  • For clip in astrophotography filters as of the making of this video, STC is the only option. That is not a bad thing though because they are just about the best filter maker out there. In the video I cover my thoughts and experience with the filter. Some of the transition bands that this filter has and how it block light pollution. Olympus is the only camera you can buy a light pollution filter for and shoot with a wide angle lens. This means I you want to do wide angle shots of the milky way, Olympus is your only way to do it in light polluted areas.

    After watching your video about STC and Olympus OMD MKI, I ordered, and I have a very good experience, the filter is great and really narrowband, filters everything, even I took on full moon without issues nebula photos, now I have the Olympus OMD MKIII and the results with both cameras are amazing. Thanks.

    Curious as to your experience inserting and removing this filter (assuming you have this experience vs. maintaining your Olympus as a dedicated astro camera). Do you feel it is easy/safe to pop these in and out (once you get the hang of it)? Thanks!

      You have to be carful with them. Everything has to be lined up just right. I actually broke one once. I think in this video I mentioned that you should be able to push it in with a q tip. Fortunately they gave me a discount to replace it.
      Removing them is supper easy if your have fingernails.

    Yes, STC are the only clip-in for Olympus and Panasonic. I did try fitting upside down but even right way up I find them fiddly - insert bottom edge first, swivel a bit and push gently. If it won't push gently in, take it out and reposition. After six attempts I begin to lose the plot, and then it just slips in. Bah.

    Hmmm. Too bad they don't make these for all of the narrowband ranges

    Thanks, did you have a chance to evaluate-compare with the Cokin Nuances Clear Sky front filters (that I own) ?

      Have not. They are an older filter and work great at reducing the older sodium lights. However those lamps are pretty much extinct at this point.

    Hey Ben, thanks for the video. I will get the dual band version as I live in Bombay and looks like that’s the only option I have. I have a old em1mki and I have been thinking of having the RGB filter removed, and then used with this dual band filter. What are your thoughts?

    • @TheNarrowbandChannel
      @TheNarrowbandChannel  Рік тому

      I would strongly recommend upgrading to an em1mk2 if your want to modify it. Modified will greatly improve its performance with the dual band filter.

      @@TheNarrowbandChannel hey Ben, thanks for taking the time to rely. Is there any reason for the upgrade to mkii? More mp? I am an absolute beginner. So just unsure. I have a em5 mki and em1 mki just lying around unused so thought I could modify one and get some use out of them and if I like astro and pursue it further than I can modify my em1 mkiii at a later date.

    Did yours em1 been modified?
    Any test to compare lens front filter or lens back filter?

    • @TheNarrowbandChannel
      @TheNarrowbandChannel  4 роки тому +1

      My camera was not modified. I am probably going to pick up an Em1 Mk2 soon and that one I will probably have modified.
      The only pro to a front of lens filter is that dust specks will not show up as much. Other then that the in camera seams to be the most affordable and then can work with every lens you have.

    cool video! I got the same filter and I am shooting with am EM-5 Mkii. I have a problem with removing the green casting this filter produces. Could you share the workflow you use to get rid of it? thanks!

      In the day time you can use a white sheet of paper an create a custom white balance. It will normalize the color but in post processing you just have to balance it in the histogram. Look up my DSS video. It has my photoshop stacking technique in it in the second half.

      You cannot use Auto-WB you have to use fixed. Any will do but usually daylight (sunny). The "Astro-Nightscape" (a CLS) needs little to no correction (the E-M5ii sorts it out) but the others will like some work in post.
      Cameras try to adjust WB to 18% grey, night is not like that.

    Thanks for the tutorial, mate - I received my order and put it to test last night. Sure enough, images had a greenish tint to them right out of the camera. How exactly did you color correct that, may I ask?
    Worse, it had red and purple fringes after I stacked 20 of them. I doubt it's the sensor because this is a brand new camera, and did not exhibit any of these problems in other shots, so it must be the filter, and I'm not sure what's going on.

    • @TheNarrowbandChannel
      @TheNarrowbandChannel  4 роки тому +1

      You can fix it with a custom white balance. But if you are Stacking then you have to deal with it as you stretch the image. I do a star minimizing routine to take care of some of the halos. Though my halos were not too bad.

      STC warns that lenses wider than 14mm (APC) will suffer coma and chromatic issues around the edges. It is because of the position of the filter and angles within image circle. Using longer lenses will solve that issue.

      @@leonarddaneman810 I use a 135mm f/2.0 lens, and it turns out it's the lens vignette that is causing/worsening it. Maybe shooting a mosaic and clipping the edges is the only way around it.

      @@Sunil_Veeramuthu So, a non-Zuiko. Image circle shouldn't be a problem on a 4:3 sensor, but if you are vignetting something is wrong with the lens. Samyang? Rokinon?

      Hi Daniel. I do not have the Duo band yet but I do want to try one out. Maybe I should email them. Though I do not have any experience I would recommend getting your camera astro modified. Its well worth it and will pay off 10x when combined with that filter because that filter depends a lot on H channel.
