There's a reason that that motor is still around because that is an american-made motor made with American aluminum and steel buying American with quality control. It's not assembled by mr. I have seen these before but never put much thought into it. But its super clean as is the motor. zero corrosion. Would like to find a parts list for it. Hi Brandon - Need some advice and you seem to know quite a bit about these old Johnson Motors. I have a 1975 115hp (115ESL75), came with the boat I'm restoring, similar to the one in this video it also has the original tilt/trim system on it. The motors exterior is a bit beet up from sitting in a mates paddock for a number of years but seems mechanically fine. The tilt/trim system on the other hand looks like it may need a rebuild. Do you know if there is a seal/o-ring kit for these? Can't seem to fine anything listed in the service manual I picked up for it. Any advice on what to use would be greatly appreciated.

A very informative video about the Prestolite. I recently acquired oner that looks very similar. Although it's in ruff shape I'd like to get it going without breaking my budget. The problem is that I'm have no way to test it to see iif it works. The wires are corroded, and the former owner used rubber sealant over to fix leaks. Does this unit use only the starboard side one cylinder to raise and lower? I noticed the port side cylinder has no oil lines attached, is it only for support? Keep up them good videos!
Mine won’t go all the way up. Also after reaching highest point that it will currently go (75 percent up) it starts to drop slowly in small increments taking 10-15 min to lower most of way while resting. 1975 Evinrude 85hp. What fluid ? Also, what is process for bleeding or servicing ? Thanks

I have this exact unit. Two questions . My original completely went out . I found a used one but it bleeds down quite quickly . Question 1 - I found a new one so how do I fill it for the first time . I have the same unit, and same question about how to fill it. The knurled nut on the side of the pump housing is the fill cap. Most people seem to use dex III transmission fluid in them. But I'm not sure how much or if the power piston needs to be extended or retracted to fill. Let me know if you find out. As far as trim, the transom bracket should have a series of holes and a rod that passes through to set the trim. This unit will not hold the engine by itself in a trim position. Part number 0383568 should be the retainer rod that slides into the holes. I'm assuming your engine is from the 1960's, so not certain if they changed the part in later years.

I have this exact unit on my 1961 whaler.. just purchased the whaler. The tilt worked the first time I used it, but now, when I hold it to tilt "up," the motor doesn't move.. I have to lift it manually while the switch is in the "up" position. Then it'll stay up, and when I push down, it goes down.. fast. I've tried unscrewing the little hand screw on the tilt motor and putting new tilt/trim fluid in it (which honestly seems very thin for the job, but while I am experienced with small engines, I'm new to boating and all its gear).. but it basically just dumps right out, and doesn't work any better. I've tried putting fluid in til it overflows, moving the engine up and down (manually up, coz it doesn't go up on its own).. add more fluid (flows out almost immediately again).. up and down.. no dice. The thing seems to be getting good power, it just doesn't lift the engine... any ideas? Took me a while to find a video with this tilter in it!! Thanks!!

Got a 76 75hp stinger with similar setup. Mines got the metal bracket with 2 lift cylinders on it plus the 2 lift assist cylinders in the middle bracket. More moving parts than id like to have! Would rather have single ram like on newer style power trim

Well it would have use a solenoid to power it up.

Yes, there is a relief valve on the motor.

i think those middle cylinders are shock absorbers.

Well, It doesn't quite work like that.
You rebuild or replace the motor parts.
The motor and pump reservior are built into one.
Many better to just upgrade to a trim tilt than trying to fix this one
