- Johnny performing live for Brewdog Virtual AGM, April 10th 2021.
For guitar geeks: the gorgeous 12-string acoustic looks like an Auden Chester Black Series.
Watch "New Town Velocity" from the same session. Thanks to BrewDog!

Ya
Wow thanks for the tip. Great stuff
I tried to learn how to play Smiths songs on guitar and I was struggling until I realised the problem: I’m not Johnny Marr
his guitar playing on Well I Wonder is the best tbh. too beautiful to be true
Johnny is a Genuis what he plays doesn't look hard until you try to replicate it!
Anyone who's picked up a guitar will know how true this is. There's guitarists who get way more credit for flashy styles but I've been playing for twenty years and have never been able to replicate the subtleties of Marr's playing. He must be my favourite guitarist who I can't say I'm influenced by because I can't get close to anything he does.
P.S Think you can just about bash this one out with Am, C, F,G though!
JM sets a high bar for sure
He was probably the worst guitar hero to have growing up. Heck I could play some of the shredding Dave Navarro stuff from nothings shocking before I could play the smiths
You should see the tuning and capo for the headmaster ritual.
So lovely & inspiring♡ Thanks for covid-time boosts!
Great vocal performance
His voice is just getting better and better wow
Sounds effing awesome!
Agreed! He's the only reasons I enjoyed The Smiths. I tolerated Moz's singing. Johnny sings those songs better IMO.
I noticed Johnny seems to have gotten quite good at doing vibrato with his voice.
@@msmoniz get a grip! You can't call yourself a Smiths fan with a comment like that
@@wessmall9169 Yet here I am! Guess you're technically correct. I'm a Johnny Marr fan. The Smiths was just the band he was in at the time, and I enjoyed what he did in it. Morrissey, meh, he was the price of admission I had to pay.
"not even johnny marr is as good as johnny marr" -noel gallagher
Is Johnny Marr playing a Smiths song really a cover??? ;-). Beautiful version of the guy who co-wrote it!! :-)
interesting! perhaps it is, as he isn't the smiths, he was part of the smiths. dunno :-) probably version would be a better word.
Who wrote the lyrics? 😉
@@alaken dunno!
Is nearly any Oasis song that Noel sings a cover?
@@haroldroberts5250 Haha love it!
1:54 Johnny starts playing both guitar parts simultaneously - then realises that would be showing off and stops.
He does it at the end.
That one dislike has to be Morrissey. 😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣
True
Ahahahahha
Marr is the best melodic pop rock guitarist and tunewriter of the era; his tunes will remain on my playlists always. Morrissey took me a few listens to really appreciate his delivery but the humor and melancholy in his lyrics was always appreciated. I was surprised how much I liked his solo work but I have only recently been picking up on Marr’s latest releases and yes his vocals are right there. What a top group of musicians and with the solo stuff by Marr, so happy he continues the legacy.
I don't think this counts as a cover...
No, because johnny was the Co writer lol
I was thinking the same
😂🤣😂🤣
Whoa! That guy plays the guitar just like the dude in the Smiths!!!
That makes sense because everyone is everything.
@@meadish the acid hit huh
@@meadish deep as fuck
Good to see Johnny rockin’ the 12 string...sounds amazing
Lovely depth
Never noticed it until I read your comment 😄
I've never really wanted a Smiths reunion. But I just realized how cool it would be to hear Moz and Johnny harmonize their vocals.
That would be fucking weird
Morrissey would never let Marr sing
@@hoodoohullabaloo2848 I mean he let boz and alain sing so you never know
I don't know the Smiths much but that is never going to work out unless Morrissey has had another awakening, Pink Floyd's two sparring partners have more of a chance at reunion and that's "Fat"!?!
@@TomTomicMic It's okay. A.I. has it sorted. : )
Johnny Fuckin' Marr on 12 string guitar! 👌🏼
This is timeless stuff, which is why he's still playing it. Bloke is a legend
This song got me through 3 months of lockdown. Thankfully in Melbourne Australia we are extraordinarily lucky to be living as we are. Thinking of others still going through it. Peace.
Here in Brazil it´s a nightmare...
Being from Germany I had the chance to work and live in Melbourne for some 6 weeks in 1994. This city rocks! Good on ya!
Sounds better than morrisey now
i hope you all realized just how VERYyyyyyy fortunate that you are to have lived in a time when you had this freaking genius in his prime to get lost in!!!!! being 61 now, i have adores his talent for 35 years and am so thankful that i have the sensibilities that i do to have gotten the SMITHS and Moz//Johnny Marr right from the rip; they are and clearly still are incomparable!!
I don't think there's anyone cooler in rock than Johnny Marr!
Paul Weller is cooler...
You're right!
@@kerrybock766 No - You're right!
F*kc it - you're both right!!
Surely Ted nugent is far cooler...lol
His singing has improved a ton. It’s now got character and depth. And he’s such a nice guy. Imagine what the Smiths would have sounded like today if Moz would’ve not been such a pill.
I realized that I was very happy with my normal life. When I first heard The Smiths, when I went to see them live, it was a miracle, not the norm. Johnny's voice is more beautiful than ever and his 12 string guitar is brilliant. I'm glad to have another miracle in my life.
Best guitarist ever... Luv Marr's compositions and this one's my all time fav song!
It's not really a cover if he wrote the song right?!
Morrissey wrote the song. Marr did the tune. So sick of endless praise for Marr. The man hasn't come close to The Smiths in his endless attempts over the last fucking 40 years.
@@DoctorMeatDic lmao Johnny Marr is a pure genius
@@DoctorMeatDic I mean… neither has Morrissey tbh… I mean he has a good voice and all, but he was genetically lucked into singing like that. MOST of the time playing an instrument takes way more dedication. (Key word on most because I know a hand full of people still train their voice). I mean you literally know what song Marr is playing just by the tune.
I've always admired Johnny's guitar skills but ma alive he has a great voice! Love it
Please take the word COVER off from the title!
Autobiographies where a real eye opener, Morrissey read as full of bile, hatred and poison towards the others while Marr came across full of affection and forgiveness. Shame the old QUEEN still hold a grudge as this would be one monumental reunion..............
He now has a beautiful voice.
Such a beautifully tragic song - BRILLIANT! Thank you, #JohnnyFuckingMarr
2021 just got better, with lockdown hopefully coming to an end watching Johnny Marr performing there is a light, this makes me smile.
Love to see the sole composer of a masterpiece perform his classics
Amusing that Marr can always do Morrissey's part, but Morrissey can't do Marr's.
But does anyone know what capo that is?
I have a 12-string, and have the C7 capo, and it's not use.
If anyone knows what this is - or can recommend a capo for my poor old Eko Rio Bravo - then I'd be very grateful.
My favourite Smith's song!!!
genius at work !!! Thank you for all your music Johnny!
Sublime! And he sings it beautifully! I really could never understand why I never saw him singing harmonies with The Smiths!?
To the best of my knowledge Morrissey never wanted backing singers on his tracks so the music was written to accommodate that
He did at the very very early gigs
i have the same feeling on the other video when mike jones sang stay free in the library
my two guitar heroes sang their own songs. hope u guys are stay health
This is incredible. Love the counter melody coming in at the end. Wow.
Just what we need - someone else doing another Smiths cover......
he was from the smiths?
@@LittleShopofProps this guy is obviously joking lmao
Lol
He is good he should be in a band
Pmsl.....u snagged one in the comments
I could watch Jonny play all day. Great to be able to see the guitar all the way through.
when you're locked inside your home during the pandemic and feels like you're losing your hopes, please remember; there is a light that never goes out
This is one of the best songs ever
Much prefer Johnny singing and playing Smiths songs than Morrissey singing them without Johnny.
Much prefer Johnny singing and playing Smiths songs than Morrissey singing them without Johnny.
More evidence that it's time Morrisey hangs up his boots. Johnny has it covered and is a decent human to boot!
Wonderful Johnny
Wow, first time I ever see him play acoustically. That was wonderful!
I just want to hear him redo all of the smiths back catalogue as a solo act. Who's with me.
My lawd yessssss! For me, his voice is far and away better than Morissey and I don't get why Johnny doesn't get the hype
@@thenativenraven imagine thinking this vocal is as good as Morrisey
Gotta be hard for sure to play this song without adding or hearing the 2nd guitar track, which he found a way to include here brilliantly.
when thanos was conquered moz’s voice was given to johnny
Anyone ever wondered what the smiths would have been if Johnny just sang all the songs? I suspect just as big and still together.
The privilege was ours! 🙏🏼
I know there's no point to Morrissey now, but I'm starting to wonder if there ever was.
Prob not But the smiths would be nothing without the genius that is Johnny marr
Just love Johnny Marr, a great musician!
Yes one of the best 🤩
This is the best cover for the simple reason that Marr does understand what the song is all about and respects Morrisey's original feelings. As a guitarist, a killer.
There’s a D minor in there I’ve never realised. Cheers!
AMaj7
@@ChrisLisaLiam : just before the chorus there’s a Dm
@@ChrisLisaLiam where? I've been playing this tune without a Amaj7 for probably 20 years

Johnny muito obrigado por tudo o que você canta e toca 🇧🇷 ❤
Best Guitarists ever, Bar none
Beautiful but missing the voice of Morrissey ! Guitar is just a guitar everyone that know how to play a good guitar can play this song but no one can sing like Morrissey.
What a treat to see the man himself play an acoustic version of one of my all-time favorite Smiths songs!! Yay!
I could cry when I remember the first time I heard this song, for good times and bad.
I don’t know else who needed to see this right now, but I highly suspect I’m not the only one. Brilliant, as always.
if you can't find any grecian 2000 in Manchester you know who to blame
Thought it was a beanie hat tbh!
This is lovely and wow. A serious rock god making it look easy. I so love Mr. Marr.
your voice is really sounding great, Johnny. playing your repertoire daily.
Who needs Morrissey when we have you? 🙌⚡️⚡️⚡️
Throw back to when I sang this song for my 3rd grade talent show!
Johnny Marr fucking rules
Generally not a fan of guitarists singing songs of theirs that was originally sung by someone else, but for some reason it works with Johnny Marr. I guess having a good voice helps! Now I think about it, it was John Squire who was responsible for my original opinion on the subject.
Don't tell johnny, but I sang this with my best Morrissey sounding voice..
Still relevant n still got a cool Barnet. it will forever mystify me why it took my 2nd favorite guitarist of all time an age to bust da mic out n find his voice bravo thanx for posting
Johnny Marr…Awesome
My favorite version.
There is an alternate reality with Johnny Marr fronting the smiths as a singer as well. ( what the world needs is a Morissey-less Smiths, no matter what a great songwriter he was he was nothing without them )
It's hard to know what to say about this, other than absolute brilliance. What a tune master. The other guys in the band played a massive part of The Smiths sound but without this genious we wouldn't have been able wallow in our self pity for so long :-) Superb music.
Thanks for my birthday present, Johnny.
Love Johnny, an acoustic album from him would be amazing.
Inspite of the themes, Johnny Marr's version of There's a Light That Never Goes out sounds alot more sanguine than the melancholy of the original version sung by Neil Morrissey.
It's very sad that never will be The Smith's reunion. 😢
I love your vocal takes on these fundamentals, JM. These are your songs, I love to see you own them.
You cant buy CLASS and Boy does Johnny Marr have it in abundance... KEEP ON ROCKING IN THE FREE WORLD .. before we have to pay to sleep and Pay to wake up ... JM and The Smiths ... STUNNING and TIMELESS .
He looks georgeous! He seems not to age...and he plays and sings wonderful!
This is the perfect song while studying Dante Alighieri, it reminds me so much of his life and the inferno and his other books
Johnny? Is your 12 string strung like a "Rick" 12, heavy string on top?
Blimey these days he even does Morrissey better than Morrissey...
*Waits for stampede of furious Morrissey fans* 😂
😍 Exactly what I needed this morning...JFM rules.
JOHNNY FUCKING MARR!!!
One of the best ever. I had the chance to see him live, the best guitar player I like
Love this more than the earlier version. For real.
Still miss the only imaginable voice for this song, sorry. Viva hate and viva Morrissey.
Just johnny 🙌🏻👌🏻
Johnny is such a good sport for covering this song written by Doris from Gavin and Stacey. 😊
Cover? This man is Johnny Fucking Marr!
Hardly a ‘cover’ when he co-wrote it 🤷♂️
How does he look so young??? You’re a beautiful soul, Mr. Marr.
Um dos ícones da minha geração!
Thought he was going to break out into Cool For Cats 😄
Awesome though!
Jesus.. absolutely beautiful
What a great man and musician . Also plz don’t insult him by calling it a cover.
Excellent. My favorite Smiths song by far.
How can the co-writer and band member be doing a 'cover'?
different gravy. 12 string jonny laaaaaa
