This is the first installment of our video series, "The Homesteaders Guide to Chickens".
Today, we just cover the basics for those thinking about getting started with chicken keeping, discussing things such as housing, choosing between laying hens or chicks, and how many chickens you need.
Later, we'll be going over topics such as breeds, incubating, treating illness, clipping flight feathers and even raising birds for meat.

Throwback to having 30 chicks before even having a home for them. You've come so far! I'm just building my first coop and run today.
Highly suggest keeping the bloopers in at the end. It leaves viewers with something to laugh about and the reality that making videos takes work! You are so inspiring. My husband and I are in the midst of a battle with our township to have Animals....please pray for us. We lost last year and this year is round two...so heartbreaking but it's something we dream about and were not ready to give up. Melanie & Adam.

nicely done, I just got 7 hens, 2 barred rock, 1 buff orpinton, 1 rhode red and three mystery ones :). I will be building the chicken coop and run, I live in LA and I always wanted to raise chicken. I looking forward for more of your videos.

Hi Jess. I will be getting my first new chicks in a little over a month so I am binge-watching whatever I can find on how to raise chickens. This came up as recommended and I smiled so big. I don't know how I missed this one in your playlist. Really great information. The only thing missing was "I bless you, until next time.".

I'm 100% glued to your channel now. I just got my first small flock (we live in a town that just recently changed the ordinance to allow up to 6 hens), and even after scouring the web I have questions. You have beautiful birds, and SO MANY! Will be watching your videos for sure. :)

I thought all this stuff was really expensive until I remembered the coops my dad built for me and he sells are about £500

Miss Jess I realize that this is an older video and everything but I was wondering do you still use the sand in your coops because I'm going to be buying land here soon and setting all that up and I was wondering is that still what you think is the best thing to put inside the coops and if it is would you mind just answering because God bless you girl you've been through so much in the last few years I figure I'm going to try to take everything I can from what you say and even if you don't think you're smart we all know you are God bless you from my family to yours thank you

Great advice from the "Crazy Chicken Lady" Love it. I hope to get some more birds next spring. I had 14 of them and an owl got into the coop and killed them.

I don't quite understand hens with roosters. I understand that they can protect and fertilize the hens. How do we keep the rooster from fertilizing all my hens? Especially when I'm not ready for that.
Also where is part 2?
if you are going to be doing a lot of homestead videos would you consider getting honey bees and showing how to take care of them.(p.s you could als try rabbits)

I’m going to start from your oldest videos to the newer ones.
I have a small yard and been telling my 5year old ‘when we get bigger land we’ll get our farm animals’ but mostly only about 5 years (hopefully no more) I’ll be able to get bigger land. I don’t want to wait that long!! So I’ll start with 2-4 chickens:) I already have my raised bed, next year I’ll be making more, and I started my compost.
