  • After spending $500 (USD) on two clip filters back in Feb for my Pentax K1 (I did plenty of email with them prior to ensure they'd fit), and then finally getting some small foam adaptors in August, the result is that the STC products has jammed my WilliamOptics T-Ring onto my camera.
I cannot recommend these clip filters, and even would avoid out of concern that your camera might be damaged.

Thanks so much for posting. I WAS considering purchasing a filter for my full frame Nikon. I would be using a telephoto lens and not a telescope so I doubt the sponge adapter or WO adapter would be needed. But your video scares me! In the case of a full frame Nikon, STC customer Service (whom I contacted with questions before I watched your video and before I purchased) said I have to install the filter while the camera is turned on and in Live View Mode since there isn’t enough room for the mirror to be used. I would then have to mount the lens, keeping the camera ON during the whole astrophotography session. If the camera is somehow turned off, I wonder what happens to the mirror, sensor, filter, etc!? My camera is ha-modified so I’ve already put some money into it and voided the warranty. Yeah… hard pass on STC Optics clip-in filters. Thanks for posting!

I'd recommend not to buy STC.
I bought 1 ND filter from them and it came with a lot of dust.
I sent photos to them when I got it and they said:
"We apologize for the filter condition, it shouldn't be like it. We will improve our QC process immediately.
Very sorry for letting you receive the unclean filter, as apologized we like to make the filter become 20% discount and the adhesive for free."
Since they were not gonna replace I decided to properly clean the filter and still has 3 small dusk-like marks.
I don't recommend, a product that goes to your camera should come faultless from factory.

I just got the STC Optics Astro Nightscape clip filter for my Nikon D3400 (aps-c) today.
Unboxed, had a thought about why the hell i spent $180 on such a small piece of glass, put it into the cam and it fit perfectly. No problems whatsoever. Nothing gets stuck, the cam doesnt glitch around, its pretty sturdy for how it looks and feels and is definitely worth the money.
Can you see why exactly the T-ring is stuck? like, is there a notch of metal that blocks the threads somewhere?

Hey, what happened is that with the little extra foam spacer that is required with the Pentax and T-ring, you have to push down so hard to be able to rotate the T-ring onto the bayonet, that you don't hear the click of the stop, and end up rotate right by it. The design of the filter for the Pentax is faulty.

How are you liking the clip for your D3400? How effective have you found it for light pollution? Looking at for my D7200.

@@bgovan64 I cant say much about light pollution since im in a bortle 3-4 area now. And my D3400 is modded, i removed the stock filter. I really only bought this filter as a replacement for the stock filter to still let 95% of the H-alpha pass to the sensor while simultaneously blocking anything else that isnt useful.

Thanks. Just getting into. Ordered my Star Adventurer Pro. I’m just trying to decide what my best route will be for a light pollution filter. Going to use my D7200 with a couple lenses to start out.

@@bgovan64 have a look at the Facebook group called "Astrophotography for Beginners"
Join them, very nice and helpful people.
Make a post in the group, state what gear you have right now, that you bought the SAP and what kind of filter you should get for your D7200.
I cant help you with that since the D3400 is the only DSLR ive ever owned & used.

User error. The filters claim compatiability with the base camera, not with your after-market, 3rd part T ring adapter. STC has no obligation to focus on niche compatibility with every 3rd party accessory. The filters work great without it-coming from a Sony A1 user.
In this instance, you could blaim Williams for not being compatible with STC as much as you can blaim STC for not being compatible with Williams. The argument makes no sense. Why not send back your T-Ring as well and make an angry video against them also?
