I definitely remember taking in a lot of the complex themes of this show as a kid. Not all of it but most of them. People don't give kids enough credit. Around this point in the show is when I realized it was something special and the season finale solidified that. PREPARE.

I was 10 when the show came out, back then I just watched it whenever I saw it was in, and I couldn’t really explain why I loved it. It came out on Netflix 5 years later so I decided to watch through it for nostalgias sake. Little did I know I would be rediscovering a true masterpiece. I’ve gone through the show at least half a dozen times since.

One of the best lines in the show "There is no war within the walls. Here we are safe. Here we are free." In just one line they perfectly demonstrate the ultimate control, to make someone believe they are not controlled. Also that moment when Joo Dee 2 shows up is one of the creepiest moments of the show!

But what if Long Feng and the rest of Dai Li manipulate them to be brainwashed everyone without telling nobody in the Ba Sing Se about the fire nation? Just like what they did to Jet! That was so terrible for a coincidence of what they did to them! 13:29

I know this comment is five years old, but it’s funny to me how quickly americans are able to pick up on media and governmental control over the masses in anything except themselves. Not saying you’re american or criticizing you directly, but for years I’ve noticed how the very same people who are able to see Ba Sing Se for what it is, are the same americans who think the US have military bases around the world to “protect” people and war movies have no influence ovee their perception that war is “cool and awesome”.

Yeah, as a kid I knew there was a lot of shady stuff going on in Ba Sing Se, especially in terms of Joo Dee and Jet. It made me beg the question of what happened to their tour guide and why they were silencing Jet. This show helps kids ask these types of important questions, and in turn make them much smarter in that "if this has deep stuff going on, I wonder what else has it..."

Every time I hear 'It's not a kids show, kids couldn't of understood what they were watching' I sigh a little bit lol. Like, I watched this show live as it came on tv. The themes weren't hard to follow. Every other kid I knew who watched it when it was initially airing understood what was going on. It's why we all liked it so much. Because it had dense story lines that you had to pay attention to and it wasn't acting like all of us were stupid. Not that we didn't like the shows that did have simple stories that were easy to follow and often didn't link episode to episode. But, there's a reason atla has such a dedicated fanbase from that era.

    • @teesaw8197

Yeah I watch most of the show as it aired and understood most of what was going on. But for me personally I kept watching for the awesome bending, action, adventure, characters and comedy. • @MsAkbar14
      @MsAkbar14 4 роки тому +8

i didn't understand it as a kid nor my friends. It depends on which part of the world you grew up. Maybe you live in a country where information is spread out freely so you knew this kind of thing early. My friend and I was born and grew up in Indonesia, we've been thaught a lot about false history of our country to fit the goverment propaganda, we've always made to believe that we are the victim of WW2 but erase the montrosity that we did in the past in our history book. The propaganda are so deep into our people's head that if you mention about anything bad about our country post-WW2 or during the cold-war, you will be thrown in the jail because of "spreading lies". It took me more or less 20 years of my lifetime to realize that my country is a US puppet, that's why anti-communism propaganda is so strong here up until now.

I always appreciated that the show pulled inspiration from Asian folklore and literature, but also history as well. The whole Ba Sing Se situation, is pulled directly from the late/fall of Qing dynasty China, to the design of the city, to the Dai Li, the whole ignorance of the situation of the country, the last emperor of China being practically a puppet in everyones hands, to the point where you see in a couple of episodes his character design is modelled on him as well. I was always fascinated with it this part cause I just never really knew that the creators of the show were interested in that part of history.

The Earth King’s name Kuei is even similar to the Emperor’s name Puei and the advisor was named Dai Lee.

This happened on Blind Wave a lot too, still happening with Korra. Talking isn't the problem, it's talking over characters when they say important things. You guys keep saying it's not a kids show but I have to say I watched this show when I was in like the 6th and 7th grade and fucking soaked up every part of it. I love this show so much and although I get more from it when I rewatch it now (especially in relation to the current political climate), I did catch all of these themes when I was a kid.

Ba sing se It is inspired by communist from china. North Korea only follows the Chinese model coold war.
Today's Chinese have left most of these practices.
The airbender massacre is inspired by the Chinese-Tibetan war in 1951 in which many Tibetan civilians died mostly Buddhist monks.
Fire nation is inspired by Japan that before and during the second world war, its imperialist politics of expansion invaded the countries of Asia.
Just as the Chinese and Japanese hate each other more than they do to the United States, since they have historically been in war for more than two thousand years.
That is why Japanese do not hate the US that exploded 2 atomic bombs in Japan.
And the other Asian countries hate China and Japan because they always want to invade.

In the second season, the main characters traverse the Earth Kingdom in
search of allies for their fight against the Fire Nation. What they encounter along their journey are a broken and defeated people. Contrary to their element’s nature of persistence and endurance, most Earthbenders have given up mounting any form of resistance against the constant injustice that surrounds them:
But despair gives way to something more sinister within the capital city of Ba Sing Se. The last stronghold of the Earth Kingdom has shut itself off to the plight of people beyond its walls, transforming into a totalitarian state that pursues subversive agendas of segregation and brainwashing in order to suppress diversity of opinion, consolidate power, and maintain order. After a century of conflict, the core of the Earth Kingdom has become corrupted, leaving its people devoid of hope.

No offence but you guys seriously underestimate the intelligence of children. Kids aren't stupid, and they can understand more things than adults give them credit for. Yes, adult jokes can go right over a kid's head but things like manipulation kids can understand. Kids can also understand a threat when they hear it. Kids are smarter than we think. :)

Kids can definitely understand that this is a commentary on society and government! I did when I was a kid. And this isn't the only "kids" show or media that tackles deep and complex issues. The Harry Potter books, for example, are also chock full of commentary on racism, bigotry and prejudice and LOADS of criticism of the government.
