It's Time To Rethink Living On A Boat...

  • Finding a dock to call home is becoming one of the hardest challenges for liveaboards as of recent. But that doesn’t mean you have to hold off on your dream of living on a boat, it simply means that your plan may need a little revision.
    There is a lot more to this lifestyle than simply living at a marina and enjoying the scenery from your boat. If you start out that way, you just may find yourself wanting to expand your horizons (ask us how we know?). But if you plan for those adventures now, it may lead you directly to a life on the water that sometimes may have felt out of reach.
    In this video, we cover lots of topics; From how hard it is to find marinas, whether being stationary at a marina is even a good fit, and even some personal limitations and how to overcome them. We often hear prospective liveaboards say things like, “someday”, or “if only I didn’t have this (fill the blank)”. So we decided to hold a discussion on the matter out of hopes that maybe we can convince at least one person to give a second thought to the things that may be holding them back, and whether there is a workaround.
    Will that one person be you?
    Thanks for watching. We hope you enjoy the video!

      The end was really fun you guys LOL! I have a 1994 33 foot express cruiser SeaRay. She is very well taken care of by me but still missing a little bit of space to comfortably be able to live in it, considering I have a golden retriever a Chihuahua and my girlfriend LOL I also have a UA-cam channel on regards of maintaining Mercruiser engines which is taking off pretty well. I’m hoping one day that will turn some revenue and along the way trying to put my ducks in a row to upgrade to a better live aboard! But all this aside whenever you guys are cruising through Fort Lauderdale I would love to come and pull up and bring you guys a case of beer that would be awesome!

      I wish there were a traveling fleet of boats that would sail around together in international waters and act as a floating village.
      When I say together, you don't have to be right next to each other just within 10 min of traveling to reach your neighbor.
      You would have neighbors when you need them and could get basic services without having to go back to land.
      You could even have a designated supply boat that could go into national waters to resupply for everyone without bringing your main boat into national waters.
      This means you could have firearms and whatnot in your boat instead of worrying about local gun regulations.
      If you need to bring your boat in for maintenance, you leave any contraband with a friend who stays in international waters while you go dockside.
      You could eventually get enough people in your fleet to make a floating micronation and basically seastead.
      I would call this freedom fleet.

      Financing was always a problem for me on an educators salary, and I wanted a houseboat. But I just got a boat loan from lightstream and its fair and has allowed me to make an offer on a local houseboat and the owner just said yes! I have the same motivations as you do and am also a cancer survivor. Everyone dies, NOT everyone truly lives! Go for it!

    I work remote full time in an RV now and saving up for my dream boat, but with the rise and popularity of live aboards, depreciation is not going as well as I have been watching for the last few years. Keep the beard growing, soon you'll look like a Pirates of the Caribbean character!

    • @TeamWiff
      @TeamWiff  3 роки тому

      So true about the depreciation, or lack thereof. I’m hoping that sometime next year prices settle back to normal, and this isn’t the new normal. But maybe you could get more for your RV if you wanted to sell it, since that market is so hot.
      And yes, I think I’ll have to keep it going. They may need me on set since they don’t want to bring Johnny Depo back. 🏴‍☠️

    Love your channel! Our plans are to get a Live A Board Sea Ray and find a place in Florida for it. But as a mechanic, trucker and UA-camr I would need to get to my shop. A marina or mooring ball would need to be close to that shop (currently in Wisconsin). So I would need regular trips to shore. I take all your advice and remember them.

    • @TeamWiff
      @TeamWiff  3 роки тому

      That shouldn’t be hard to make work. If you decide to try a mooring, the dinghy ride will be like a little bonus car ride. For us going to shore every morning, we’d pretty much pass the same commercial boats going out every day. Waving at those guys was a big part of our commute.

    I am new to watching your videos. I was attracted by the Dry Tortugas trip you took. My Soulmate and I are planning this as a post COVID trip. We have long term goals of part time BoatLivin’, and try to take at least two to three trips per year of at least 1 Month duration voyages (usually destination trips Tampa to Miami stay around a month and come back, Or other destinations). These allow us to really plan our addons to the boat for when we go 8 to 9 months per year cruising. We did a partial refit of our latest boat (Carver 444) about 3 years ago, and saved the rest to do as we learn what is important to us. Still working full time, and internet is very important. We are hoping that the low orbit internet (Starlink or similar) will be up and allow mobile (underway) use in the near future. This will free us up to travel more and longer without limitations (current Boat satellite internet is stupid $ and out of reach for most). I have two points that I would like to raise... 1. I keep hearing all of these Insurance horror stories, and you guys mentioned a couple that bothered me. Carrier refusing to renew during Hurricane season? This is most certainly ILLEGAL (in Florida for sure). If you have a standard policy with no odd exclusions or riders that is currently in force (like temporary travel or Lic. Captain Required) the Carrier CANNOT refuse to renew solely based on the fact it is Hurricane season or even if you have a named storm within X Miles. I have had insurance in Florida for 10+ years and it has always renewed during Hurricane Season - Never an Issue, and with 3 different underwriters/carriers. My second point, all of these so called weird rules and exclusions by Insurance companies. I dealt with them at first, but most (all in my case) can be solved by going through BoatUS (only speaking from my experience and several other boaters I know). Last point that applies here (for live aboards), Under certain circumstances you will lose the ability to choose between an “Agreed Hull Value” and value at the time of loss (aka “Actual Cash Value” or depreciated value Policy). Once you pass the length, age, displacement,, or over certain value, most Carriers don’t give you a choice. The Agreed Hull value policy can be requested to alter the value any time with a recent Survey with Appraisal included or with BoatUS a list of upgrades with receipts and pics. They will often meet you revaluation request, because it increases the premium. Again, I found all of this simplified with BoatUs insurance. Finally most of our (live aboard capable) boats qualify as a second home, and therefore are not required to be insured as primary residence unless you have a Homestead exemption on your boat. This helps a lot of the other insurance issues. Sorry so long, I just thought it might help others. Obviously you would need to asses your own situation to make sure this applies.
    I love your content and presentation, please continue. MSC

    Great video, I am working on positioning myself financially before jumping into living on a boat. Though I have taken the biggest step and moved out of Oklahoma and down to the Florida panhandle. We are trying guys never thought it would be this hard to find a boat ! And btw we were just told yesterday by Geico agent that they were the last company in Florida to ins older boats before 1990 >40ft. Well they just pulled out. So all those great 1980’s affordable boats are not insurable in Florida ! Hope this will change after the new year. We have had to decrease the size of boat we are shopping for now ! But hope to be out there living the dream sooner than later !

    • @TeamWiff
      @TeamWiff  3 роки тому +1

      That’s crazy! All we can say is assume that agent was full of it, and keep shopping around. Enlist the help of an insurance broker if needed. All these insurance people love to talk about what all the agencies are doing and not doing, but they don’t know what they’re talking about. Look for companies who specialize in marine insurance policies. We’ve never had good luck with any of the household name insurance companies with our size and age of boats.

    • @KnottyDeez
      @KnottyDeez 3 роки тому

      @@TeamWiff Well, we called and spoke to 5 different brokers, who were all recommended to us by different dealers, brokers, owners and the Internet and were all supposed to be "different" and specialized in older boats. One by one they all stepped up and one by one they all came back telling us, the rules have all changed, literally overnight. Whether true or not, in some respect, we were defeated. We've been homeless and shopping since Sept 25th, We outlasted our Air BnB budget, we outlasted our stay with friends and commute nearly 3 hours to work limit and we outlasted our belief that the perfect boat is out there. So, we made some really hard and definitive decisions and they will be broadcasted in our next episode next week. Let's hope there are no more catastrophes that derail us this time.

    How do you guys like living in south Florida? I am looking to relocate and live on my sailboat. Right now, my boat is in long beach CA. I found a good spot in a marina there to leave it while i get it ready for extended cruising. There first thing I noticed was so many people living in derelict boats. I was surprised some of these boat didn't sink. I know covid has been hard on people so I dont judge. I did take it kinda personal though when the marina manager asking me for proof of registration and insurance. I just turned around and look at the some of the dilapidated boats on the first pier. I asked, "do they have insurance"? He said never mind. I do have insurance, but it kinda frustrated me to be held to a different standard than others there. Right now, I have a son that is a freshman in college in Oregon so I spend a lot of time there. He will be transferring to Pensacola next fall so I will be moving my boat then. I plan on exploring south Florida so I can stay close to him until he graduates. Then I am off to circumnavigate the world!!!!

      Totally understandable about being held to a different standard... I never thought about the west coast having problems with derelicts, but I guess it doesn’t surprise me either.
