Andrew Doyle's definition as set out in this piece does a very good job here in pinning down the essential characteristics of the term. Some people may see all this "woke" nonsense and regard it harmless and laughable, this would be a big mistake though. It is insipid and corrosive to the very fabric of society and enlightenment thinking. Do not underestimate the threat this secular religion and its dogma's pose. It is Orwellian and divisive. The greatest threat to liberal democracies for 80 years.

Interesting. As the 20th century evolved into the 21st, linguistic connotations seem to have evolved from appalling English grammar and illiteracy.
I don't concern myself with what other people think 'woke' means. I am ONLY interested in my own definition.
The word now is entirely related to matters that, to me (as I have clearly stated, I am only interested in my definition) are superfluous to a pleasant, intelligent life.
Being interested in only one's own definition of a word seems unwise.
Words and language are, after all, the tools one must use to communicate with other people. They rely entirely upon agreed and shared meaning, otherwise one would have no idea what any other person means when they say words.
This entire video is an attempt by Mr Doyle to put forward his own definition (which is a far more accurate and succinct mirror of my own), backed up by research and expertise, that is aimed at educating people to what the word "woke" means and its connotations.
A thing must be defined before it can be examined and criticised.
This lack of definition and notice is what has been this ideology's shadowy armour for decades, do not encourage a further lack of specificity.
One can see the Left trying to scurry back to the shadows with the current CRT issue - they're denying that what they're doing is CRT (or based on it) but, they also won't state what it is that they are doing (or its philosophical/intellectual source). Desperately trying to go back to the ephemeral shadows where they aren't noticed and cannot be criticised.
This Andrew Doyle guy presents detailed and well-researched content, giving you the facts for you to form your option, it's impressive. Of course we all have bias but it's nice to see someone trying to be objective.
He makes some interesting points which will jar with many GBnews fans who suffer with cognitive dissonance.

This is the man who co-created the 'Jonathan Pie' character, so he's certainly an intellectual and I've watched many interviews with him outside of GBnews where his opinions are very balanced and his rhetoric is toned down.
It's a shame that Wooton has an anti-intellectual agenda.
Maybe they could do a 'Gammon Watch' section to balance things out further now he's suggested that we're all 'woke'.

I've been saying this for a while.
I'm a socialist and I'm not woke. I believe everyone should be equal regardless and I treat everyone like this. I rebel against true economic inequality. However the one thing I hold as sacred is free speech. It is absolutely essential in a democracy. Yes I mean even hard liners on right and left. You defeat the ideas they have by reason not by censorship.
And so, I reject the woke cancel culture and censorship. Woke is extremist liberalism. Not left wing.
A liberal centre ground dream and drowning out all other voices.
It is itself oppression and wrong.
Once again..you do not defeat an ideology by censorship, but by powerful reason and debate.

You're sort of doing the same thing by labelling them as far left though. I'd argue that the problem is that the left-right axis is too simplistic for this situation. They are ideological opposed to one of the most fundamental parts of traditional left wing thought (issues surrounding class inequality). Their views may bear a lot of similarities with some of Marx' ideas, but they've mixed it with traditionally conservative* things like identitarianism and created some kind of perverse abomination. The idea that identity trumps class issues should be antithetical to any Marxist, if you think about it.

The rest of your analysis is flat out false. Identitarianism comes directly from Marxism, it is not, and never has been a 'conservative' value. It is actually antithetical to western conservatism because it is deeply anti-enlightenment which is the basis of western conservatism. Education and the media for decades has been smuggling Marxist values into the discourse and muddying the waters for decades so I don't blame you for your confusion, but you deeply wrong here. Every spat of Marxist progoms and death camps during the 20th century had identitarianism at it base, identitiarianism is an exclusively left wing value.
Andrew's point about 'woke' ideologues not being of the left is very well put-I've been saying that for years. I'm a traditional lefty and most definitely *not* into the mash-up of ideologies that constitutes critical social justice.
I've also been saying for years that CRT is not Leftist. Douglas Murray in "The Madness of Crowds" has a chapter on Cultural Marxism, but I was not convinced: he just quotes some nutty American academics who spouted incomprehensible "Marxist" theory decades ago, and now spout incomprehensible "Critical Race Theory".

Odd that people alive today are now being regularly criticised for who they are, their education and upbringing when they actually had no control over it as they were unable to control their birth, where they grew up and went to school and so on.
Some of us were born into religious cults and had to remain in them until adults when we could escape so know all about this. You cannot blame me for what I was as a child and teenager, I had no choice in the matter.

I agree 100% with these sentiments. Growing up two central figures in my life were my Granddad who worked for the Patent Shaft until the day it closed and was a lifelong union and Labour man and my Great Uncle on my Gran's side who was a self made man and also firmly on the left. They both believed in nationalised industries, hated Thatcher, but were selfless, hardworking, family orientated people who loved a drink, loved football and having a laugh and had a live and let live attitude when it came to issues of race, sexuality, etc. I've tried to emulate and take after them in my own attitude to life and politics.
They were the authentic, working class, Labour voting centre left. I can tell you for certain they would have felt zero bond or affinity with these mouthy, outspoken, divisive activists. Nor do I.
The point I'm making is that these people are just a noisy lunatic fringe, given a disproportionate public voice through the phenomenon of social media. They don't speak for or represent everyone whose ideas fall to the left of centre.
I consider myself to be on the right of centre and I been saying this whole time that the woke lot are right of me

Totally agree that the woke are not left wing nor are they liberal. You cannot be left wing and liberal at the same time by the very definition. We need to actually see the woke for who they are - the true anti-liberal extremists hiding in plain sight. As politics is a circle not a left-to-right spectrum, ultra-liberalism may be described as North or zero degrees with leftism heading say east toward 90 dgerees while rightism heads west towards 270 degrees. As both become more extreme in view and implementation they both head down toward south / 180 degrees where the individual human has no place, no rights and no distinctions other than that which the 'state' bestows.

How is 'woke' a synonym for anti-liberal? Rawl's 'veil of ignorance' is a pre-condition that seeks to eliminate 'subjective' differences. Self-understanding is premised entirely on prescribed transcendent values. Who decides what these prescribed objective values should consist of? Are 'objective' values real or ideal? If they are ideal how can they relate to something that is real? 'Wokeness' is liberalism trying to make sense of itself, and it fails.

The phenomenon "woke" has clear borders in time and space. For example, it is confined to the Anglosphere, does not exist in Germany for example (even where things like political correctness do exist), and had not washed over us even by 2010, but its foundational materials existed in Academia - and were confined there till about 2014, until the sudden decanting of 300, 000 social studies students in 2013-1016 into politics and media.
Current wokery was whipped up inentionally in around 2010-2011 when anger was growing about the bank bailout being paid for by cutting disabled people's benefits. The very popular campaigns against international tax dodgers like google and Amazon (which had widespread mainstream support) have been diverted away from the megacorps, banksters and landowners giving a girthy length to everyone else... with no lube. Mainstream mass support is falling away from organisations discussing economic inequality, which people now associate with extreme PC because lefties have been trained they must mention a list of other perceived issues before they ever try to discuss the real nuts and bolts issue.
Woke is just politically correct rebadged.
It worked a treat and increased their control over institutions in the 70s, why wouldn't they do it again?
