It's finally that time! I've been getting so many questions about the VFT Terrarium. It's spring, so it's finally time for the update. We'll follow up with it again in a few months. Also, just because I know I'll get questions about them, all of the other terrariums I didn't show in this video as still doing really well. I only showed ones in this video that needed maintenance or redone. Anyways, enjoy the video!
Please can you make a terrarium similar to the VFT but maybe with a mix of carnivorous plants... maybe: drosera capensis, fly traps, saracania (pitchers).
Hey I just made my own and am worried cause I saw a tiny clear worm that almost looks like a nematoad, I have 2 garden variety millipedes, 1 garden variety worm and 5 isopods, should I be concerned for them? Idk what type of nematoad so of course am not sure what to do
I think it's silly for people to be upset with you maintaing your terrariums. You're trimming dead growth, paying attention to the health of the plants, and overall just keeping balance!! Terrariums are a simulated ecosystem, they're not perfect, so they're going to NEED oversight to be healthy and happy, particularly because of limited space and how plants dont really know that they should.... stop growing. You do amazing work with your terrariums and you keep them beautifully healthy. People should respect your passion and skill with this craft, rather than harping on you for treating your terrariums differently and actually caring for their needs!!
The reason I wish that he wouldn't do the maintaince on at least some of them is because I found this channel after extensive searching that all started with the 40 plus year old biosphere that is now in a museum that has never been opened and is still thriving. The most interesting part of this channel to me is the idea of a self sufficient biosphere like the earth that could last forever with only sunlight if it wasn't for external interference. Creating a world that many organisms will thrive in long after I'm gone is an interesting way to live on after death definitely more interesting than a short lived house decoration.
I know I'm 2 years late, but that flytrap was already half dead in this video. That's not what a dormant flytrap looks like. Long story short: insufficient light.
I really think people that don’t do maintenance are both haters and lazy... you HAVE to do maintenance bro... I have only been doing terrariums, vivariums and paludariums since I’ve been watching your videos... and that’s been over a couple years now... I do maintenance as often as needed and they are all in great shape like yours... when it comes to these artistic projects I leave nothing to chance and have been doing everything by the ways of @SerpaDesign as far as I’m concerned your advice is the gold standard of all things terrariums...
Yeah dude I agree with you on most of those points. Why leave it up to chance if you can pretty much have guarantees success with 5 mins worth of work? You know I'm in the game of making successful terrariums and want the same for my viewers. Like I told someone else, it's the "terrarium purists" as I've called them. They think it should remain closed permanently or it's not a terrarium. Anyways, I'm glad yours are still going well. 💪
Terrariums are an art form, and just like any other, I think you should be bale to do it however you want. If you want to leave it to chance and never open your terrariums, that's fine. You do you. If you want to do maintenance every couple of months, that's perfectly fine too. I think you should be able to do it however you want, and never judge others for how they do it.
I think it's just personal opinion. I prefer not maintaining because I like the idea of a maintained ecosystem that doesnt need my help. But if you prefer to maintain, you do you
Love your channel so much you have such a nice personality, and I love that you go over the problems and failures as well as all the successes, it helps us learn from you even faster, and shows people not to get discouraged because if it can happen to someone as good as you, then the rest of us can and should learn to take it in stride.
I used to not like the idea of terrarium maintenance but after my first terrarium that i did not maintain i finaly relized why we need to clean them every now and then, and also it is a good time to edit your terrarium and make changes in the time that you are cleaning them
That flytrap terrarium is awesome! Almost all temperate carnivorous plant terrariums I have seen have failed because of like you said the lack of dormancy or Inadequate lighting, great job!
I’m glad they made it through the winter. They do look a little etiolated; they basically want as much light as you can give them. But I’d really love to see this terrarium in full growth, and know how much light they’re getting. When I grow them inside I keep them about 10” from LED or T5 fluorescent tubes. I’m with you on maintaining terrariums. It’s the nature of the beast. We aren’t creating real chunks of nature; I’d compare it more to gardening or even Japanese gardening where we work to create natural beauty in miniature. And if you’ve ever seen how intensively Japanese gardeners maintain their landscapes...!
I like having the ecosystem run itself and just see how it all ends up, although I do have one decent sized one I maintain like you do to make it look nice and well kept- living art. Keep going I love your content.
From watching your chanel i tried my hand at some terrariums using jewel orchid and then some with pepperomia that like a lot of humidity. They turned out great but I didn't do maintenance mostly out of ignorance and after almost 2 years they are looking rough but the plants are happy and overgrown. Will be remaking them and this time doing the maintenance. Thankyou I love your channel
Nice update and maintenance. I hope for the best in the future for the ones that aren't doing so well at the moment. I find it very silly for people to get upset over your maintenance videos. I do understand that the concept of bottle terrariums are really meant to be kept closed but it isn't mandatory. Your maintenance videos allows us to get updates on your past terrariums, to help them thrive better, and it allows you to have more content on your channel without having to make another terrarium or other similar things.
your flytrap actually looks pretty healthy! that said, flytraps are still better kept outside in full sun, they develop amazing color and grow stronger. you should try both and see the difference!
SerpaDesign You realize you’re heading down a slippery slope from which there is no return, right? “Since I’ve set up a bog environment, I really should grow a Sarracenia or two. Or three or four. Or five. And before you know it, your entire back yard has transformed into a vast expanse of kiddie pools sporting forests of tubes filled with piteously buzzing trapped flies...it’s a hard life, but someone has to do it!
Wow that betta is beautiful I'm not into terrariums but, I keep a couple bettas and other exotic pets so these terrariums are interesting to watch and add to ideas for my pets!
I'm glad you do what you love. No one should care what you do with your terrariums! We dont usually just let plant do what ever. We usually water them and trim them and prune them. Why should your terrariums be any different?
HOLLY WOW! So many terrariums! Very cool..... it just dawned on me.... I have a HUGE three neck flask from an old chemistry lab of my dads....... MY FIRST TERRARIUM is BORN! I was thinking of cost... where can I get a cool container. Well..... apparently I have one! Step one done. Next step - to harvest some ferns and moss and get em clean and growing. HOW FUN! Thanks for the inspiration!
I’ve been waiting for the Venus fly trap update! It honestly doesn’t look as bad as I would expect! Mine just came out of dormancy those small plants grow back bigger and stronger!💪 great vid!
Very nice. Update and maintenance videos are great to see too! Teach people how to maintain the terrariums they build with you. It would be even better if you linked to this in the initial build as a pinned comment maybe.
Now I wanna make my own terrariums but I really have little patience and maintenance so...maybe I'll just watch for the time being lol. Love your works!
Mother Nature's always pulling maintenance on Her patch and any human trying to simulate Her Greatness should too. Carry on doing what you do soooo well!
I love the calming effect of vidoes like this! Just found your and wish I would have way sooner! Your organization and video quality are top notch! Thank you for the hard work it shows! I think a desert themed terrarium would be really cool! Sand, cacti 🌵 and a cave! To cool!
I can't imagine why ppl would have a problem with terrarium maintenance. Part of what I like about my plant collection is the zen taking care of them brings to me. I'm looking at trying to make my first terrarium and will most definitely be doing maintenance if required. Who wants a dirty jar sitting on their shelf after going to all the trouble to make it in the first place?
More beautiful terrariums. The maintenance is a perfect idea. Keeps them healthy and vibrant. Don't want them looking like an abandoned house with over grown shrubbery right?
I'm new to your art but have fallen in love with terrariums. There's probably a video but I haven't found it...terrariums with native mushrooms from my property. I think mushrooms n terrariums need each other but do not want to pull them up till I have a setup for them. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Great looking terrariums, sad about the ones that didn't make it but happy for the ones that did, the VFT Terrarium looks amazing as do the rest after ur maintenance, I was wondering if you could do a dessert like terrarium as I could use a little help making one of those for my leopard gecko and a large outdoor cage for my bearded dragon, I was thinking about making a video on the bearded cage, what do you think?
Atm I don't really have a desire to work with desert dwellers. Perhaps someday, but I know it won't be any time soon. I make videos on pretty much everything that I do, so I don't see any reason why you shouldn't make a video on it.
Aw, it's a shame that the no-opening-terrarium didn't work out once again. It's my favourite of your projects, and I think the setup itself is really impressive. I wonder what happened to it? Maybe the plants couldn't keep up with the amounts of nitrate? But then again, it's not like springtails produce all that much waste... Or maybe it's the other way around and there wasn't enough, which caused the plants to start dying for lack of nutrients? Hm. That doesn't really make much sense either, since that would have just balanced itself out again. I can't explain it either, but I hope that your third attempt will finally be the one that lasts! :)
@sherpadesign just wanted to let you know you shouldn't cut the dead leafs of of furns because they absorb the energy from those dead limbs just wanted to let you know
I'd think you'd want to trim it off to prevent mold growth in such a closed environment. Also to prevent disease spreading. I'm not a fern expert though.
Loved this video. I thought the venus fly trap terrarium looked really good. It did remind me of early spring. I forgot how good the rock work looked in it. All of them are looking good though.

SerpaDesign giant sequoia terrarium build please
Lol!
Please can you make a terrarium similar to the VFT but maybe with a mix of carnivorous plants... maybe: drosera capensis, fly traps, saracania (pitchers).
How can the moss clippings be used like that?!
Hey I just made my own and am worried cause I saw a tiny clear worm that almost looks like a nematoad, I have 2 garden variety millipedes, 1 garden variety worm and 5 isopods, should I be concerned for them? Idk what type of nematoad so of course am not sure what to do
9:26 "Clearly it's not doing so well, but it is still alive."
I thought he was describing me. 😅
Edil Asunio oh bro that's sad
Edil Asunio felt that 😔✌️
I know those feels

I agree. People act silly over something so simple.

Mara Lannan probably millennials complaining.
I need to watch and learn how you maintain your terrariums. Thanks much!
Hi, can you update the venus flytrap terrarium again? Want to see how it’s come back from dormancy. :)
Yes please. Update!
Yess!! I want it too!!!
I know I'm 2 years late, but that flytrap was already half dead in this video. That's not what a dormant flytrap looks like. Long story short: insufficient light.

I think it's just personal opinion. I prefer not maintaining because I like the idea of a maintained ecosystem that doesnt need my help. But if you prefer to maintain, you do you
I just don't do big plants
you getting out your tools rminds me of toys story where the old guy was repairing woody
Haha!
@HexagramMan it does look like that doesnt it
I dont get why people get upset when you do maintenance... I find it very satisfying... luv youre content
nothing like a man with an actual hobby in a world where most guys keep their faces glued to a phone screen.

I’ve recently made my first terrarium and it’s doing well! Thanks, Tanner!
You should do a fungus terrarium
I used to not like the idea of terrarium maintenance but after my first terrarium that i did not maintain i finaly relized why we need to clean them every now and then, and also it is a good time to edit your terrarium and make changes in the time that you are cleaning them
That flytrap terrarium is awesome! Almost all temperate carnivorous plant terrariums I have seen have failed because of like you said the lack of dormancy or Inadequate lighting, great job!
I like a maintenance video. I’m now on the lookout for a glass container I like to start my first terrarium.
I have learned two things from you right off.. regular trimming and a clean glass. Makes perfect sense but I never thought of doing that..thanks
I’m glad they made it through the winter. They do look a little etiolated; they basically want as much light as you can give them. 11:24 is when the flytrap terrarium update starts
THANK YOU
It's too late for me, but thank you. I was getting so frustrated watching maintenance of other terrariums I didn't care about 😂
Needed this 💕
Thank you
putting a rubber band around the cork first may help in making it more airtight... just a thought I got right now looking at your awesome work! :)
You've inspired me to do a terrarium. I love your videos and have been watching for about a month now! Keep up the inspiring work. Thank you!!
From watching your chanel i tried my hand at some terrariums using jewel orchid and then some with pepperomia that like a lot of humidity. Maintenance is key to a beautiful terrarium. Anyone that doesn't like it is simply watching the wrong channel :) you ARE an artist.
Hi Tanner! Congrats on buying a house! I'm considering trying a terrarium and your videos are very inspirational. TFS!
your flytrap actually looks pretty healthy! that said, flytraps are still better kept outside in full sun, they develop amazing color and grow stronger. you should try both and see the difference!
Of course they're better in full sun. I think I'll probably grow some by the pond in a few months.
SerpaDesign You realize you’re heading down a slippery slope from which there is no return, right? “Since I’ve set up a bog environment, I really should grow a Sarracenia or two. Or three or four. You have a great eye on the design of these containers. The wood definitely added a wonderful touch
i like the fact you maintain your terrariums
I'm glad you do what you love. No one should care what you do with your terrariums! We dont usually just let plant do what ever. We usually water them and trim them and prune them. Why should your terrariums be any different?
It's the "terrarium purists" as I've called them. They think it should remain closed permanently or it's not a terrarium.
Ahhh the snobs hahaha we see that with to many things. An open mind is bound to experience life in a more positive way. 😊 love your videos!
I love these dude, you're the bomb. Any tips when making first aquatic terrarium?
I hope your channel explodes in subs, God bless you my guy!
keep up the maintenance, never upset 👍
Love the clean up and changes. Great job!
I’ve been waiting for this video since you first hinted to it on your community tab! worth the wait !!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Just do what you want, man. Maintain or not maintain, it is just up to you.

You are right, sometimes maintenance is needed, great work 👍😉

It's cool to show your fails too... And ideas of how to rebuild
Go on man.I am always looking forward your terrarium videos)
Now I wanna make my own terrariums but I really have little patience and maintenance so...maybe I'll just watch for the time being lol. Love your works!
Mother Nature's always pulling maintenance on Her patch and any human trying to simulate Her Greatness should too. Carry on doing what you do soooo well!
You need to get into ant keeping my friend 😳 that would be amazing
Thank you again for your creativity. Could you do a video about where you got your terrarium tools?
by far my fave terrarium update vid
You make a really nice pieces of art, beautiful!!!
I love the calming effect of vidoes like this! Just found your and wish I would have way sooner! Your organization and video quality are top notch! Thank you for the hard work it shows! I think a desert themed terrarium would be really cool! Sand, cacti 🌵 and a cave! To cool!
With the flytrap one, you should try putting some small Drosera or some Pings to the rocks. My ones love it.
I’ve beeen waiting for this one. Yippeeee
Great variety! Such cool and creative ways to keep a host of terrariums. Thanks for sharing them with us
As part of your merch line. You should include various glass jars with lid options and a nice screen.
Can't wait to see the flytrap one bounce back! Great stuff as always man
Casper looked amazing in his cameo!
Now that its summer do you plan on updating us on the flytrap?
More beautiful terrariums. The maintenance is a perfect idea. Keeps them healthy and vibrant. Don't want them looking like an abandoned house with over grown shrubbery right?
I need some maintenance tools like you have here!
Beautiful 😍 eye candy for me is terrariums.
'those traps we all know and love.'
oh, you too Serpa? ;p
I need info on venus fly trp
Yes, I like the additional hardscape in the 5 gallon jumbo terrarium.
I'm new to your art but have fallen in love with terrariums. There's probably a video but I haven't found it...terrariums with native mushrooms from my property. I think mushrooms n terrariums need each other but do not want to pull them up till I have a setup for them. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
You are SO talented !!
Oh wow. If I kept terrariums, I wouldn’t be able to keep my hands off them! XD
Tanner is an great artist!!!!
the terrariums are always my fav, amazing content tanner, thank you :)

Thanks SerpaDesign, u inspired me to start making terrariums and you keep giving me ideas on new ones to make
Liked and commented before I even watched it, cause I know it's awesome
Aw, it's a shame that the no-opening-terrarium didn't work out once again. It's my favourite of your projects, and I think the setup itself is really impressive.
I wonder what happened to it?
I think the red patches might be a kind of bacteria that thrive in environments with little to no oxygen, so it's pretty clear that there is some heavy chemical imbalance in there.
Hi lovely hobby all looks so beautiful keep up the great work
Love it, cant wait to see you redo some of them
Hi! Great job ! I love terrariums ! So thnks for your video !
I like your tackle tool box
Thanks for sharing! I will try a terrarium!
I really like the "wilderness terrarium"
Awesome I love these videos but who else remembers the massive terrarium with frogs tanner did in the past?
If put some plastic wrap over the hole then put the cork back in it will seal better
thank you for the helpful maintaince tips🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I love these, I really want to make one.
I added a snowflower and a crocus jist before blossoming. Worked out well though would need to bevremoved tonenavle itbto regenerate in cold winter.
Awesome! Thank you for sharing
They are all really cool! The ones with the wood accents are my favorites! As soon as i saw them one thing came to mind! A bonsai tree terrarium so i'm now about to search to see if that's been attempted before! Maybe you could do the first if it hasn't!
This dude has me sold on a terrarium now and I don’t even know how I got to this video lol
Have we had any further updates on the Venus fly trap? Curious to see after the spring season. Also, I'm guessing you fed it critters you used to feed your other animals in the Animal Room?
It is totally normal for them to get some black dead ends over the time. You just have to cut them off gently or else they will begin to rot. It is like cutting your split ends or finger nails.
right on time!
Looks nice. Good work.
Tanner, i love your channel, you have taught me so many things. i am grateful to you. Although I have to ask where you got your tongs and twezzers from? In Australia I cannot find any. Would you be able to reccomend any please?
Never stop what you are doing!!!
You should use a euphorbia spirostycha or a euphorbia saintcapmariensis one. That would look cool. And they actually do better with a good amount of water, so if should be pretty easy to do as well.
Valeu pelas dicas e parabéns pelos terrarios, muito bom gosto. Sucesso.
Can I make a culture of wild springtails ? Springtails are not available in local pet store in India
Always admire your work. I have a big bottle that I want to try and do one but I'm scared I might not get it right
i like you doing maintenance
Gracias por hacer estos videos , saludos desde Perú
Beautiful - great work!
Needs another follow up video. They should be going dormant again, but I’d like to know how it looked during the summer.
Very nice man. You should make some live terrain for miniature wargaming
Veri good video, interesting and beautiful.
Beautiful
