyed is how much you seem to genuinely be enjoying the music, where you even paused and expressed how you just wanted more. Love this video and reaction!
I sadly have just began listening to Cattle Decapitation, but I will take it as a blessing as I now have several hours of this band’s music that I can explore! I think as it currently stands, this is definitely going to be my favorite band of 2023 and probably be at the top of my list for years to come.
Great take on Cattle Decaps song, I always like to describe them as "metal's angry vegans" (mind you Travis Ryan, vocals, and Josh Elmore, lead guitar, are the only original members of the band that are also still vegan) as most of their song deal with the ideas of how humans are ruining nature and animal rights, etc. Travis Ryan in interviews he's described his vocals as two different forms, one being "goblin singing" and the other "guttural growls".

Yes, he overdubs himself doing highs and lows. This is a common technique in extreme metal genres. I noticed when they play live he uses two mics to be able to pull off some extra effects. At least when I saw them so don't quote me on that last part as gospel.

Travis is a true poet
If we are living in the Anthropocene era with it's six greatest mass extinction, caused by us, intentionally for short term profit (I say intentionally because we know that studies done by oil companies themselves showed exactly what was going to happen and a choice was made to ignore it), then I think it's fair to say that Travis is not wrong. But also it's art and it's melodic, tight, and expresses the frustration I have had with the things humans have done. It feels good to hear it out to music. There's a song on the Death Atlas 2019 album with the lyric "f*** the future, f*** all mankind" and that still makes my day 😂. However on the flip side that same year Devin Townsend put out Empath and I think they complimented each other where he speaks of the darkness but shows a way to save the world. It's real but also has a sense of hope.
I'm a fan of both the hope and the acceptance of humanity's role in an unimaginable number of species dying out completely because of us.
There is definitely a vocal over dub. But to my knowledge, Travis Ryan does NOT use ANY synthetic vocal distortions. This IS his voice. I just saw them live last Monday and it was beautiful brutality. If you want to see more of his range as far as his vocals, try the song "Solastalgia". It's one of their better tracks and they released a video about 3 weeks ago as well as a "making of Solastalgia" video. It will show u everything he went through to get his vocals right on that track.

Travis is the only vocalist I have seen, aside form Ben Duerr, that isn't shy about his mouth shapes. Travis' approach to "clean" vocals is probably the best sound

I wish I was able to see humans as positively as you. Anyway, Travis' vocals are what drew me to the band, he's SO delicious to listen to. If I gathered from comments this is not exactly music you'd pick up otherwise, thumbs up for your respectful and open approach to it, especially considering this is pretty heavy. I was recently told by someone that metal has a "bad vibe", so... 😄

Some Greek guy said that misanthropy comes from having too much hope and expectation for people in the first place. So when the reality shock comes, i.e. the complexity that no one is fully good nor fully bad, one is not prepared and turns to generalized hatred. But I think Cattle Decap's message is on point because the ecological apocalipse is not far.

6:34 there's almost always some church reverb added with metal vocals. Don't get me wrong, these guys can scream and growl like crazy, but it just doesn't sound quite "right" without the reverb.
The greatest irony of technical death metal is that most of the lyrics are intentionally pretty horrible. This is sort of a genre staple. It’s almost done to an overtly humorous effect by many bands because it’s a bit of a contest to see how stupidly dark the lyrics can get before they get removed from some platform like iTunes.

There is a Brazilian band called "Black Circle" that besides being very good, their vocalist has the same voice as Eddie Vedder which makes their Pearl Jam covers perfect!....
Vedder himself praised it and his wife even did a live with them.

Ken, I recommend you one band (although I will give two different names but the same singer) and their performance of famous songs. If you like it, you will look (or we listeners will look for them) also their original works (one of my favorites band)
Nevermore - "The sound of silence" (by Simon & Garfunkel)
Sanctuary - "White Rabbit" (by Jefferson Airplane)
both songs are covers of course, but I recommend you these two, so that you start with something you might know.

While I do think the vocals are a quite overproduced in this particular song, keep in mind Travis is almost 50 years old. When he was Will Ramos's age, he could replicate live what he does in the studio (even better). Also keep in mind that he created the vocal style that Will uses and is now know for. So Travis has nothing to demonstrate. Cattle are legends and pioneers of the genre, they are old and doing their best. Will is young and a copy of Travis's prime. Ofc Lorna Shore is more recognized as the kids nowadays like that deathcore thing.

I've seen these guys play twice this year already. Travis sounds exactly like this live as well. The whole band is tight, better and better with each album.
The world, the whole universe is based on black and white, before the light appeard was dark. And in the world there are is eternal fight between good and bad - sait and evel in every aspects. And there's always that balance and that gonna be forever. We are just in between. Metal music is real. It talks about the dark side mostly - sadness, cruel, death, black and so on, what people avoid, try to pretend. Metalheads keep their eyes opened and understand things better, but they are the best haearted people also who have much to say. Don't forget that roses besides they are beautiful has spikes as well.😊
