At which point, of course, the black parents magnanimously conceded the point, admitted they'd been silly, and toddled off home. Or not.

The irony is I work in a couple of well regarded schools. The Asian pupils come to study at great cost to their parents - £30k+ per year. They often have a very poor command of English when they arrive but work really hard and most achieve places at top U.K universities. If you mentioned to these students that university courses should be dumb downed they would most likely leave in disgust.

They have been dumbing down the nation since the end of WW2. A major part of the story was when they introduced council housing. I watched a documentary from back in those days, and the people moving into the council estates were incredibly well spoken and educated. I took math up to Calculus, yet once I left school all I needed was addition, subtraction and division on a simple level to get by. Students should be able to opt out of math so that the students who want to learn it can have an enthusiastic class without the disruptive influence of uninterested students.

'Mathematics wasn't invented, it was discovered' is the well known trope... Europe moved from the roman numeral system toward the indo-arabic, because it was more user friendly. As European, I do not claim any sort of numerical oppression. If people focused more in maths in school rather than bullying or social grouping mockery of those who are really good at it (I am not, but at least I tried my best) , then when they get older they wouldn't be so intimidated by those who learnt or were gifted with it and do well. They have been dumbing down the nation since the end of WW2. A major part of the story was when they introduced council housing. I watched a documentary from back in those days, and the people moving into the council estates were incredibly well spoken and educated. Fast forward many years, and generations having been raised in the estate environment have been heavily affected. (I'm poor so am not making fun of people in estates but its an observation)

I took math up to Calculus, yet once I left school all I needed was addition, subtraction and division on a simple level to get by. Students should be able to opt out of math so that the students who want to learn it can have an enthusiastic class without the disruptive influence of uninterested students.
Geometry teaches logic.
A child who complains “I’m never going to use this” should just be taught how to use a broom or how to put something on a shelf. And then after lunch they can go home
Higher level math teaches you to think past 2+2=4 or my paycheck is smaller than last week.

'Mathematics wasn't invented, it was discovered' is the well known trope... Europe moved from the roman numeral system toward the indo-arabic, because it was more user friendly. As European, I do not claim any sort of numerical oppression. If people focused more in maths in school rather than bullying or social grouping mockery of those who are really good at it (I am not, but at least I tried my best) , then when they get older they wouldn't be so intimidated by those who learnt or were gifted with it and do well. They'd also be able to figure when someone who they think is doing well is a bullshit artist. We shouldn't be so tribal about cognitive reasoning
I garuntee you want the person in charge of medication dosages to be able to get the exact answer when it comes to pharmacology.
