This was Joe Frazier's best fight. He never rose to this level again, but he did have some good fights. Joe pounded Ali as he had never been hit before.

In his prime...(1963-1967)...he had the reflexes to pull back from punches just in time. When he started his comeback in October 1970 against Jerry Quarry...Ali didn't have that ability anymore...he was heavy...he had slowed...he never learned the finer points of boxing...didn't know how to block a left hook...held his hands way too low...and just laid on the ropes and hoped his opponents got tired from hitting him. Not much of a strategy....he was basically a punching bag in the 1970's...and look how he ended up.

Honestly, he punched the crap out of Ali for most of that fight. The strategy was wrong. Ali went 15 rounds with Frazier 3 times and you see what Forman did to him twice. In my opinion, in his prime, Forman could beat anyone including Tyson. If they had a rematch Ali loses. Forman also killed Norton. Ali had the media and Forman didn’t in the younger years. Later on Forman did have the media and a different attitude. Honestly, George was the best.

He paid a terrible price for his physical toughness and indomitable will. But this is a different world for combat sports today. Fights are stopped quickly there are no unbeilvable combacks and in MMA there is an endless pressure to stop fights quicker and quicker. I get it but there is something magnificent about these life and death struggles precisely because there is a price to be paid and fighters know that better than anyone. But what amazing f’ing dudes 🔥👏👏👏

Good point. The GOAT status for anything is not just about skill alone. There were certainly better boxers than Ali, but he had probably the best business branding out of all of them. His poetic tough talk, the attention of the war that made him a political figure, his bravado of self proclaiming himself the GOAT, etc. Even people who knew nothing about boxing wanted to see him win or lose. It’s the same with Mayweather. He says it all the time - he understands the BUSINESS side of Show Business. Guys like that draw the crowds and are the guys you make movies about - not just the guy who quietly went undefeated. At least that’s my guess
