I’m really sad for your losses in the garden. My daughter used to live in a home with deer always surrounding it. And they ate her plants too. A neighbor told her to place a radio in her garden and turn it on talk radio during the night when the deer came to feed. The voices talking scared the deer away and it solved her problem. It worked!

Angela so blessed to have a life partner namely Joel who loves the things you enjoy. Massive respect for you both with all the work you do. My heart dropped when I saw the damage you had in your beautiful gardens. I’ve had that happen to me too. You keep moving forward though and find the joy in what you have.

When you said you were going to be sick... I really felt your pain. If I saw a snake... I would be done for the day!!!! I think deer are so beautiful... but I have never lived and garden in a place like yours. With the beauty comes the pain too. I can't imagine seeing all that devastation after all your hard work. What an amazing environment for your children to grow up in. Your daughter is so sweet and full of life! I love her personality. Hope the rain is on its way. Being from California , drought has become a way of life for us. But, then, I don't farm so the impact is nothing like what you are going through.

Those of us who garden could *feel* your pain at the beginning of this video. If you know, you just know. I teared up for you esp when you got to the roses and holly hocks. We get it, girl. Praying y'all get rain & a healthy baby moo moo.

Angela, a few tips for living with deer. I know you are very visual and don't want to see a lot of barriers in your garden, but there are some things you must do if you want any plants at all to thrive. First thing: new little trees MUST be surrounded by a circular wire barrier until they get old enough to be above deer damage. I buy a roll of 6 foot wide woven wire in the 2"x4" mesh. Make a big circle of the wire, leaving room for the tree to expand for at least 3 years. I drive an 8-foot metal T-post 2 feet into the ground on one (or both) sides of the wire circle to anchor it in place. Use zip ties to attach wire to posts. Those posts can easily be removed even years later using a manual post-puller (from your local farm store). Surround all new trees in this way. By the time the tree is tall enough to rise above the 6-foot circle, it will be able to tolerate deer browse and you can remove the wire. As far as your garden beds (sweet potatoes, etc), use that same woven wire to make half circle protective hoops over the beds to keep out deer and rabbits. Use smaller pieces to cover the ends of the beds. If you cut the wire so that the two sides against the ground have "spikes" of the wire protruding, you can stick it right down into the soil. The wire is not all that noticeable -- I actually kind of like the look of it. Kind of makes the garden look finished. Easy to remove for harvesting. As far as the hollyhocks and roses and so on, unless you put up an 8 to10 foot tall perimeter fence, you are going to get deer browse. But at least you can protect your food crops with the wire. I used that woven wire and metal T-posts to make a perimeter fence, then took 8-foot 2x2s and zip-tied them to the outside of the T-posts, then strung 2-foot-wide deer mesh (it's totally invisible and costs pennies) to make an inexpensive 8-foot-tall fence. Deer won't jump it. You can do a section at a time as you can afford it. A 100-foot roll of the woven wire is usually around $70 at Tractor Supply or whatever your local farm store is called. The metal T-posts are usually around $7 apiece. Set them at 8-foot intervals using a post-pounder, also available at the farm store. One thing you might try with your ornamental crops is to take some spiky branches (alder is good) that will be as tall as whatever you are trying to protect and stick them in among the plants. When the deer go to take a bite, the twiggy branches stick them in the face and they back off. I used that method with great success to protect food crops on my unfenced property in Nova Scotia. Another thing deer do not like is fishing line. Try surrounding some of the beds you don't mess with too often with a couple of rows of fishing line. It's invisible, and when the deer run into it it spooks them and they back off. Good luck.

Oh that intro broke me. We had a year like that 2 years ago, including a devastating downburst storm that wiped out nearly all our vegetable garden just weeks before deep harvest and flipped our heavy hog houses, nearly breaking them in half. I just feel this SO deeply. But that is the life of a homesteader- and why only the strongest and most dedicated souls can even hope to try it. Hang in there Angela; you shall overcome ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Let us all think DEEPLY about that! So thank you Angela, for sharing the bitterness of your sorrows with me -- with us, because they are REAL and they make the joys so indescribably sweet!♥️😭

Oh my dear girl! I feel your pain! We are in a terrible drought here in Western Canada (Calgary) with devastating forest fires everywhere. Every day we pray for rain but so far…… heat, wind, sun and smoky skies. We live on a quarter section of land mostly in hay but likely will not get much this year unless it rains soon. But enough of me!!! I’m so sorry about your beautiful garden! Battling intruders ( mostly deer) is frustrating! We ended up getting a border collie and she conscientiously now keep the deer away! The deer don’t even try any more…. They know they will get an argument from Jasper! I love your videos…… many I watch several times over ……🌷❤️🇨🇦

Your face looked like mine two mornings ago. We live just south of Oconomowoc, WI. and have a herd of 18 deer who live on our property and when I woke two mornings ago and looked out my front door I quickly realized the deer left devastation here too. Ate everything, tomatoes, nearly everything plant in pots, new bushes I put in etc! It is heart wrenching but there is just so much u can do to prevent it, we r on over 11 acres and couldn’t and wouldn’t be able to fence it all so I just tell myself” chin up, buttercup!” Your place is BEAUTIFUL! We will be up in August and can’t wait!!! Good luck Fern!

Another comment: those arborvitae are eventually going to get 30 or 40 feet tall -- in not too many years. Save yourself the trouble of in-ground planting them, and just put them in super big pots that eventually you can remove...unless they would get frost-killed in winter.

My goats got hit hard this year with a heavy worm load and it has been such a challenge. My vet and I came up with a game plan. But farmers pivot and sometimes we walk away and start again in the morning. I pray joy for you and blessings🌻❤️🌱

I cannot imagine how you must feel....I cried when the cutworms destroyed my peppers and tomato seedlings, but I can't phathom how you must have felt looking at all of that destruction. But you are so right, you have to look at the beauty that is still left and untouched and I saw so much beauty and life in your garden...like your wysteria and your pond is amazing...(BTW I found those cutworms and their life was 'cut' short) ♥♥

Might y'all be able to bring in a guard dog to help with deer? I know it would be taking on another task, but could be worth it!

Oh those deer! I have to spray every few days with a product called Bobbex which keeps them away. But for a large garden that’s not practical. Shore up that fence! I really feel your pain, though. Here in Vancouver we got our first rain yesterday after six weeks of drought. There are forest fires here and in Alberta. It’s crazy!

I’m soooo sorry about the invasion you’ve been experiencing! I’ve had the same problem with rabbits eating my tomatoes and peppers! I’ve just been devastated! I have planted more tomatoes in pots closer to my home, hoping they won’t get close. Hugs, and love from Texas!

If you have dogs perhaps you can keep them the cold months in a heated dwelling you make. Then during summer they could stay outdoors. Just a thought along with concern. Happier days ahead.

Because of drought last summer, and watering every day, June through October, I completely took the summer off the gardens this year, and I’m glad I did, because it is even drier this year. Even the tougher trees like cedar and juniper are turning yellow and brown. It is what it is. Grateful for no fires yet. Thankful for some surviving perennials and three little tomato plants this year, and have learned to embrace the rest.

Ugh! Suffering same drought here in Illinois and the rabbits have turned into deer and have devoured and killed all my roses (some 25 years old), among other plants. Hostas? What are those? Apparently the new 🥕 or rabbit delicacy. They never ate my plants before?! My lavender always dies, so now I just plant it annually and in pots to pretend I’m in France!! Oh, to be a gardener 🌸🪻🌸🪻🌸🪻🌸🪻

All the plants will recover....maybe not this year but they will and other stuff will fill in those spots. Wildlife is suffering terribly from this drough like all of us. It comes and goes in cycles and some years are more challenging. It still is a gorgeous garden. Keep faith. Pray for rain. Here in Canada we are praying as the wildfires rage on with distruction. Faith and hope.

I def recommend a dog. Granted, that brings other challenges, but an underground fence will help the dog stay where he's supposed to... our dog does a Wonderful job at keeping the deer at bay. We live right in the woods.

I’ve heard that if you plant shrubs or other plants densely on the inside of a fence, deer won’t jump it bc they can’t see a clear landing on the other side 🤷‍♀️ I’m so sorry they ate your beautiful garden.

Angela, try putting a radio in your garden on a motion sensor and see if it will help. We have deer too and I feel your pain and frustration. A farmer friend uses the radio method to keep them out of his corn and it seems to work. Bless your and the family. Chin up don't give up.

Just so you're aware, the deer do so much damage to Arborvitae especially in the winter. There is a type of spray that landscapers can put on them in the fall to protect them from deer over the winter season. I know too well what you're feeling!!!

Oh Angela, I am so sorry. 😢 It is just heartbreaking. Maybe you should think about a guardian dog. I don't have deer, but we have had four weeks of literally no sun and temps in the fifties, dropping to the 40's at night with basically no rain here in Rhode Island. Gardens are never a guarantee are they? On a happier note ( gotta keep looking for those) Fern is just gorgeous. They really are sweet. Best of luck with the calving! Thinking of you! ❤
