    Here's an update that I really didn't want to do. It is what it is though, so I will just tell it like it is. I can assure you that this won't be a common theme here on SerpaDesign and I will also say that all of my other terrariums are doing well. You can expect to see updates on most of those in the near future.Go check the video description for more details as well.
    I suppose this gives me more terrarium videos to make! Anyways I hope you guys will understand where I'm coming from and not be too hard on me about this one.

      You OVERwatered your cacti. Cacti can only take water depending on the amount of sunlight you give them. If kept indoors they should be watered very rarely even if in a south facing window. If kept outside in full Summer Sun you can water them up to twice a week depending on how quickly the soil dries!!! I can tell by how etiolated the opuntia is that they didn't get much Sunlight.

    I'm literally just starting, and I have to say it's a relief to see the failures of people I consider experts. It's honestly intimidating to see nothing but perfection from people. Thank you for inspiring me.

    Hi, as a grower of cacti first thing i notice is the long growth, this is mainly due to low light levels. This will cause problems like the cacti being long and leggy, having poor immune system and being very sensitive and rotting if overwatered, an easy fix is simply more light and an hour or so of direct sun, unfortunatly its something these desert plants need. Avoid water in winter, water freely in spring when they are growing, and sparingly in summer and fall.

    • @SerpaDesign
      @SerpaDesign  7 років тому +6

      Most definitely issues will come from etiolated growth. Unfortunately my previous location just wasn't bright enough. That's why I will most likely stick to artificial lighting in the future. Also I watered exactly as you have mentioned. I really do think the culprit was under watering.

    Been binge watching you all day, probably my favorite video I've watched so far out of the dozens of others... It's good to see people who are humble and admit they did something wrong. Perfection is the absence of improvement, and you most definitely improved since you posted this, and it's great to see. You've inspired me to get back into terrariums, thank you so much!

    Looks like at least 2 cacti are salvageable. If the root is dead, cut off the base of plant or lobes. Let the cut dry and replant. They might need a little more attention to get them to root but they should.

    It is no fun being sick. Especially when you're so sick that you have that 'I don't care' feeling. Believe me I understand what that feels like. I'm very glad you're feeling better. I'm glad your original instructions for the cactus terrarium still stand. I have 2 cacti in separate pots and I'm gonna add another to my collection and do a similar terrarium. Plus I just got my tiny corked bottles in the mail for making tiny terrariums. You've inspired me Tanner. Ive always loved nature but you've shown me a whole new way of interacting with it.

    I am silent viewer and admirer of your videos and you are very honest and helping to tell others from your experience. Here is how I see it.
    1. The bugs are a big no, you can’t afford to plant in an ecosystem with a remote chance of bugs.
    2. The Cactus must have done well if kept in window, morning dew and mist must have kept up with any under-watering.

    I watch a lot of cooking videos. Working on recipes takes a lot of failing too. I love it if YT cooks come online and share their "fails". You can learn a lot from failing, look at it that way. It's true, sharing your "fails" with us is helping too. I bet lots of people who watch you sometimes struggle with taking excellent care of everything all the time. We're all but humans you know ;) Thank you for uploading this and being so real with us! I love it!

    I liked your channel before but with this video you realy gain my trust, this is the hobby we know. Some times your project fails and all you can do is try to learn from it. I think many people who try this hobby (or any hobby) fail their first time and videos like this might give them the curage to try again with new results. Great job!

    I have made many mistakes also. Not as an oldman my plants do very well. I have worked out a simple schedule for my plants. Basically I only water house plants like this as follows. All cactus are watered on the first of every month, just enough to to get the soil wet. No extra water at all. after five minutes of watering I check the tray and use a paper towel to absorb it. None cactus plants are watered on the first and the fifteenth. Again no setting water. I fertilize in mid February when the light is getting stronger and then again in April and last in june or july. Then not again until next February. I hope this will help. In terrariums I use about one half the water you used and sterlize everything before putting it in. I enjoyed your videos and lack of ego in excepting your mistakes and moving on.

    I'm a recent subscriber from Japan and completely love your work and videos.
    Looking forward to the redone Native Terrarium + update afterwards. Mistakes made for the better :) Thank you for the update!
    I've been making terrariums for a while but never properly knew how microfauna adapted(especially springtails) and how to "properly" layer the bottom for the longevity of my indoor plants. You have educated me so much, I appreciate the hard work, experimentation, and creativity put in your videos.
    I've had a dead cactus sitting in my room for over 2 years, no water at all. It was crisp, shriveled up and completely lifeless. One day, I took it out in intentions to throw it away, and by coincidence placed it in a spot where rain would hit. After a week or two, it grew back all brand new. Yours still may be alive and if you haven't got rid of them, give them a chance.

    I am a serious plant enthusiast. That being said I cannot tell you how many times I messed up. I try to see every experience as a lesson learned. Im glad you updated us. Thanks for the update - I've been meaning to make a native terrarium since you first posted the video and it's good to see how to avoid some potential problems. I'm in no rush and have just been keeping my eyes open for that 'perfect' container which I will know when I see it! More than that though, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy all of your videos. I find them relaxing and like to watch them while I work (I make jewellery) and have seen some of them a good few times!

    I love that you were so honest with these updates, if anything, I think that this is one of the most important ones, because it shows that you’re human too and make mistakes. I think it’s so much more motivating for beginners to know that it’s okay to make mistakes. As for the one in your room, you could always leave a small spray bottle near it so you can just spray it every so often :)

    We fail, we learn, we grow. 😁
    Quick question for everyone in chat and yourself. I made a terrarium and after 1 month I have notice a (currently) small spider snuck it's way in. Should I attempted to remove or will the springtails be Ok? It's a medium size jar.

    • @KasumiRose77
      @KasumiRose77 7 років тому +4

      Andrew Harding it's likely to live quite a while and don't think it el eat the spring tails.. But if you have a piece of charcoal exposed in there for them to breed, should be fine if he does. Would be a fun thing to watch.

    Hey Tanner right now I'm cultivating spring-tails for my 50 liter carboy terrarium and I am wondering if your spring-tail culture dense enough will it hamper reproduction? Right now I would say all of my charcoal cultures are covered with 60% spring-tails at any given time. Should I wait until it reach 90-100% to split them up?
    Also out of genetic luck I think I have a crimson red tropical spring-tail now and your spring-tail video taught me everything I know.

    • @SerpaDesign
      @SerpaDesign  7 років тому +3

      They do tend to max out at a certain point. You can split the colonies at any point, but the more you have, the faster they will reproduce once moved. Also I'm glad my video was of use to you!

Then we got that cold spell and I brought it back in and it looks like it's dying again. I don't know how I can bring it back. It might be too late. And I tried to bring my kalanchoe in too and that's going south as well. So I feel your pain, but appreciate your honesty.

      African violets do not like to be soggy. They need well-draining soil. I put mine on a layer of gravel in a large dish for extra drainage. Also, replant your violet and raise it in the middle of the pot, sort of a mound. Then, water only in the channel around the rim (I water once a week). Never let water get on the leaves and especially the crown of the plant!! I also use grow lights in winter for all my plants. If you don't have a lot of plants, just a small 24" light should be enough. Good drainage and aeration are important for any terrestrial plant (kalanchoe included). I hope that helps.

      If the leaves are green and firm it will survive, pull off all the soggy leaves

    I truly appreciate your transparency and candor when it comes to success with terrariums.
    I will be using your techniques to test and trial my first terrarium - I'm excited to report back how mine perform!
    For the mealy bugs, were they transported in the soil collected? Do you use any organic methods to mitigate the pests?
    What software did you use to create video and section headers? Mac or PC? How long did it take to create this?

    I'm still going to try a native terrarium - I live in NZ and I want to do one with native kidney ferns and the Dawsonia (largest moss in the world). I'll see how I go. Thanks for your videos :)
    Question: is there such a thing as a fungi terrarium?

    Nice vid! Can you do an update on your 125 gallon vivarium? You could go into detail about what plants and animals you keep in there. :)

    The isopods surprisingly probably contributed a lot to the decimation of the plants. I put them in multiple terrariums and they eat everything if there isn't enough leaf litter.

    Great videos! I love the how to and update videos for it's content. I wonder where the SerpaDesign name came from since Serpa is an uncommon Portuguese family name.
