I'm really enjoying this terarrium and I like how the update turned out as well! I personally don't care for the updates, but I'm curious about what you think. Should I continue doing the updates?
SerpaDesign curious how the live bugs🐜 are able to survive in the terrarium once you seal it with the airtight lid. Is the jar with lid you've chosen to encapsulate your terrarium the best choice for this type of project? And for those who may not have viewed your previous videos, it would've been nice to learn more about trapping oxygen in the jar along with spraying the plants 🌱 in combination with the live bugs and how they all work together to sustain the terrarium. Also locations where one may find the bugs used in your terrarium and why the bugs you've chosen are the best for this type of project. Perhaps the seven (7) thumbs down would've be seven (7) thumbs up. By the way, I was not one of the seven. I enjoy watching and learning from your videos. You would make a great instructional teacher. I certainly would've taken your course over gym, 😂.
The updates are very informative, as they provide us with a look of what goes right or what goes wrong. At the same time, it is cool to see the fate of a project!
Have to say I really enjoy the updates, especially as they show how you can maintain and make changes to your terrarium over time. Maybe you don't need to do them as often as you're currently doing?
My 7th grade science teacher had a terrarium that has been growing for 20 YEARS. It had tons of plants and was super big and dirty on the inside, but everything was growing just fine on the inside. It was insane. Edit - About 20 years according to him. Even if it wasn’t, it was still obviously super old.
I’ve actually got a completely sealed native terrarium that’s been going 3 years strong with absolutely no maintenance whatsoever. The crazy thing is it actually sits outside, exposed to the elements. It only started with an inch of soil, but the decomposing matter has actually created a 2-inch layer of soil. Maybe ill show it in a video!
Please do, I made a closed terrarium that only lasted a few months, which I suspect is due to inconsistent sun light as I'm very inexperienced with which side of the house to put it on and location in the room (indirect/direct sunlight). It sounds like you've got it made though so any tips would be useful :)
Harry Chippers will do! Im just waiting for the weather to turn nice. Go ahead and subscribe for when i make the video, but beware of my other content... its really bad!
yeah and they would have no belly buttons, but are very hairy... like adam and eve should have looked. but in every representation they are white, hairless and have belly buttons. wth! 🤣
Hi Tanner, first of all, thank you so much for all the educative videos you have made so far, my girlfriend and I have learn a lot. We have done around 10 closed terrariums about 3 weeks ago, and we are currently noticing that mold is building mainly on dry wood pieces. We are ventilating them regularly and we have replaced contaminated wood pieces but the mold is still coming back. For the composition of our terrariums, we have followed your instructions, and from that point we tried different kinds of false bottoms with mesh, always with activated charcoal. The substrate is made of coco fivers, sheet moss, potting mix. Finally, we have different kinds of plants and local mosses. Some are only mossariums, composed of false bottoms and activated charcoal only. We have also boiled decorative wood pieces and rocks for sterilisation and using spring water only. We didn't find springtails for now but there is life in the terrariums coming from the local mosses (which look like springtails). We are assuming that the origin of the problem would be either: - over watering, - the potting mix that we added to the substrate (we have seen afterwards your video where you advised against using this), - or the local mosses might have brought some spores of mold...? What would be the problem according to you? Would you have some advice? Again, thank you a lot for the videos and the tremendous time you're spending on these, there are really inspiring. R+V
I don’t really know much but I have watched quite a lot of videos and you could maybe try putting some wood lice/isopods in there as they will eat the mould. 🤞😊
Every time I see one of your videos, I want to make whatever you were demonstrating. Some of the builds are beyond my skills right now. However, I could make a native terrarium, so I think I will! Happy holidays!
Long time subscriber, love your videos! Finally got ourselves together and went foraging today and found some beautiful moss and other things. Spent the whole afternoon as a family and now have 6 native terrariums of varying sizes on the go! Thanks you again!
I made my first closed terrarium today! Really happy. Not very optimistic about its future but will get better with time because I will be making many more of them. Thanks a lot for the inspiration.
Yes its good to see updates on your projects. I always watch your designs/builds and wonder how they mature and develope. Merry Christmas to you and your family ;o)
Its actually not unusual for plants like fern to appear like this as many seeds are stored in the earth as diaspores (not sure about the translation here) waiting for their time to shine. We talked about this in class the other day
Thank yo for all the work you have done. I have been watching your channel for about 6 months now. It has inspired me to start my own terrariums I have 3 at this time. And working on some more. Thank you for everything.
Recently came across your channel and I've been binge watching all your builds! Absolutely love what you're doing and it's definitely making me want to have a go!
Question: I remember an article about self sustaining sealed large terrarium that almost never opened but stay alive for decades. Do you think it's possible for smaller plants? Also any plan to do collaboration with Ants Canada?
I love the updates, when you do them, really all the videos come out well and the variety of different kinds of videos you put out means you really can't get bored watching them!
Your videos still inspire years after being made. That’s pretty cool also I feel like you’re the kind of person who would grind their finger tips before each build so you didn’t leave smudges on the glass😂
If it wasn't the middle of winter and I wasn't planning on moving across the country in a few months I'd totally build one of these myself! Great video! Very informative.
You should get a table at a flee market and sell these with some small maintenance or care instructions, just to clean the glass. That's easily something people would spend $60 on - esp with the "almost no care needed" attached to it. The only real expense would be the jars. Great job.
I made my first Native Terrarium 5 months ago and gave it to my sister-in law with 4 different kinds of mosses in it and it's doing great. This spring I'll be making a few more for myself and friends because when they saw the one I gave to my sister-in law they loved it. =)
I just found your channel and have been binge watching, it's sooo satisfying, great work and great videos! You inspired me to make a terrarium for myself!
I just found this channel recently, but I find it so enjoyable to watch. If I wanted to do free or native terrarium, where would I find out about what plants in my area are good for terrarium life?
Mostly through trial and error or research. I will say that mosses and evergreens tend to usually work. However, if you live in a tropical area, then pretty much anything is fair game.
This is brilliant! I got so inspired by your work, noticed I've always been planning to make one of these from local flora and fauna :) The sight and idea of making life survive in a jar is somehow empowering and I think it tickles some ancient instinct.
As always thanks for the update and have a great holidays, I would love to see an experiment of land mosses and liverworts growing under water in the next year
You're welcome and happy holidays to you as well. I will definitely do that at some point in the year. Probably when it gets warm out again, so I can get some nice specimens.
I'm about to try my first terrerium, and have collected a stick that has very cool fungus on it, and is partially rotted thru. Can it be put in a terrerium, or will it do bad things? I have two kinds of moss that I have been trying to keep alive, nice stones, and this 6" twig, plus spider plant babies and pothos. If I can get one thing made and keep it alive for a bit, I think I'll have the gumption to try something else. I have hydroton that was previously used, and I'm going to get the mesh for a false bottom today. Substrate will take some thinking on. Thank you for your videos!
Watching this on my 70 inch tv it's just awesome I'm just trying 2 get educated before I put hand and stuff like this ..I really wanna do some terrarium but I dont want 2 fail..👍👍👍👍👍

I really love the vids and i'm not correcting him since he didn't say how the red worms did most of the damage i was just genuinely curious so i could be fully informed moving forward with building a terrarium in case anyone knows.
I made one of these, but my plants grew too much during the last 2 years, and they recently busted out of the seal, forcing the container open. I think I need to start over in spring. I had no idea moss could grow 8 inches tall!
I would find it interesting to gather some flora and fauna locally, then go somewhere 100's of miles away and get some more and so on. Mix it all together and then study the results.
