  • We break down the costs for owning our Hatteras Motor Yacht, including the costs for improvements and repairs, as well as a few extras.

    Our Story:
My name is Ed, I am an ex-muscian, turned politician, turned tax account, who now imagines himself a sea-captain. Lyn, is an ex-model, turned photographer and the love of my life.
We have spent the last three years traveling on our 65' Hatteras Yacht and it has been terrifying. We have faced down storms, been stranded at sea, towed off shoals and run aground by careless boaters.
But it has been magical as well. We have explored places known only by those who travel by water, met incredible people along the way, and learned so much about boating - and even more about ourselves.
And to think - until three years ago, Lyn, and I, never even owned a boat.
We met when we were 21. I was a starving musician, on my way To Los Angeles to starve some more. Lyn was a model, waitressing tables and dreaming of adventure. We went on our first date to the Jersey Shore, and spent the night on a boat her father was restoring. That date has never ended.
We traveled the country together, and settled for a few years in Hollywood, where she discovered her love for photography, and I discovered that music was not going to be my career. We put down roots in Bucks County Pennsylvania. We built a house together, raised three children and became your typical American family. She opened a photography business and I opened an accounting firm.
On a vacation to Key West, we met a woman who lived on her boat. She had been an emergency room nurse for many years but decided she had had enough. She sold everything, bought a boat and sailed to Florida. We were fascinated. It seemed so romantic, so us. The seed was planted.
Flash forward a few years and the children are grown. Lyn retired from photography and sold her business. And me, well, I was only working three months out of the year and looking for a new adventure.
So, we bought our first boat. A Carver 355. No experience, and completely clueless. We hired a captain to bring us to our local marina and we were determined to learn how to operate her. We practiced in an empty marina for a couple of days and then, we just went for it! We figured, if we liked boating as much as we imagined, we would trade up to our dream boat. Two years later we did just that.
This video vlog is our story. Boating has become our passion. We invite you to share this journey with us, as we explore the waterways of the Atlantic and Carribean, having the time of our lives, while "Trying Not To Sink."
    Cheers!
    Ed and Lyn.

Sorry about us losing your motor, the most common reasons for that happening are 1) Using a used box is like reusing a paper grocery bag, they can only be used so many times before their life is over. 2) Always tape the bottom as good as the top. It's amazing how many people tape the heck out of the top but never touch the bottom of a used box. And lastly, fill it up with filling so it has a solid shape and can't be crushed because that just makes the cardboard and seams weaker.
Sorry to say it but looking at your box, your claim may have been denied anyways because of poor packaging.
Thanks for sharing the videos though, I'm in the process of retiring from UPS and am looking forward to cruising down south like you're doing. You are an inspiration and if our paths ever cross, drinks are on me.

So if contents fall out of boxing you guys just throw the contents away and retape box and send it on???

@@boatrvme8478 I would like to say no but there are over 500,000 employees. Some good and some not so good.
In the large hubs the part may have come out on a conveyor belt and they get separated and no one sees it happen. When they each reach a person and are taken to rewrap separately, the rewrap area has multiple empty boxes and multiple parts. Which part came from which box is anyone's guess. So the boxes are sent on and the parts are inventoried. When the box arrives empty the sender makes a claim describing the part and hopefully the part is located.
But here is where it is about the money. How much time and money should UPS spend on finding a lost part when the shipper, who's part it is, didn't want to spend a couple dollars on a new box and some proper packing material?
It may not be a perfect situation, but no one has been able to come up with a better one and still been able to make a profit.

These "how much does it cost" videos are hugely helpful for an aspiring boater to get an idea of what its going to involve. Can I ask a favour? I know you do a ton of work yourself instead of just throwing money at the problem. I see you digging around in the wiring under the helm, or installing lithium batteries, or fixing a turbo, etc. All of these seem a little daunting to me. Could you include another column in your spreadsheet - how much would this cost to pay to have fixed (just an estimate if you don't know) vs DIY. I'm sure it would be rewarding for you as well, to see how much actual cash you are saving. Thanks! And carry on the great work of documenting life aboard a boat!

I am sorry to hear UPS lost your motor, I hate to say it but with out proper blocking inside the box and a certified box for the weight of the object inside the box. Losing the components is pretty common I have to admit. Years ago I flew UPS freight and saw this happen.
Since February 7 I have ordered 3 plasma cutter’s the first was DOA. The second one was lost in shipping. The third has sat in one location for the last days.😩. Suggestion if you need to ship a valuable item ie computer I wrapped the item in plastic then with some card board stand offs I then spray great stuff (LOW) expansion foam inside the box for a secure shipping method. 😁🛫

Hello Ed & Lyn. Really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work! I wonder if you could give me a bit of advice? My wife and I are contemplating buying a live aboard yacht. I’ve been looking at Hatteras 53s. I also see a number of 60s available. They appear to be basically 53s with the addition of the stern cockpit. As with all newcomers the idea of getting a 53 foot boat into a slip is a frightening prospect. A 60 footer seems terrifying. Getting your perspective on this would be very helpful.

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  3 роки тому

We have never been on a 60. We have been on plenty of 53s, and 58 Yachtfishs, which are basically 53s with an added cockpit. It was intimidating at first, but after owning our 58MY for a while it became easy to handle. I would not shy away from either boat because of size. You'll get used to it. In some ways, I fin d it easier to handle than a smaller boat. It is much less susceptible to wind and current. However, if you do not have prior experience on a larger boat you may have difficulty getting insurance. We owned a 40" Carver for two years, so we had no problem. But I have heard of others having difficulty. Feel free to contact us with any questions. We are far from experts but we do know old Hatteras's.

The maintenance / repairs really shouldn't be forgotten any year, simply because it hits harder the next year.

How many days was your Key West trip a couple years ago that ran you $25k?

    • @tryingnottosink9107

As I recall it was 59 days. Way too short for the distance we travel. Too hurried. Now we do 90-100 day trips.

Cruise ships are cheaper and much larger; I heard there is a guy who travels the world on cruise ships for 365 days in the year for about the same you are paying.
