Travis Ryan's voice is something else. His "melodic harsh vocals" are unique and keep me coming back to this band. Plus their lyrical content, while grim, gives me hope humanity some day can change their destructive path.
His ability to go from the death metal growl to high is something else. I remember seeing them circa “To Serve Man” and just being floored by his vocal acrobatics.
Cattle Decap is one of the foundations for modern extreme metal. Travis is one of the most vocally creative vocalists and his lyrics have long been among the best written in the entire scene.
I have had so much trouble deciding which album is my favorite as everything from Harvest Floor on is just incredible! One of those bands that doesn't know how to put out a bad album.
Just saw them live last Friday and they were absolutely mind-blowing; amazing energy, sound great, crowd was nuts. They opened for Dark Funeral and it was a little awkward because there was a HUGE lineup to their merch booth while there were a lot less people for the other bands 😅
I saw them at The Summer Slaughter Tour 2007 in a very small venue in mtl. I didn't know the band and Travis was something different. They played with decapitated with Vitek (4 months before death) and Necrophagist with Marco Minnemann on drums. Insane show.
I saw them a few months ago, was in the pit and it was the best concert of my life. (i've been to more than i can remember) cant wait to see them again this November.
I remember suggesting Cattle Decap when I first followed your channel (a couple months after you started I think) and TBH, I'm glad you waited this long. That band is a hard listen for people whose ear is not attuned to extreme metal. We had to wait, but at least now your reaction does them justice. Thanks for doing this!
This band got me into death metal. The goblin vocals were so unique they pulled me in, but the music really grew on me. Thanks for the insight always enjoy it~!
I’m still here!! This album is a serious contender for album of the year for me. I saw them for the first time back in December. Totally blew me away. Instant fan.
For me what really brings Cattle Decap to the forefront is the lyrics and the intensity of the music in conjuction, the lyrics are always against humanity and our world but the music fits so well, they have a few songs this one included where the chorus or the ending parts in other songs just feel like the world is ending and everything is dying, they just mix so well, Terrasite was a blast to listen and the lyrics even more.
I used to get caught up in nihilistic lyrics. MGLA is my favorite. One thing to keep in mind though is that actual evil controls media right now. Hollywood, Netflix, Disney, Metal Blade Records etc... the fact cattle decapitation is allowed on UA-cam means their lyrics and messaging is what the people they appear to be singing about want you to hear. they want you trapped in a solo world of pain and hatred, because you are bo threat to them like that. this is getting too long, but basically cattle decapitation are pussies behind the illusion of crazy hatred and beautiful chaos. they will never have lyrics that attack actual power.
Hope you get around to watching Solastalgia! You will enjoy it equally as much as Scourge of the Offspring. Ryan’s vocals, all the instrumental decisions in every second is so powerful, profound and primal. I love Cattle Decapitation so much. Always love the reviews/reaction, too! Still here, and Alright 😄🤘🏻
Man you always surpise me with your uploads. Again, I really appreciate you diving into the metal genre. I never really knew of this band but I recently fell in love with the video for it. Then of course i saw your review and that always brings me joy. Thanks again!
PLEASE check out more of their stuff! Anything off of this album (Terrasite) or their last album (Death Atlas) is definitely amazing. I'd encourage you to look into the overall themes of their last few albums as well. They evolve like chapters in a book so to speak. Like everyone else is saying, Travis Ryan's vocal ability is amazing. Devin Townsend even said he's a big fan!
Wow, I've never thought of the Devy comparison, but I think you're right. Obviously, they got their own unique sounds and whatnot. But, like the energy behind it, I can totally see what you mean. They have a way of doing powerful, clean-sounding melodic vocals that are still actually pretty aggressive and raspy. Super cool stuff. You definitely gotta check out some more of their material. Most of their sound is like this, but typically a little more on the brutal side. But, their most popular songs are usually the ones that really expand on that melodic side. I'd recommend doing some of those. I'd say Time's Cruel Curtain, Death Atlas, Just Another Body, Kingdom Of Tyrants, Your Disposal or one of the worst timed songs in history: Bring Back The Plague (it came out late 2019, WOOF). The latter is one of their best though, imo, as a dude who loves both their brutal and melodic sides lol.
still and always will be here Geebz! as a drummer of 25 years, I pay special interest to your views on the many aspects you touch on, which drives me to put extra thought into my own practices. Love the idea of the Twice Baked too. Something new always comes out of each listen, its a great new approach for the vid's. Stay well!
@Key of Geebz, huge adjustment for me as a metalhead to appreciate Cattle Decapitation. Their last 5 albums are knarly, heavy, unreal, awesome!!! Checkout more!!!
I saw them live earlier this year. They're absolutely bonkers live. I'm a huge fan of Travis' vocal style with the melodic parts in between his signature gurgling. The first three albums sound way different from this. They're all great musicians, too.
I like the new format of ''Not a first time reaction''. Also very pleased to see you react to Cattle Decapitation, they have a very unique sound within the genre and your commentaries were very interesting. Would you ever consider, reacting to smaller bands? I think production wise you might like the song '' We can't exist in this word of war'' by Unbreakable Hatred. That song, even comming from a mostly obscure band, (although they toured Europe, Canada and the USA with household names like Nile, Origin and Suffocation) somehow found it's way into my top 5 best death metal song ever. Keep up the good vibes!!🤙🤙
The expressions you make are priceless very new to you definitely you honestly you driving with the windows rolled up and enjoying the music like you do I would think your listening to classical music then suddenly troll the windows down and it’s fuckin cattle dude hahaha fuck yeah keep it up thanks for the video
I thought this was really good. Cattle Decapitation are brutal & very precise with their musicality. I dug the harsh & melodic aspects of Ryan's vocals, the guitarists are machine-like percussive, and the drumming is just insanely wonderful. Hi Geebz🔥 I'm still here.😉😊
It's a concept album of sorts, it takes off right where the last album left off. I'm a recent fan, the last 2 albums really..so happy with the mix/mastering.
as far as extreme songs go, I don't listen to very extreme stuff too much, but I must strongly recommend these: Allegaeon - The Dopamine Void pt1 + pt2 (I can't recommend this enough) Archspire - Involuntary Doppelganger
I only got into this band pretty recently and I love them now. I think I like Death Atlas a little more than their new album, but both are great. I need to go back and listen to some of their older stuff.
Monolith of Inhumanity is the record that started their current run of incorporating the melodic elements and new vocal styling, and it’s still my favorite. It still has a lot if the barebones grindcore of older records, which is nice too. The closer on that album is still and will always be one of my favorite songs. I don’t think Travis has ever written more heartbreaking lyrics, and it still makes me cry every time.
TERRASITE is a phenomenal album by incredible musicians and Dave McGraw’s drumming is no exception, but much to my dismay, he hardly ever makes the elite drummers of extreme metal conversation. Thanks Geebz! Love your take on my preferred genre.
Hey, Geebz... Im still here. I definitely hear that Devin Townsend vibes in the Hook. Also compared to older albums in their catalog, it doesn't even sound like the same band. If u ever have the time, by listening to their earlier like Chainsaw Dismemberment or Hacked Up for Barbeque. Good to see ya Geebz.
Hello Geebz, I am still here!! Thank you for your analysis of this great great band! If you are interested, check Cradle of Filth especially their song Her Ghost in the Fog. It is a different metal gendra than Cattle Decapitation but I think their worthy enough for listening time.
Cattle Decapitation's last 3 albums have been absolutely fantastic. If you want to hear another great melodic hooky track from them try out Time's Cruel Curtain or The Unerasable Past+Death Atlas. I'd also heavily recommend listing to Psychonaut, they're a treat to listen to. Towards The Edge from their newest album is a great intro.
I stayed away from metal for most of my life because i always thought it was trash vocals, a drummer who hits the same drum as fast a possible, and some trash guitar using 25 different distortions. You have introduced me to so much good metal
I prefer this approach to reactions from people who study music and vocals. First time reactions are good for people who are ignorant to anything other than top 40

they sound more refined and less extreme than what I rememeber them to be from years ago. when did they introduce clean vocals? seems like a step in the right direction
That's slightly difficult to answer, cuz I think he's been using this vocal style as far back as The Harvest Floor (2009), on songs like Regret & The Grave and The Gardeners Of Eden. But, it was far more creature-esque lol. Like a goblin or Gollum. Then you could hear them really start to experiment with it a bit more on Monolith Of Inhumanity (2012). The more aggressive goblin version of it on songs like A Living, Breathing(etc) and Dead Set On Suicide. But, Travis also tried getting more melodic with it on songs like Lifestalker, Your Disposal and Kingdom Of Tyrants. With each following album he started getting more melodic and more refined, as well enunciating more and sounding a little more grounded and less goblin-esque lmao. Songs like Mammals In Babylon (2015), Time's Cruel Curtain (2019) and this one. But, make no mistake, while they are melodic, they are *technically* not cleans. The reverb and whatnot just makes him sound way less raspy than he actually is. Which brings up another thing, they actually do have songs with real cleans now as well lol. Death Atlas (2019) & Just Another Body (2023) have this super gothy, deep style of singing near the ends. In addition to that, they have a cover of In The Kingdom Of The Blind, The One-Eyed Are Kings (by Dead Can Dance) that's almost completely clean. Not on music streaming platforms, unfortunately. You can find it on UA-cam, though. I guess you could also count The Monolith (2012). It's m'ore of an ambient interlude kind of track, but he does some spoken word that culminates in some NIN-esque shout singing. So uhh, did that answer lmao?
Personally i'd like to hear a bit more distortion on their guitars, at least on some slower parts. Felt a bit weak to me but maybe i've been listening to too much sludge and doom metal.
I like this band but totally disagree with their lyrics. If they want everyone to die they can start with themselves, and the same to anybody who actually thinks that.
@Drewthemagnificent I don't disagree that it grabs people's attention. I think it gives alot of metalheads like myself that maybe aren't as into extreme death metal as other genres of metal the impression that we are just going to get alot of gutteralls and blast beats. While Cattle Decapitation provides that, they're so much more.
My favorite band for a reason.
Well, you underestimate nature and you're not sentient enough to understand that all life forms are destructive. By nature
I'm yet to further explore their music. Does he uses this melodic vocals more often? I love when bands do that because it emphasizes everything.
@@ivonbeton4725 Yes. And he isn't afraid to experiment within his toolbox

So glad you got to Cattle Decap. One of my favorite bands in 40+ years of being a metalhead, and this is their best album, imho.

I have had so much trouble deciding which album is my favorite as everything from Harvest Floor on is just incredible! One of those bands that doesn't know how to put out a bad album.
Great review Geebz!
I've watched Cattle Decap live and I can honestly tell you they are just as good live. Travis is incredible on vocals.

Another thing that’s great about them is they always play in my city and most bigger bands only play the bigger cities.
I saw them a few months ago, was in the pit and it was the best concert of my life. (i've been to more than i can remember) cant wait to see them again this November.
I started listening to them after my first contact with them was live. Holy s***t, what a display of power!
I toured with them 10 years ago with my band son of Aurelius

No one but Travis has that particular sound. None dare to imitate it it’s too iconic. Would sound like such a rip. Travis is the goat ha

Throw in A Photic Doom, Just Another Body,Bring Back the Plague. The list is endless

Great band with a terrible name.
What's wrong with the name? It grabs people's attention
These burp races are beautiful!!!!!
