the brainwashing scene never fails to give me the chills. it’s so full of hidden horror and despair. gets me every time.
The thing that always freaked me out the most was when "Joo Dee" appears at the end.
This show is so goddamn amazing!
All the hopes and excitement about finally getting into this "Great City" are so violently crashed and we are all left with this sense of dread and helplessness...
It's phenomenal writing.
My favorite part about that whole scene is the way it was happening parallel to what Long Feng was saying, really emphasizing why what he was saying was shady af and really made me have chills even more. It's made worse when Joo Dee isn't the same Joo Dee as before, the creep factor really went up for me when I first watched this, and it still does today.
"This show is a masterpiece" is an understatement, and the greatest understatement of the century probably 😝
Straight up North Korea or China vibes
Such a dark episode, more than you'd expect omg. I really feel bad for jet, even though i was really annoyed when he wouldn't leave iroh and zuko alone and mind his own business i still feel really bad for him he's been through a lot, and now he's being brainwashed damn. The next episodes are so great i'm soo excited for them!
It's true. He's still a kid, too, and his prejudices and extremist beliefs come as a result of the trauma and horror he was put through at a young age, like with many others.
Seeing what happens to him now, and later... it's actually really tragic.
The sad thing about Jet is he'd be the protagonist in a less optimistic series; he makes the kind of bad choices you see leaders make in shows like The 100 or Walking Dead. But the Avatar world isn't that kind of hopeless setting
@@JBWinter
Who does he resemble from The 100?
@@kashutosh9132 Pick any authority figure on The 100, they've almost all had moments of some VERY morally questionable decisions. But Avatar isn't a shades - of - gray world for the most part. People who make those kinds of hard choices aren't the protagonists
The ending of this episode is one of my favorites. its so creepy but by far the best plot line in my opinion. And this is the episode where it really kicks off.
To be fair, we've been (correctly) saying that since "The Storm" ;-)
“How could someone of my own family say something so horrible”
Ozai and Azula: 👁👄👁
Not even Ozai and Azula have ever said something horrible about tee.
Azula likes the tea ☕. He's drinking it while sitting on a throne
The Dai Li is a reference to Lieutenant General Dai Li, a spymaster who served as the Chief of the Kuomintang Army Secret Service under Chiang Kai-shek
Whaattt? 🤣🤣🤣 what movie is that🤣
which is interesting, since there's a place in ba sing se called "lake laogai", which is named after the system of prison camps used by the chinese communists. the communists and the kuomintang were on opposite sides of the chinese civil war.
@@troyo3172 some weird movie called IRL

@@sirmoonslosthismind yea and the Yasmine Dragon is a famus tea shot that one was in the epicenter of Tokio
Whoa I'm a history nerd and this blew my mind. Thank you!
WORTH NOTING: when iroh heated his tea with firebending at the train station, Zuko told him what a stupid move it was.
and now, when he's missing his spark rocks in his own home, he heeds Zuko's previous advice and borrows the neighbors instead. not often does the student become the master, but i really appreciate that detail.
There's a theory that Iroh recognized Jet would be a bad influence (or at least would put them at greater risk of their identities being outed), and thus purposefully firebent his tea in view of Jet to ward him off from Zuko
@@Luey_Luey
i hate it when people try to make like iroh knows everything and everything's part of his master plan. iroh's much more interesting as someone with genuine flaws who makes genuine mistakes, but is still that cool.
@@Luey_Luey but if he was worried Jet would out them as firebenders, why give him the proof?
@@McDougal_ to be fair we see what happens when jet goes public with his proof
"HE HEATED HIS OWN TEA!"
"he works in a tea shop"
plus iroh might have been less concerned about being outed (for that reason, or just in general), and more about making sure Zuko didn't stray down a new dark path
@@sirmoonslosthismind yeah I do think iroh hype is a bit overblown. so it's just a theory, it's not necessarily true but it does seem in character for him
Fun fact: Bosco and Long Feng have the same voice actor: Clancy Brown
who also voices Mr Krabs
Also mostly known as the best voice of Lex Luthor ever.
thank you supreme leader
Um ok no one cares.
@@unicornunicorn3249 I did. Therefore, you were wrong.
@@unicornunicorn3249 youre being sent to the kaesong salt mines
This episode actually does have references to 1984. That was a really nice catch and I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else notice it :)
It's amazing!
What happened??
@@aanyamallick7747 there's no war in 1984 🙂
@@yousuck1858 There is always war in 1984, the one war, that has been going on since forever
The reveal of the second Joo Dee ALWAYS gives me goosebumps! Ugh, it's so goooood!
Yeah, I loved the fact that Ba Sing Se was basically hyped for some time now as the big help that the Gaang needed in order to stand against the Fire Nation...and then we finally get here and this is what we get lol. Things are just completely messed up. Joo Dee was messed up! This episode just unsettled me with how dark and ominous it was. Hard to believe this was a Nickelodeon show at times.
As for Jet, I find it a bit ironically sad that he was right about Iroh and Zuko being Fire Nation but because of the way he was acting, he just came off as crazy. We as the audience know that Iroh and Zuko aren't bad people or going to do anything to the city despite being Fire Nation, but Jet doesn't know that. So from an objective perspective, he was doing the right thing. Afterall, Ba Sing Se IS the last Earth Kingdom stronghold left. Two firebenders hiding in plain sight is cause for suspicion. For all Jet knows, they could be infiltrators. It's just too bad he came off as crazy and the Dai Li are trying hard to suppress anything war and Fire Nation related.
"There is no war within the walls. Here we are safe. Here we are free" Another ironic thing! Talking about freedom while using a brainwashing method....
One more episode, cant wait for tales of ba sing se

I love how you compared this episode to 1984
The final scene with Jet reminded me more of Clockwork Orange.
@@christopherbacon1077 i have recently seen that movie and that is a reference I did not need. Good one tho.
Next up "Tales Of Ba Sing Se", ladies, you'll be needing a fresh box of tissues. 😢😭
This episode is darker when you see it as an adult cause u already know how the world works.
I am waiting the two next episodes..
I know! All that shady corruption, sistematic class segregation and authoritarianism in this supposed "great thriving city" feels all the more real as an adult, and happens in so many ways and in so many places... It's chilling.
And I love that this show wrote this so well!
@@wandanemer2630 that's what I love about this; it really makes it super realistic, to the point that Ba Sing Se can in fact be a real city somewhere in our world and it wouldn't even be out of place at all.
I mean I’m 12 and I completely understand the shit that’s going down in ba sing se
@@shastacoffey9423 Yeah you completely understand it im sure, but after some adult life itll hit even deeper for you
the dai li’s gloves are made of rocks and they earth bend the gloves to arrest people
That's badass.
Seems like pretty bad handcuffs for a city in the earth kingdom tbh. They probably have a lot more earth benders than say... Any other territory? Lol
It really flew over my head when I first watched this as a kid, but rewatching this as an adult (having also read "1984"), you really see how unsettling this episode is.
Well, better get the tissues ready for the next one...
Oh my god we're never ready...
I was treated like an “adult” when I was a kid, if I had questions I’d ask them and they’d be answered, so I pretty much understood how fucked up ba sing se was even as an 9 year old
The situation in Ba Sing Sei is very like the Forbidden City in Qing Dynasty China. The Emperor was an isolated puppet with the Mandarin bureaucracy actually running everything
Also, next episode, I'll just say stock up on tissues. You'll need them
This show isbso well researched and written! I LOVE IT!
I know you guys are fans of the show, but this is where you showed you were FANS of the show!
In the opening of the show, when they show the map of the world, look in the top right corner of the Earth Kingdom. That big circle? Thats Ba Sing Se, its inner and outer walls. Its the only part of the Earth Kingdom, aside from Kyoshi island, that Chin the Conquerer was not able to conquer in Kyoshi's time 300+ years ago
Looking at it on a map really shows its scale even better than the sky shots of the city. The thing is almost the size of the entire southern water tribes territory. Not just the tribe obviously, but their entire territory.
That episode was darker than I thought it would be when I first saw it a long time ago.
When we're older we realize just how *real* the horrors of Ba Sing Se actually are.
Holy shit, these girls are so fucking cute. I love how into the show you guys have gotten
The characters are definitely the strongest aspect of this beloved show.
And I wanted to say how much I appreciate your love for Sokka from the beginning! He is the best... after Zuko and Iroh...
Yeah this show was way beyond its time. Its pretty dark that the supposed ‘safe haven’ is able to get away with conformity.
It's still beyond its time today XD
If there was one mistake that Avatar Kyoshi messed up *BIG TIME* during her life: was the creation/founding of the Dai Li.
Avatar Kyoshi founded the Dai Li, it’s one of her greatest regrets
i mean, there's realistically nothing she could have done to keep them the same way forever. an organization evolves with the cumulative actions of its people. you can't prevent the effects of two hundred years of history.
3:56 they have every citizen inside the big wall fortress that Iroh & Azula couldn't break thru. Past the big wall fortress they meant they have the citizens divided within smaller class status wall. Poor, less poor, middle class, rich and filthy rich class like in real life
you should really watch Attack on Titan if this city is so surprising to you hahahahaha
Attack on Titan [subbed]
This episode was fundamentally disturbing when I watched it again several years later cause you have someone by the name of "Joo Dee" constantly doing the Cheshire Cat smile all the time, even in the scenes when Aang and the gang were asking everyone in Ba Sing Se on Appa's whereabouts she just nods "no" in a very creepy manner, but it gets darker during the end of the episode and in the next episodes set to come.
Speaking of which, even Dai Li and Feng, were also no better in this episode.
Oh hell, tales of ba sing se is next 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Can someone explain why long fang doesn't want to hear the plan himself? Like they have military fighting the fire nation.
I thought about this too and i think I can explain why, spoilers below for those not at that point yet
later, we see Long Feng is willing to cooperate with azula in order to maintain his control of the city. The show doesn't explicitly state so but I inferred that long feng is happy to allow the war to continue for the same reason. Think about it: Ba Sing Se has a massive wall around not only the city, but also the farmlands that feed the city, so it is self-sustaining - if the rest of the world is in chaos, then he can continue to justify his chokehold on the city to the generals of the military who do know about the war and have to confer with the leader of Ba Sing Se (which should be the Earth King, but is actually Long Feng).
I do still think it's a bit odd that he doesn't at least want to hear the plan - if it's a strategy that will merely weaken the Fire Nation, then he could decide to throw his support behind it in order to, again, perpetuate the war; and he should feel rightly threatened by Sozin's Comet. But on the same note, Aang probably wasn't very willing to cooperate as much with Long Feng after realizing he was a bad cookie too (because he's a pretty morally righteous dude, on top of being the Avatar); and Long Feng probably understands this and suspects that he's made himself next on the Avatar's hit-list after the Fire Lord
Plus it would be a bit out-of-character for Aang to decide to collaborate with someone who's outed himself as being a pretty bad dude, and it would be off-tone for the show as a whole
@@Luey_Luey That makes sense. I wish the show had explained that more clearly. There is another plot hole with the earth king that bothers me but they are not at that point in the series yet so I won't discuss it.
This episode is among my favorite.
I had confidence that the show could go into deep themes but this one really took me by surprise,
And the beauty of it is that it makes complete sense.
I love how Bah Sing Se is almost like a character, and how the city is a perfect product of Earth culture mentality :
Obsessing with control, shutting itself from the outside world, it's exactly how Toph parent treated her, and how she acts with
her earth tent when she doesn't want to hear from Katara.
I have to say i started watching your videos when ya'll were in season 1 now knowing u guys are going to watch the most epic character deveplopment i remember watching this show during quarintine was just undescriptible.
Finally someone mentions 1984 on this episode it was the first thing i thought of when rewatching this good job
Honestly, despite how fecked up this city is, I find Ba Sing Se really pretty, and still do. Like if it was a video game open city map, I would spend hours just strolling the place, from the outer downtown ring with poor people, to the plaza area, to the schools and universities in the middle ring, even the rich people area.
Finally, reactions that were similar to mine :D
In other reaction videos people remain calm, and just seem confused, and a bit frightened. I was downright disturbed watching the end of this episode.
You two are amazing!
everything from here on out of this season, gets kinda depressing lol. good luck
The lord of the rings reference tho.... 6:27
Your imitation of Joo Dee was hilarious😂
joo dee is like the students who volunteer to give university campus tours during orientation.
spot on with the 1984 comparisons lmao
the end of this episode gives me so much chills every damn time. ba sing se is a scary place!
SPOILER ALERT: Ba Sing Se build the wall to protect themselves from the Titans, but everything change when the colossal attack..
And to think that I was planning my summer vacation at ba sing se..
No need to worry, Lake Laogai is an alternative travel destination that’s reasonably close to the impenetrable city, I also hear it’s a very relaxing stay for all those who enter.
U girls have to watch Netflix cobra kai

11:49 that part makes me wonder about many things in real life
3:47 - It's the guy who tried to rob Iroh
I don’t think he is the same guy.
It's a long long way to Ba Sing Se
But the girls in the city are all so PRETTYYYYY
Joo Dee: hello
One of the best parts of the series IMO
I only just realized on this watch, when Lei Feng tells them he's in charge of the military, instead of getting mad about how he's subverting the king, they should have been like, "Oh good, we've got a plan to take out the fire nation."
You knowing 1984, just level up your awesomeness!
I think this is a turning point where you might think “uh maybe this isn’t such a kids show”
all kids shows should respect the intelligence of their viewers the way this one does.
@@sirmoonslosthismind absolutely. I have so much respect for this show. And imo, the storm is when this show goes from for kids to for everyone. Showing literal domestic abuse with fire.

i love how jet spends like days in ba sing se before being arrested and he never learns about the city's policy of ignoring the war which makes his screaming "they are firebenders" pointless, where was he even sleeping and getting money for food in that time anyway?
This chapter reminds me North Korea, I imagine this would be the experience of visiting that country...
3:03 WOW! Ba Sing Se Makes New York City Look Like A Small Town! 🗽😱
Man poor jet, he literlly doesnt do anything wrong after his re introduction
Wich means he really changed his views
Trying to expose fire nation men infiltrating is not bad
Not to mention the bad he did before was because he was just a little kid forced to live in the forest without anyone to teach him anything
Now he does everything he can to protect people and never again did he try to hurt anyone inocent
And the reward for his change is death 😔
Do we ever see the original joo dee after this? I'm pretty sure she just disappears and it isn't even addressed. Spooky if true
