They could not have disrespected him more. They were pop sell outs and Marr never was. Their lack of appreciation is a sign of their shame. I believe he played better as the song went on as he saw his band of music being disrespected by pop sell outs.
@@briansherman823 I don't see lack of appreciation in their demeanor. Musicians are a notoriously tough audience. And this setup is very difficult as well. With them being so close, it might have been weirder if they were facing him. What I could see was them subtly nodding to the music, smiling and then quickly applauding, all pointing to me that they enjoyed the performance. I can't compare what my reaction to this would have been in judgement of them. Of course, we all know that this is one of the most achingly beautiful songs ever written.
@@Rick-zl3zp I agree, people read too much into shit, they were just quietly enjoying it from what I saw , they are hardly going to sit there in awe being in the business that long. They even applauded at the end. Paranoid comment
What a treat. The Smiths (and their ilk) were, in a way, a response to the (over)indulgence of bands like Genesis but you rarely get to witness that sort of thing in a plain-as-day sort of way. Watching most of Genesis completely "not get it" was kind of amazing to see. Also, Johnny Marr outros. FFS.
I remember this. .driving the works van listening to the show with johnny. .rips into this classic .it was fucking magic...!!!...if I was in the studio there I'd be dancing like mozza . .arse in the air
Johnny is the master, his jangles are sublime and he sings it well, but the song is so missing Morrisey as a pair they are love and devotion Manchester red brick just pure class Those days oh how I miss those days
When I first heard the Smiths original, I thought was a depressing dirge. I now think of it as a tremendous love song" to die by your side, the pleasure, the privilege is mine" You cannot be more committed than that. Also " then a strange fear hit me and I just couldn't ask", how many of us know exactly that feeling.
"Johnny Marr plays 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' in front of Genesis & Brian Cox." More like Johnny Marr plays behind Geneis and Brian Cox. I'm being pedantic.
Johnny Marr is great, but leave off Phil Collins. He has had major health issues in recent years to the point that he can barely stand, let alone play the drums. He was definitely appreciating that performance nonetheless.
I thought the dude on the keyboard had a Hitler moustache for a second .. then i realised it was just the guitar pick in his mouth. Pretty tidy performance really .. and great to see Prof Cox enjoying it hehe.
Perspective folks: Marr is a guy in his 50's, who dies his hair jet black and wears skin tight jeans. Genesis are roughly 10 years older than him, which is hardly an epic gap.
William H oh for heavens sake of course his hair is dyed. It’s as black as black can be. Not that there’s anything wrong with dying it. But it’s very obvious. There’s aren’t any other fifty year olds on the planet with jet black hair, I doubt Johnny is the first.
I can see Phil not wanting to get into it at first, but once Johnny breaks out those shimmering arpeggios he can't help but bob his old noggin' along. :-)
Certainly not Brian Cox, Ive had the pleasure to work with him and he certainly isn't boring, I'm on about the three from Genesis who seem to be left cold by this wonderful song.
God, ramshackle setups are difficult, they get you kinda flustered, as evidenced by some really noticeable bum notes. Just reminds me he's actually human to be fair. It must be kinda weird having the drums to the left of you, I've always played with them sat at the back obviously because its your steady base to the song. Very well executed.
Brian's love in it. Phil ends up lovin it. The other two grim fuckers especially that Tony Banks arrogant wanker ( I saw the doc ) what a plonker. Johnny showed them twats except Phil and Brian etc.
I was glad to see Phil getting into the song halfway through, Brian's already got the brain to enjoy the song instantly. As for the rest of Genesis, they were publicly humiliated by Johnny's performance, even if it took a bit of time for him to get his voice right.
genesis look like 3 old grumpy men.Not an ounce of emotion out of any of them to this masterpiece.though not quite the same wihout morrisey on the vocals.when noel gallagher sings his own songs sound better than liam but cant say same for mr marr.
Sorry I appreciate Morrissey & his version too much & the way it has evolved over the decades live ... But I must admit this is better than festival performances Marr has made of Smith songs, plenty of engineering I suppose ?😃
+John Trollston His current band play his full catalogue with wonderful flair astonishing & a couple of The Smiths songs refreshingly Well played....All astonishing especially His best lead guitarist Jesse Tobias 😃
Listen to his solo album's in great detail for a few month's & feel every emotion in every story & grab a live show. Also his voice has improved over the years& his current band are the best group of musician's he has worked with....Boz Boorer& Jesse Tobias are the best guitarist's he has worked with 😃
In front of Phil Collins. I'm in creases. Great song though and your looking at a genius instrumentalist and song writer. I've got an idea, how about Martin Gore of Depeche mode teaming up with Johnny Marr. Imagine the harmonies.
What an awkward set-up that looks! Cramped & squeezed tightly in to a room looking at the backs of the heads of 3 old men & an ex-member of D-ream! You couldn't write it. :)
Such a wierd set up..I don't get this..it's like taking beloved classics and reducing it to the level of playing it in front of your nan when she's got her friends from the bowling..round..there is also an air of impress me ..as if he's doing an audition..it's so bizarre..I would just refuse to do it
Having their backs to Johnny playing one of the best tunes ever written is strange.
Lee Radmall I'd have turned around so fast, that mic stand would have suffered!
They could not have disrespected him more. They were pop sell outs and Marr never was. Their lack of appreciation is a sign of their shame. I believe he played better as the song went on as he saw his band of music being disrespected by pop sell outs.

Love how much more confident Johnny's gotten as a singer. Guitar playing as beautiful as ever. Great version
bookmarkthis its post punk, its intentional, Simon Cowell
The guitar outro makes me shiver. It smacks of Manchester, tower blocks, subways and the crazy buzz that was palpable in the air around that time.
How cool is it that Physicist Brian Cox can actually mouth along to the lyrics?
He seems to appreciate it more than the old geezers from Genesis do.
ofey probably reformulated Quarks thanks to the stimuli
He's a massive smiths fan
feel sorry for Johnny here, such an awkward set up
Really not placed with musicians in mind. Which seems odd for a radio station.
it's not a gig and he is wearing a baby blue cardigan...I think he's okay

3:21 i could hear over again and again.
Absolutely. So simple, the greatest guitar riff ever and it wasn't even really on the record.
Bruno Koch agreed
The Bamforth Yes it was.
the outro riff always gives me goosebumps
Brian keeping it real in the presence of a fucking wizard, the other 3 look like they need a lie down.....
I come back to this every so often, fucking class every time johnny
brought tears to my eyes
This is priceless!! The Ironies are on so many levels.
"fuck you moz im playing it"
Wanna grow old like Marr! Great voice dude!
Brian Cox looks like he wanted to join in, that's envious eyes right there folks!
For me this is so ironic on so many levels!
Brian Cox was loving that!
Is this 'The Voice'?
quite a clever comment actually haha :P
Genesis: "Jesus lads, I've just realised... we're fucking shite aren't we?"
This has to be the best smiths song ever
I love the smith and I love genesis x music is beautiful in all its forms x peace and love x
Johnny. my hero!
Stunning. Particularly Johnny’s outro guitar melodies
Perfectly perfect!
Johnnyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW... FANTASTIC BABY...!!! B)
that last 30 seconds though....
Gran versión y muy bien acompañado. Grande Johnny.
Cox gone to another planet.....
you know johnny was like "yeah you little genesis fuckers, let me show you what music actually is"
+doubleredsx3 You can't deny that Genesis have musical talent too, even if you don't like their songs.
+JJ H Let's see... Genesis don't have any musical talent.
Yep, you can do it.
+baboon2525 Don't have talent? xD Marr is good but he is nowhere near to Steve Hackett
Doubt it. I'm sure he probably couldnt give a toss
Brian Cox loving it
"Johnny Marr plays 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' in front of Genesis & Brian Cox." More like Johnny Marr plays behind Geneis and Brian Cox.
I'm being pedantic.
Pedantic ?
Ernie Mccracken over thinking and wording things
The 278th time this song has made me cry. Fuck me..
Johnny Marr is great, but leave off Phil Collins. He has had major health issues in recent years to the point that he can barely stand, let alone play the drums. He was definitely appreciating that performance nonetheless.
Thought Johnny made a decent fist of it but Genesis looked like they'd died the previous week. Or the previous decade perhaps...
I thought the dude on the keyboard had a Hitler moustache for a second .. then i realised it was just the guitar pick in his mouth. Pretty tidy performance really .. and great to see Prof Cox enjoying it hehe.
You want to see a guy on a keyboard with Hitler tache, check out the Sparks, tryouts for the human race is a classic song.
Cheers Johnny that was amazing can you bring moz next time😆
this video illustrate the blessing and curse of the internet......
this video certainly illustrates why Marr was never the singer in the Smiths!
Has anyone ever noticed that Phil Collins resembles what a human version of a dumpling would look like?
M. 1 😁😁
Was this recorded on a potato? Doesn't do the man justice
Pay attention Genesis.
Collins looks like he needs an ear trumpet
I don`t think that`s Phil Collins It may be Ray Cooper percussionists for all those English bands that play those benefit concerts.
Phil, Ray Cooper would show more appreciation for wonderful music... :)
They look alike . I haven't seen Phil Collins in years. He`s not one of my favorites..
The Bamforth well Here comes the Flood isnt one of theirs
Perspective folks: Marr is a guy in his 50's, who dies his hair jet black and wears skin tight jeans. Genesis are roughly 10 years older than him, which is hardly an epic gap.
Tony C I don’t think Johnny Marr dyes his hair tbf
Not so sure about the hair dye. He eats an incredibly healthy diet and judging by his skin etc it’s perfectly feasible his hair is still black.
Unfuckinlikely
William H oh for heavens sake of course his hair is dyed. It’s as black as black can be. Not that there’s anything wrong with dying it. But it’s very obvious. There’s aren’t any other fifty year olds on the planet with jet black hair, I doubt Johnny is the first.
So Johnny, you're going to be playing standing behind Genesis and the keyboard player from D-Ream
What a guy Brian Cox is singing along
I can see Phil not wanting to get into it at first, but once Johnny breaks out those shimmering arpeggios he can't help but bob his old noggin' along. :-)
fucking hell. .I would have been jumping off the walls ..
The Home by the Sea Pensioners bewildered in a seeming Land of Confusion meet song writing genius.
Phil Collins is like "I've been upstaged......again!"
I wish he would play with his old bandmates
1:46 Johnny pulls a face and a nice lick and Mike Rutherford takes note.
Phil Collins there looking somewhat bewildered...
Seems to perk up at 3:11 when the even more gorgeous guitar starts
Three boring old farts, listening to one of the most beautiful songs ever written
Prof Brian Cox a boring old fart? Are you fucking kidding me? He's the rockstar of Scientists
Certainly not Brian Cox, Ive had the pleasure to work with him and he certainly isn't boring, I'm on about the three from Genesis who seem to be left cold by this wonderful song.
He's the only showing interest, until about 2 mins in when Phil Collins seems to figure out he should be showing more appreciation.
They're probably thinking "Fuck, Morrissey ruined a beautiful song with those terrible lyrics."
wtf do you want them to do, get up and dance? They're in a tiny radio studio ffs.
Johnny fucking guitar Marr.
Awks!
You couldn't dream that up genesis proffessor Brian cox Sara someone or other and the great j marr what has fucking happened
Is Phil Collins nodding off?
My favourite version of this song. I think part of it is I enjoy watching the reaction to it. Sorry Morrissey, genius lyrics though
Oh if mozza was there!!
Why Even have them in the studio at the same time?
Coxy was defo getting into that XD
Totally bizarre. 3 tossers, an oddball and a genius. Only the BBC would put JM in such a strange set up.
Who's to say he wouldn't put himself in such a strange setup?
Exactly. After all, he was a member of The Smiths.
Fuck Marr, Fuck the smiths and fuck that libtard twat Morrissey.
Is it me or does Tony Banks look a bit like Charlie Fairhead from the popular BBC series "Casualty"?
I love it but WTF with the studio set up man?!?!
uau
mike rutherford, tony banks and phil collins in this studio...
morrissey
Marr murders this vocally. The Smiths are my favourite ever group and this is one of my favourite ever tracks, but this woeful.
these people don't deserve don't deserve to be on the same bill as Jonny Marr. No way.
phil collins looking like ben kingsley these days
Johnny tries to entertain some weary ageing folks before the weekly whist drive! Phil Collins's grandad looks like he's ready to go!
Genesis showing no interest at first... then all eyes on him playing that outro

Brian Cox thinking, move over bozo, then knocks out a rendition of things can only get better
Phil hearing a decent song for the first time...
Exactly different taste. I love The Smith's alway's & all of Morrissey's songs 😃
Listen to his solo album's in great detail for a few month's & feel every emotion in every story & grab a live show. Also his voice has improved over the years& his current band are the best group of musician's he has worked with....Boz Boorer& Jesse Tobias are the best guitarist's he has worked with 😃
Not the same without moz
It's like Johnny's doing a British legion club gig to disinterested members.
Brian Cox is such a tool.
phil Collins looks bored shitless
Tough crowd...
Weird as...
Phil Collins looks like he is waiting for his number to be called to get his weekly pension.
Fuck Brian Cox.
Such a wierd set up..I don't get this..it's like taking beloved classics and reducing it to the level of playing it in front of your nan when she's got her friends from the bowling..round..there is also an air of impress me ..as if he's doing an audition..it's so bizarre..I would just refuse to do it
who are those three old sacs of shit Johny Marr is playing for
Genesis including Phil Collins.
Genesis don't look impressed
This song NEEDS Morrissey...
Massive fan of JM - but ONLY Lord Morrissey of Vox can sing this (and any other Smiths song)
Sounds terrible
God I hate his singing.
Weak weak voice. Please stop singing Morrissey's vocals. He wouldn't play guitar to your riffs.
