It's also worth pointing out that the sensor itself actually has multiple layers of optical glass over it, too. In the worst case that you do scratch a sensor, what you are actually scratching is the highest layer of filter glass not the sensor itself. That glass can be replaced for a couple hundred dollars without damage to the sensor itself.
Bought the 3 & 6 stop for Fujifilm XH2/XH2S cameras. Primarily intended for use with the cine' lenses MKX 18-55 & 50-135. Learned very quickly that these filters must be fully seated in the camera, or else they flop around between the lens and the area in front of the sensor. It becomes very apparent when you look at your images and see dark corners in the frame. For me, the filter blocked the lower left or lower right corner of the frame. I found that if I gently rock or shake the camera and hear the filter clanking around inside, the filter is not properly seated and needs to be addressed before any shooting. I now know the filter is secure and will not affect the images if there is no clanking. I have watched this review many times and agree with Tom that all can be good with lots of practice.
Thanks for another very thoughtful and useful review, Thomas. One small thought on your first "con", about the need to unmount the lens to add, change or remove filters, which may involve exposing the sensor in dirty/hostile environments. You balanced this by saying the same risk would apply if you were just changing lenses. Yes. I guess we all shoot differently, but when shooting landscapes in those environments (very often the case), I do everything I can to avoid changing lenses. Yet I feel much more comfortable changing "traditional" filters in response to changing light or to experiment with different shutter speeds in long exposures etc, and often do so several times in the course of a shoot using a single lens. So I guess the risk/reward calculation will depend a lot on the type of photography you do and where you do it.
Absolutely agree, which is what I meant by the comment you need to know what you’re going to shoot.
In your landscape example with fading light etc these could definitely start to become more of a hindrance.
Compare to say outdoor wedding videography these could be fantastic
Seems these are the best way to avoid filter reflections when shooting into light sources. Perhaps the best option for mist / diffusion filters.
Brilliant contribution - this is what UA-cam is for. I gather that the glass covering the sensor, although a critical component, might not be as delicate as I have always feared. I don't have the expertise to judge, but there's a UA-cam on this topic called "How Scratch-Proof is a Sony Mirrorless Sensor?" Just to say that I welcomed that reassurance. Given your notes on the color of the other two, and since I need strong filtering anyway, I found that it is possible to purchase the ND1000 alone.

I do not want to use these for ND filter or anything. The only reason for me to get this would be to stop dust from getting onto the filter. It seems easier/saver to clean this filter regularly than it is to clean the sensor. This way I can keep the sensor protected at all times, even while changing lenses in harsh environments.

Nice filters, just not many graduations, it's either 3, 6, or 10 stops, and although probably the most useful ones, it'd be nice if they had more options. (didn't really check if they had more, just the link on the description, so people do your own homework 😅👍)

Thanks tb. I don't think this is the route for me. I'm trying to reduce kit currently to two lenses only (18-35 and the 50-140 which both have 72mm filter threads), and so I see magnetic filters on the front element being pretty chill affair.
But really... all this innovation and we can't get camera companies to put built in ND filters yet?! C'mon man... it's 2023 and the way these cameras are powerhouse video rigs its surely high up on the list of demands! First common brand that does built in ND filters first will get a huge amount of love!
Oh man I 100% agree, more brands need gyro data, external ssd recording, better hdmi output setting, better video monitoring tools, 32bit audio internal , so many things that have little to do with specs that could make a camera be better than a “cinema camera” but at a great price
@@ThomasBusbyPhotography Gyro data yes! Just came across Gyroflow the other day, you can imagine my disappointment when I realised my XH2S doesn't provide the data 😭🤣
Yeah I can only assume it has a gyro in it for the ibis, hopefully it comes soon to fuji though as it seems Sony is all over it, but yet fuji works it into resolve like the BM cameras can

It is hard to get past the first few seconds of this video what with the "OMG the risk the risk..." given the abuse I used to put my nikon F4 through,... some people are just meant to be studio photographers I guess. Lets see if the video improves in the remaining minutes
You mustn't have looked too hard,... Kolari vision makes similar clip in filters and blows away kase when it comes to selection
Look like your ND64 was faulty. I don't believe they would screw up that bad. A shame you didn't test the ND32. But thanks anyways

@@ThomasBusbyPhotographyI think the ND64 you got had a problem and not all ND64 are like that. I've seen other people using and they looked as good as the others.
@Cestariarts I hope that’s the case. Though I didn’t think my ND64 was too bad, just not perfect
